I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Mercedes vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and EFi injectors clean as new!
Wicked RR! How I wish I had kept my 70 RR V code (long gone engine) W/413 Maxie and cast iron 6 barrel,18 spine, pistol,Dana rear. Mid 11 second car until one day on the 1-2 shift street racing,I broke the whole damn linkage off the tranny,(pistol shifter loose in my hand) got sideways bad, still beat the that 427 68 Camaro X bracket car......to that point anyway! If I could only go back to 1987. Post more vids if you read this, thanks.
apart from the technical problem with the gearbox [even on european gearshifts, a problem with lockout can occur - ie 1st into 2nd when the engine has been overrevved] very good shifting,
No special hood needed for a 440. The GTX and Roadrunner in 68-69 shared the same hood (GTX came with a 440).. The big factor is what kind of intake you run.
I had a '69 Road Runner 383 4 speed that was tricky between 1st and 2nd. My buddy swore he was a master at speed shifting. He missed the shift, naturally, and I thought my heart and the engine would explode. "Sorry man, let me try that again" Yup...same thing. Friends don't let friends try to speed shift!
no man. my dads best friend tought him how to drive stick and do all the tricks. Him and i go for a drive sometimes and im still blown away at some of the things he has picked up. Not always is it a bad thing. Only if your friend doesnt know the tranny and clutch!
my 5 speed is t5 world class out of 90 mustang, so i shouldnt have that problem...my problem is it lasting under the power...post more vids when shes totally done
nice roadrunner man, car sounds good and seems like its got some serious power...im putting a 5speed in my 71 tubbed scamp with a 340....post some more vids once you break her in and shift it like an animal
Thanks! I hope your 5 speed doesn't have the 2-3 shift issue like mine. A bad batch of termecs were released in 2004-05 that has some bad synchronizers in them affecting the 2-3 shift above 5000 rpms. I'm putting in a full MSD ignition with a 6AL2 processor., it should be great. More videos will come for sure when I figure out to over come the 2-3 shift.
I'm a paw-paw these days and have sadly reduced myself to a Previa mini van. LOL! Don't let off the gas pedal when working the clutch. Make sure the seat is at the right position so your leg\foot reach can depress the clutch easily. Press in to release the clutch hit the next gear & slip the foot of the side of the clutch (like it slipped off). Don't let off the gas while doing this. Like one fluid motion. Once you you learn, it's extremely fast. Start slow and low engine speed to learn. Repost
Thanks for the tutorial. When this video was taken, the engine had like 200 miles on it and the transmission had around 50 miles. The hydraulic clutch was brand new. So speed shifting is put on hold until everything is broken in (which it still isn't). I shouldn't have even done what I did in the video. Later we found out the aftermarket 5 speed (tremec tko 500) would not allow to shift 2 to 3 above 5 grand due to it being defective. The 1-2 shift was solid.
I know its been a long time since i commented on this. hagenmi1 my dad and I went out in his 69 again. MAN its good to feel muscle at ur foot and torque... lots of it. Question. what is ur rear diff? im curious!
That's awesome! My runner has a dana 3.54:1 in it. However, coupled to my tremec TKO 500 trans, it's like the stock 4 speed with 4.30:1gear in first gear.
Damn. I just struck solid gold. My 383 has Dynomax turbos, and thanks to you I know now what my 440 will sound like. I was looking at Borlas but nah....that won't happen.
It's a defect in the trans, can't hit 3rd above 5000 RPMs. All the rest of the gears are great. Tremec won't acknowledge the problem. I thought the 1-2 shift was solid...
plan on pokeing and stroking to 431 or 496 Big cam, insane ported 906 heads and a old weiand intake setup.
Like the color mines a oddball factory Y2 yellow With f8 Green interior with f7 inserts and a green top lol.....IDK what they where thinking with the color combo there, i guess if i break the fender tag down enough it would be a 1 of 1 car.
I can say with great certainly that color combo is rare for a good reason :) Mine was originally vitamin c, but that was way too general lee for me so my father and I decided to go for the same green he back in 1969. I like your plans for the engine.
Haha yeah :) switching from k-2 orange was a good move its a bit of a overused color IMO.... I was thinking about running a 5 speed but i could rebuild buy and Rebuild a A-833 for the price of one... and if you cant shift over 5,000 its not really an upgrade :( unless you want Better gas mileage :P
My tremec TKO 500 is defective like many others I read about. The 5000 max RPM only applies to the 2-3 shift, the rest are great. Keisler says it's the shifter (me) but since his video, I have confirmed it's the shifting RPM. I have a 3.54:1 dana 60, with the tremec it's like having a A833 with a 4.30:1 in first.
We also have a 1969 GTX with a 727. Fun, yes...but not like dropping the clutch on a manual. Sticks are so much more fun on the street. The 1-2 and 3-4 are solid, but with my tremec, you can't hit 3rd above 5 grand. Common problem and it's bullshit for the price. THX for the feedback

No not at all, Dana 60 with 3.54:1 gear. In addition, the Tremec TKO 5-speed has a really low first gear making it equivalent to a stock 4 speed with a 4.30:1 gear. Check out Keislers speed calculator.
Headmen headers (junk) with a full TTI 2.5 exhaust with Dynomax Hemi mufflers. The cam is an old Hemi grind purple shaft 280/280, the exact specs escape me right now. Maybe .474/.474 lift and 110 centerline? Thanks for the feedback, it's a fun torque monster.

It sounds as though there may be a dropped cylinder, there at the house. That all waved aside, you may already know that what you were doing in the vid is called an Italian tune-up, and it friggin works. :-)
Your 100% correct. 2 plugs completely fouled out and a third on the way out. Not bad for a 5 cylinder :) I need to make a new video of the RR hitting on 8 cylinders. Now I know that my transmission is defective and won't hit third over 5000 RPM's (trans locks out). It's a known defect in batch of Tremecs mine came out of. It only effects the 2-3 shift. When you contact Tremec they blame the shifter (me) then say it's not a racing trans (TKO-500) WTF. Other then that, I love the trans...
