The tony sound is all thanks to arranger Claus Ogerman, one of the greatest jazz arrangers. You can tell her producer was trying to sell her to the grownups as well as the teens, but by her second album they cut the jazzy stuff out and decided to stick with bubblegum pop.
this is from her debut album "I'll Cry If I Want To" Every song has the word cry in it or is about crying. All of the songs except 3 (It's My Party, Judy's Turn To Cry & Just Let Me Cry) were slow and jazzy. It was the kind of music adults might have a romantic dinner to.
This is one of those infrequent recordings where her voice isn't double-tracked. I think she pulls this off pretty good. She hardly uses any vibrato, which is an appropriate approach for a bossa nova beat.
Just heard B.Striesand's live version(1963)& it just doesn't have the magic that Julie London & Leslie Gore have with their respective versions. Vocal range & abiltiy, well,of the 3,Striesand DOMINATES without effort, but I've learned that when it comes to making songs "Magical", power and vocal range,by themselves dont do it. It takes something special. Not that Striesand doesnt have magic, shes phenominal, but on this song,Julie & Leslie's versions are the best that I've heard.
I used to think no version of this song could ever be as good as Julie London's original, and that still holds true, but only when compared by genere...as a more "pop" and somewhat more "optomistic" version....Lesley's version is FANTASTIC! And it's grown on me to the point where I love it as much as the original. And up until now, I never would have believed anyone, if they had said that would happen.
Crystal Gayle sang this as well; she listened to Lesley on the radio as a child :)

Mari Wilson's version is still the best by far. It's even better than Julie London's or Ella Fitzgerald's versions!

agreed. try ella's, lulu, or joan baez too.
Saw Gore sing this in person and she tore it up with a much blusier arr.

Great song from Lesley's first album titled I'll Cry If I Want To!

A classic from the 50's, reinterpreted in 1963 with amazing maturity by this then emerging song stylist of just 17 years of age. Lesley forever!
