Hi Lizzette, don't drink them. My doctor said I could let it go flat and then drink it but that would defeat it right? It will make your pouch strech, and i know its hard but try other drinks. Take care.((HUGS)) Norma
The books I've been reading up on after surgery say you can't drink any carbonated drinks whatsoever...best ask Tom/Allison/Amiela/Fab/Dee.. I'm sure they'd know better than I do...
i drink a little here and there. I mostley drink water and hot choc. But i cant handle the diet pepsi any more i can drink like diet sprite but thats not often .
I don't think a sip every now and then will hurt you. I, for one, do not like the way diet cokes feel now. I use to LOVE diet coke but now the carbonation bubbles in my throat and it feels nasty. It is a weird feeling.
My surgeon says that after 8 months post op an occasional sugar-free carbonated drink is fine. During the first 8 months is when you are most likely to develop ulcers. Drinking them habitally anytime, however, can lead to a stretched pouch. So, my thought is after the 8 months having a few drinks of a carbonated beverage a couple times a month isn't going to hurt much. I don't every want to fall back into my bad habit (3 cans of coke a day) again. take care - jenn
Can you say ulcers? That's what I was told carbonated beverages causes for those of us with pouches. Don't risk it. OK, I admit I take a swig of coke every now and then. But that's as far as it goes.
I would say if you do want to drink soda..Do it in moderation. I mean maybe on a special occasion. I have drank soda a handful of times, on a special occasion. I like the fizzy, I was told the discomfort of not being able to burp due to anatomy and gas can overfill us leaving us uncomfortable, and it does sometimes! If I am thirsty for CO2 I will drink Pierre H2O, a much better alternative to sticky soda! FYI if I drink Pierre h20 I find I am not as hungry thru the day..proly bc it is so filling
My nutritionist put it this way: When you fill up a balloon with air it grows & distends then you can fill it up with lots of stuff & the carbonation in your pouch has the same effect it allows you to put a lot more food in. Being the visual person that I am this worked to dissuade me from drinking soda.
what my surgeon told me was no carbonated drinks and if i really need it then to let it get flat, but then it tastes nasty so i just stay away from sodas
I was told the reason we should avoid carbonation is because the CO2 can cause expansion, distention, and because of the distention, pain. Also, because the acidic nature of carbonation causes irritation to gastric tissues. The expansion and irritation could cause a problem with areas that are still healing.
I was told no carbonation whatsoever because it's not good for the pouch, and because when you drink soda, you have a "tendency to go back to your old eating habits". But I know someone who has had gastric bypass prolly about 10 years ago, and she drinks soda (diet) all of the time, and is fine. So I'm not 100% sure what to think either!
some doctors say its ok if you let them sit for awhile then drink..(diet) I am out 4 years and made a personal des. not to drink it but it really is up to you..love rosemary
I was told no carbonation ever! Not even stirred and made flat cuz it will still fizz when it hits your pouch. The fizz will cause problems over time. We certainly don't need it to sustain life so forget about it! It's not worth the risk.
i personally think the tiny bubbles from carbonation aren't gonna do damage to our pouches. i think they're strong enough to handle the fizz which isn't that fizzy anyway. now if you gulp it and FILL the pouch with it then i can see it happening over time. i don't have the same taste for soda now but i do endulge now and again, but only a few sips.
there are different views on it from surgeon to surgeon and patient to patient! don't ya hate when that happens??
I was told no soda also, but it wasn't clear for how long. I don't have anything to add to the great advice you've already gotten, but this is a really good question. :)
I know a few folks that "drink soda from time to time" but I was informed to not drink carbonated soda, ever. It was explained to me that the bubbles "swell" the pouch and can cause it to stretch.
Phosphorus leeches calcium from bones, and soda contains phosphorus. If your calcium level is low, there is a chance of it robbing it from your bones. That is why they don't recommend giving soda to kids either. Just one thought on soda, for anyone.
My surgeon & NUT say no carbonated soda, ever. Hypothetically, I've heard it can stretch the pouch. But the main reasoning they gave me was that it is an easy bad habit to re-start ... and one bad habit begat another bad habit begat another bad habit, you get the picture? I haven't had one in over 21 months (since the night before surgery), and I don't miss them. And I was an addict before surgery.
i can't do Carbonated Drinks , it hurts and i feel uncomfable, the only way past it is to swish the drink in your mouth to get rid of the fizz, but here the catch "i hate flat pop" so it a no go for me!!
i remember the surgeon said it could stretch the pouch and stay away for at least a year
Hey there! I was told by my surgeon that it could stretch your pouch and also make you really uncomfortable. He told me to just stay away from them, and for me that has been REALLY hard...lol I know that everyones surgeons are different so that's just what mine told me. Hope you have a great Christmas!
