the difference between desert orchid and kauto star is that dessie never sherked a battle weres kauto looks good beating ordinary horses off level weights , dessie won victor chandler , whitbread gold cup , irish grand national , racing post chase , gainsborgh chase giving lumps of weight away , thats the difference between the two dessie won run kauto in2 the ground , dessie was still winning at 12 years old in my mind dessie was way past kauto star but thats my oppinion
King Dessie was hard as nails. Kauto has been brilliant but he is a fragile soul. Take nothing away from KS but Des was a different type of animal...it would be like Tyson vs Ali. Intriguing......
While Kauto was a great horse he couldnt beat Dessie. Imagine Kauto trying to run and jump 3 or 4 out with Dessie, he would be demoralised. Dessie would take a length out the field ever jump. Was still winning at age of 11. Give 2 stone away at times and won with lbs to spare. Won the Gold cup 2 weeks after winning a race.
@mallafets I think you are right I'm a big big fan of Kauto but when Dessie got upsides over fences out the country he could take the race out of his opponents long before the winning post.
I'm so glad i was around to watch Dessie. Actually 'glad' isn't the right word to use, privileged is more accurate.
Fearless, with the heart of a lion and braver than the brave, Des threw himself at his fences with the clear determination to get over the obstacles faster than the rest. He never ever ducked a battle and would put his heart and soul into beating the competition.
denman is probably the only horse near in terms of weight carrying but even then dessie is unrivalled, kauto may have been a kempton specialist and both have won tingle creeks but i would probably say kauto would have beaten dessie over 2 miles but dessie would have won over 3 miles just by galloping him into the ground.
@jonnybeeston ... true legend. i agree that at least denman runs in the handicaps. kauto wins races where the conditions suit him ...aka tingle creeks, betfair chase, lexus etc. not enough of the big uns are competitive now like the vc, tingle creek.
@jonnybeeston When as Kauto ever conceeded 2 stone and won? Never and never will do. Not in the same league as Dessie. The best I've seen in my lifetime...
Surely there has been no better technical jumper of fences. Often, as for example in Racing Post Chase and at Kempton, was his ability to take lengths of horses by simply jumping better than any other horse.
Wonderful performance in racing Post Chase by Dessie...easily on a parr with KS performance at levels in 2009 King George! Gave Delius 2st & Seagram, a future good National winner, 2st 7lb!
RIP Dessie - you will forever be the King of Kempton.
