So if you don't have a bov then this is what happens? The air in the intake has no other choice but to go back where it came from right? So is this a bad thing?
yes thats what happens and yes its bad. if you want it to sound like that recirculate your blow off valve into the intake piping so it goes back into the turbo the RIGHT WAY
Yeah kc that's exactly right. It is a bad thing because when the air is forced back through the turbo the compressor fan is forced to slow down dramatically, so when you put your foot on the gas again it takes longer for the turbo to spool again (turbo lag) It also puts unnecessary stress on the turbo.
hi im new at this, so i kinda have a question.. so say for example, your bov is set for higher pressure because u are able to boost at say, 1.5 bar, so to prevent premature opening of the BOV, its set to open at harder preassure but say when you are boosting at like 0.3 bar, doesnt the compressor surge occur as well?
yea my old car (s14a) sounded identical to that had a turbo smart type 2 BOV on it but i always had it wound up pretty tight low boost id get turbo dose or chatter what ever you want to call it but the second i brought it on big boost ( was running 12psi with the controler ) it would open my BOV up nice. if you remove the BOV all together and stick a pipe over your turbo im pretty sure you will get that VL Turbo sound (i could be wrong) ditched the 200 for a beemer ill never go back
The purpose of the BOV. When you change gears, the butterfly in the throttle body snaps shut for a moment. The air coming from the turbo now has no where to go, Bov sits between throttle body and turbo venting the air and keeping the turbo spinning hard on gear changes. Without it the turbo stalls placing huge loads on the thust bearing and you have to spool it back up on boost. Laggy
so running more than 14psi can result in it seperating from the shaft due to over speeding and winding up in the cat. Its basically glued on. You can run more but you're on borrowed time if you do.
At low boost it wont do any harm but if your running much over 1 bar it has the potential to snap the shaft with the stress over time. Plus every time you change gear its stalling your compressor so your boost response will be a fraction slower.
i have an r33 series 2. all u do is add a pod filter...make sure its apexi or hks or greddy. that gives you a induction sound, then you need to block off the bov which isnt hard. takes 30 mins. results in a similar flutter not as high pitched. s14asr20det. do you have a front mount intercooler? i wanna get my skyline sounding like ur sr ive heard a fmic makes it flutter better
I wouldn't welcome compressor surge on every gear, especially when daily driving doesn't call for max boost every time. What spring are you running on that Tial?
hey i have a 99 version 6 Scooby STI, standard apart from hks hyper muffler, runs 1 bar on full boost but no flutter noise...how would i achieve this?? i dont drive the car hard but yours sounds awsome at low boost, cheers mate and savage clip :)
Ive heard the RB20s and 25s run ceramic turbos that don't like much boost/abuse, although I could be wrong. Your best bet is to ask on a forum, sorry I can't be any more help!
Hi there im a noob to car modification on the performance side of things. I have a 1991 Nissan Skyline GTS 2.0Litre turbo wif stock RB20DET Turbo. is there any other way to get this sound without damaging your car???? thanks in advance
You get the same noise/effect when you remove the DV/BOV alltogether, as when the throttle body butterfly shuts, there is nowhere to vent the air, therefore building pressure against the turbo, making the fluttery noise. Next time someone says Compressor Surge is wastegate chatter - politely correct them :P
I can assure you, my car isnt running an SSQV, and this is definitely not "wastegate chatter". Wastegate chatter is one of those phrases that is used on the internet, but that isnt what your hearing. People think its the wastegate, but its actually the turbo itself making the noise. The sound is Compressor Surge: the fluttery sound is the air travelling against the turbo blades when my DV/BOV (Tial) doesnt open at low boost.
Wastegate chatter is a different sound altogether, you can hear it on my videos of my old MR2 running a T67 and TypeR wastegate (with screamer). That sound is and will only ever be got by running no BOV, or a BOV that's wound tight so it doesn't open unless on full boost. I'll do a little vid of my car doing it when I get chance...awesome sound.
Compressor surge eating up turbos is a bit of an urban myth to be honest. Countless people are running no DV whatsoever, and no-one has noticed any unnatural wear to their turbo. Saying this, id be relucatant to run no DV on a ceramic turbo. Just one of those over-hyped internet myths. Thanks for the concern though :).
lol mine makes the same fucking noise right after is shifts

sounds funny, it like has compressor surge then sounds like its got a bov when you change gear.

how to make compressor surge?is good or bad?do bov have a sound like compressor surge?
Tsukuy0mii 1 year ago
This is just flutter, and unless running very high boost levels it's totally harmless. Truely damaging compressor surge occures during boosting.
munnsey 2 years ago 11
@munnsey Thank you for knowing your stuff. A blow off valve will only change the ON BOOST "surge line."

Is it prooved that this sound (turbo surge) will destroy the turbo after a time?

Yes it's a bad thing because it will tear up your turbo.

@vyraz .3 would be plenty enough to get that effect. .01 is still enough to make some bovs flutter.

i honestly dont like the sound of that i think u would b better off with the hks ssqv cuz that has a little turbo flutter plus a nice whistle
chvy350ss 3 years ago
you have bad taste. i think i know what whistle your talking about and i hate it. flutters the best
chevapi2 3 years ago
lol the flutter is bad for the intake. having your turbo flutter like that will definately leave a crack in your intake after a while.
honestly i like the flutter noise too, but too bad its a bad thing to have lmao

dont know y u got thumbs down. hks does have a great sound and it doesnt blow at really low load. making a little tiny bit of flutter.

I have the same sound on my Cupra R when I let of the throttle. Is this surge damaging to the turbo compressor?

yes, thats what BOV's or recircs are for

I'm sure it was the cars' fault you couldn't get it to work right. Never go back because you can't solve problems.

This is true. This video is just a demo of the exact effect you are describing

actually if were being technical its when the throttle is closed but apart from that a good description :)

Yes, the rb25s have a ceramic turbine wheel,
so running more than 14psi can result in it seperating from the shaft due to over speeding and winding up in the cat. Its basically glued on. You can run more but you're on borrowed time if you do.

sound lovely mate would my t28 make this noise without the metal turbo elbow??

Yep it certainly will. Either remove the BOV alltogether, or get a BOV with a tight spring (like I have).

my s14 sr20det (blacktop) makes that sound runnging 6psi with the bov vacule line blocked up

surge just lessens the life of the turbo from the eratic back spinning. its hard on the cartrage..

Running about 0.8bar boost at WOT mate, but my DV opens up at about 0.6, so what your hearing is low boost - anything under 0.6 bar :)
