What is beautiful about this scene is that it's perfectly executed as far as the shooting goes. For the first thief, instead of wasting time and energy extending his arm, Vincent shoots directly from the hip as soon as it leaves the holster. The other thief, being too shocked to react quickly enough, the distance between the two allows Vincent to fully extend for accuracy (as if he needed it, ya know?).

The camera angle just gives a sense of the gun being further to the left than it is, relative to Tom Cruise. His gun was on his right hip so he could only ever use his left hand to swipe the gun away, so to the right. But Cruise doesn't merely swipe the gun, he knocks it OUT of the thug' hands.
