One of the great moments of personal freedom in all of opera, where the five participants overcome their individual histories of frustration, hurt and bitterness with themselves and each other and reach the perfect understanding of themselves and each other. It is a moment where grace is achieved and given form, both in the narrative and the music.
This production is wonderful, and the singers here really did it justice. I heard part of an interview this afternoon (3/26/11) with Morris during a Met intermission broadcast where he said that he had no interest in performing Sachs until Levine convinced him to do it, and that Meistersinger is now his favorite opera. Morris is a more introverted Sachs than many, but his acting skills carry the day....watch at the end of the quintet at the way he looks at Eva from behind as a father would.
Apart from that i Really like the customs and the way that was staged , the stages are great and flawless , i hate modern depictions they are ridiculous indeed.
Of course it is an American production and can be justified for that reason , but at Bayreuth it would have been a sacrilege not to recreate the masters work as the master had envisioned and created it.
Recreating a medieval German Nuremberg and a Wagner opera with Blacks Asians and indonesians as the chorus!?How can that stand it is ludicrous , that thing is only a European phenomenon you WONT BUT WONT see ANY NON ASIAN in asian classical cultural recreations and theaters you wont see ANY NON African in african tribal exibitions ONLY IN EUROPE you will see every race of the world recreating ....WAGNER! Meistersingers original meaning was culture can only improve inside its national charachter
danke 4 posting! i have this one on dvd; and i saw meister last night in cinci--home of jimmy levine! outstanding! wish it was longer! during the 'wach auf' 2 choirs in the balcony flanked the stage with moving effect!
@authourbrown I was there on Saturday!!! It was SUCH a great production. How about the Night Watchman!? What a voice! I went up there to see my voice teacher; he sings in the Cincinnati Opera chorus every summer. I was worried about the six hour length (trying for even the most ardent opera enthusiast), but I was literally on the edge of my seat almost the whole time. I absolutely loved every minute of it!
The rest of the cast is great, so the decision for purchase here depends on Morris: Some reviewers complain he doesn't hit the lower notes correctly. Others (like me) appreciate the smooth tone of voice.
Those who bought tickets got their money's worth of heavy wood, no minimalistic empty space staging.
As always Levine take no chances, reaches no heights, but therefore makes no mistakes.
-I agree with you about Morris :) As for the staging, well, that's the Met. Personally, though, watching a German-Romantic staging of Wagner makes me squirm...
I was looking for a good "Meistersinger"- recording (and found it here: great singers, worst staging, though ...). Unfortunately I found some CREEPY videos related to it ... (Enrique von Ofterdingern...). When the F... will they stop this "interpretation" of Wagner???
Yep, that's Karita Mattila as Eva. James Morris is Hans Sach, Ben Heppner is Walther. This is a pretty good DVD of the opera (with Rene Pape as Pogner). :)
Every note he wrote was exquisite, was it? I'll remind myself of that next time I watch a cast try to slog its way through (say) Act II of Die Walkuere. Let's not get carried away, Wagner fans!
If Wagner had only written Act II of Die Walkuere (sic) he would still be recognised as a truly great composer. Siegmund's death is one of the great scenes in opera.
As good as it gets. Bravi to all. I'm always surprised at how well Levine does Wagner. His Lohengrin, for instance. Brings out all sorts of nuance. Thanks.
No, Your are wrong! Wagner is the Greatest Musician of the 19th century..... no Human History~! Heil~ Wagner~!

James Morris seems rather uninvolved here - is this normal for him?

Beautiful music. I miss Walter's price song from this oper. For about a year it was here on youtube with Ben Heppner. One of the best singers.

This is SO slow it almost grinds to a halt.

Morris is often weak of voice. The others are okay. The tenor who plays Beckmesser overacts crudely and badly. There are better DVDs of this opera.
saagua1953 2 years ago
Beckmesser is not a ténor but a baryton.
and we don't see him in this scene.

"Nasal" is not a problem, but the wobble, wobble wobble wobble . . . (But Karita Mattila is adorable)

They should rename this the "Nasal-singer". Terrible cast.

hmmmm...... probably you should clean your ears... thi is not a "Kna" cast but nothing to do with "nasal".

Brian Large editing is OK.
Sound and picture excellent.
Grade A, a good safe choice, none better.

Man, I wish Wagner had written more music like this quintet. Exquisite!
'Selig wie die Sonne' starts at around 3:55 or so..
