It gets quite warm.. but not to the point where it gets uncomfortable (subjective) or it has to start down-clocking to prevent damage (objective), that said, unless you really don't want kids, i'd reccomend keeping it off your lap
I have it and carry it to school every day. Unless your a panzy it shouldnt be a problem. If your want light get the 1340. But Just call up dell when the 4670 is installed in it say your gpu is malfunctioning and have them install a motherboard with it simple as that.

TL:DR, heat isn't a dealbreaker

I was thinking of getting the Dell Studio XPS 16, do you think it would be to heavy/bulky for lugging around to classes?
I hope they switch to the recently released Radeon Mobile 4k series before i buy!
