yep I have the same rattle on my white 32GB 3GS. If the vibrate switch is on silent then it rattles like crazy and if you tap either below the camera or to the right of it, you'll notice something loose inside the phone
it is the accelerometer!!!!!!!!! in order for the phone to know if it has been tilted, the metal ball in a small capsule slides one way or the other depending on the angle the phone is tilted thus causing a rattling noise.
I am on my 4th 32gb white 3gs. They have all had this rattle, and the sim tray won't fit flush. The build quality sucks compared to my 16gb 3g. I shouldn't have upgraded I guess. I just trusted Apple made a quality product, this is my first complaint with their quality.
I have a rattle, not sure if it's the same though. Mine's definitely from the mute switch (but only when it's in the mute position). If it's not your mute switch, I'd take it back to apple because that does sound pretty loud.
It is not supposed to rattle according to Applecare. They have all seemed oblivious to the rattle. How I don't know, I have gotten 4 in a row with the rattle. Someone dropped the ball in the production line I guess.
same problem with mine , it's the autofocus mechanism not working properly. Not all the time though...
