  • Probabaly would have been a good idea to wear a tee shirt than a sweatshirt...

  • "A finite amount of crap is just crap, whereas an infinite amount of crap is hope." <3

  • Better than YouTube... how...?

  • what is big torn? i'm sorry, but i have no idea.

  • @Dougmore961 its bit torrent and its used to view and use illegal software and videos

  • if I WERE a girl. . . Come on Hank, the English language has a subjunctive!

  • I talked about Net Neutrality for my final persuasive speech last semester...thank you for helping me get an A in the class.

  • that thing is RuneScape

  • Maybe a dumb question, here, but I've been wondering for sometime now: Can't we just provide ourselves with internet access, get our own pond of water supply? What IS the internet, anyway? It's not tangible (unless it's like that South Park episode) so the only limit to it's access is the limits imposed by providers of internet to internet providers (or not).

I have a feeling I'm missing a very important point to understanding the net. Or not.

Help? (Please talk about this more!)

  • my solution. high pressure water pumps.

  • i love your analogies

  • "An infinite amount of crap is hope."

    Best.

    Quote.

    Ever.

  • @DewDrop411 I wish my teachers were that cool! :(

  • The only other thing I have to say is… Try making this argument when we only had dialup access 10-20 yrs ago. People like this are the flat earth liberals. They really can’t think beyond yesterday or tomorrow. Imagine in 10 more years how fast internet connections will become? There is a reason for increase in speed, cheaper, better, and more accessible & reliable just about EVERYWHERE! Learn about it. And I’ll give you a hint the government had nothing to do with it.

  • @drshlotzkin So then you support giving companies the power to control the internet?

  • I'm glad you hid your DOUCHE BAG with that towel... Good call.

  • Im WAY younger then Hank and John.. and my parents are older then 50.. my dad turned 50 when i was 5/6 :|

  • COMCAST VIDEOOOOOOOOO!

  • maybe they should just regulate the crap for the sake of the awesomeness. I'd like to know what amount of bandwidth the Kardashians or Lil Wayne or Twilight steal from fruitful internet use such as vlogbrothers, academic research, forex trading and porno

  • Ron Paul has said that he wants to keep the internet tax free and unregulated.

  • No joke, loading this video is taking forever. Nap time.

  • Price of internet increases and then fewer people use it, and/or the increase in the price yields greater investment making more bandwidth for everyone. It's like gasoline. The prices are increasing slightly, but investments in new ways to find it mean that about every time we make a new estimate for how long the reserves will last, it is greater than the number of years expected 10 years ago. This situation assumes corporatism doesn't take hold.

  • lol Your dad's only a few years older than my mom and I'm 15 :D

  • mmm... warm, wonderful giraffe sex!

  • this machine pwns noobs

  • "confusing on my body!" XD XD

  • i dont understand. is this just a threat to americas internet acess or the entire world? even if it is just in america it would still have an effect on the rest of the world anyway, wouldnt it? so, since its only america's choice, isnt that wrong? shouldnt it be everyones decision seeing as how this would affect the internet for everyone? or am i getting this wrong?

  • It's sad that pretty much half your age, and my dad is older...

  • Hank's getting showered in giraffe sex... xDDDDD

  • The part of you in the shower reminded me a lot of Bill Nye the Science Guy. (:

  • Technically speaking, comcast has the right to do anything they wish so long as it does not break the law, because it is their company, and they are responsible to the stock holders.

Their competitors could take them down a notch by saying "we don't throttle you down" and then there would be a pricing war between the ISP companies, and pricing wars are almost universally good for the consumer. :)

  • I would probably pay a lot money to have full book-borrowing access to both of the Green brothers' personal libraries. I CANNOT EVEN READ HALF THE TITLES IN THE BACKGROUND, AND YET, THEY STILL LOOK INTERESTING.

  • I wish I would have seen this when I was writing my 13 page paper on net neutraility

  • Who else found John sitting on Hank's shoulder kinda creepy???

  • Hello Hank!

On Wednesday I will be presenting a persuasive speech on Net Neutrality for my Oral Communications class. I hope it would be okay if I used a part of your video "Net Neutrality in the shower" from May 3, 2010. I would be using footage from 2:46-3:40. Thanks so much for introducing the concept to me in the first place back in 2010! All my research has been very fascinating and enlightening. Hope you have a great evening!

    D.F.T.B.A.

  • "Infinite amounts of crap can be thrown at the wall, and some of it will stick." That is a lovely mental image, thanks for that.

  • "It was cold and hot. Cold then hot. It was confusing on my body..." X)

  • ISP s must have the right to charge for the data they supply. Content creators need to collect for their work too. Freedom of crap (speech) does not equate with freedom from paying for the dissemination of that crap.

  • How can we increase overall bandwidth for all of the internet?

  • "I'm sorry to say this, but if they are legal able to do it, they'll do it." Scary thought, but do we have any actual examples of telecom companies to this date giving such exclusivities? No, we don't.

  • I'm using internet for almost 7 years and have never experienced any of this fud being spread here about evul corporations and such. Nobody is limiting anything on my pipe (yep no bt limits). Even if someone would limit some sites at expense of others who is best to judge of what my needs are - me or some corruptible bureaurat? Last I checked anything that governments owns or regulates turns into bankrupt or corrupt mess. If it works fine now, then why the fck you want to change it?

  • thanks for explaining this for me

  • I can see why this video was so popular. Great stuff!

  • Hank, I love how you put giraffe sex first on your list of the internet :)

  • @DewDrop411 that's awesome :)

  • it was also my birthday!

  • wow, that voice at 0:07 was quite a shock when playing this video full blast

  • John is NEVER blinking, and Hank is ALWAYS adjusting his glasses. just a thought.

  • My professor, a nerdfighter, showed this video in my media class this week when we started talking about net neutrality and it made me smile knowing that Hank in the shower is being used as a teaching aid at my university lol :)

  • What about Facebook??

they should cut that.. it's too addicting anyway (Damn.Facebook.Too.Bloody.Addicting- DFTBA)

  • ooooooh. I have the same birthday as the vlogbrothers dad! =D *notes down*

  • Your Dad has the same Birthday as my dad! x

  • "Confusing on my body!"

  • it took me 20 minutes to watch this video.. Irony.

  • I love how you used a shower to explain this :D

  • I have a research paper due next month for my Professional Ethics and Social Issues in Computer Science class. I chose Net Neutrality as my topic because not only am I using it as a way to force knowledge of the subject upon myself (I've wanted to learn about it for many months but at the same time I keep putting it off)-- I am also using it as an excuse to bring the Awesomeness of Brotherhood 2.0 and Nerdfighteria into my presentation! :D

BECAUSE WHERE WOULD THE WORLD BE WITHOUT IT?! D:

  • thumbs up for the sake of Katherine

  • My video froze while you were dissing comcast.

    I have comcast internet.

    :D

  • @ginkner

    verizon ftw.

  • Very good argument. Crap like savetheinternet make very vague arguments with influental speaking to hope for the change. (but people are going to wait until something happens anyway...)

also i like the shower scene :o

  • I totally have the same birthday as your Dad...

  • No joke - my internet was so bad a few weeks ago that it DID take half an hour to download a Vlogbrothers video.

"An infinite amount of crap is hope." Somewhere in there, there's a valuable message.

  • Comment removed

  • lol funny and full of info love it

  • Hank reminds me of Bill Nye the Science Guy.

  • Aaaaand, we just lost. :(

  • Very good points.... let's hope for infinite amounts of crap!

  • Hey Hank, with all the net neutrality stuff in the news, I just rewatched this as a refresher. Question--why don't they just turn down the nozzle on porn? I mean, I realize that it's another BitTorrent situation, and that since it's not illegal they have no right to do that... but... I know porn is responsible for a huge percentage of internet traffic, and it doesn't seem like having a bit less of it would be such a loss to the innovative creativity of the internet. What do you think?

  • @x4812k hahha, wow, i am watching this video for the same exact reason and have the same question haha

  • @x4812k i would say because if google/verizon/at&t started promoting their own versions of porn sites, it would look bad on them....

  • @liddlexxleahxx01 yeah but google and verizon don't promote their own versions of illegal downloading. they could still turn down the nozzle on porn and save bandwidth

  • @x4812k imo the issue isn't that they're trying to save bandwidth, despite what they say... they really want to promote their sites and slow down competition from outsiders/make them pay for faster speeds. so basically they want to turn down the nozzle on the things that aren't provided by them (or, like you said, are illegal). buuuuuuuut maybe hank will see your question soon xP

  • Give me one example of that happening!!!

  • Asdf! Adam Savage and the Vlogbrothers in the same video :O

  • He's 50, or 60 years old?? Either way, I'm 21 and my dad just turned 60!!

  • cant we just make more?

  • I have that towel.......you got it @ Target Hank...

  • "confusing on my body" ! haha

  • I'm 14 and my parents 55...... and u think ur parents think they're old when ur 30? lol i luv ur videos, I'm watching them in order from the beginning!

  • "whereas an infinite amount of crap is - hope." is he actually referring to obama there or is it me over - interpreting? because if he is, it's just great!

-well it's even great if he isn't, meaning it's simply great...great!

  • Very cold and then very hot!

  • wait youre 40 years old? you look like a college guy. weird

  • @cautionnow6 He's thirty. xD

  • Why aren't they already doing this, Hank?

Did you forget to mention the fact the Net Neutrality is not nor has ever been the law?

  • or mabey the cd copy of your favorite game just broke and your need to download a torrent cause you dont want to pay another $45.99

  • My dad's birthday is two days after your dad's but he is quite a bit younger.

  • lol i know someone named hope

  • "An infinite amount of crap is hope." This is a nice quote.

  • The thing greater than youtube that will conquer the economy...isnt it clear? G O O G L E

  • @FlareTheUncalled777 Google owns Youtube. xD

  • @FlareTheUncalled777 then we must gather the forces and destroy google before they raise!!

  • @ThePsychoticScyth396 it is too late to destroy google.

  • I just makes you wonder what his wife thought about him getting in the shower with his clothes on.........

  • Whoa, my dad is 50 too, but I'm only a teenager.

  • @theyellowyoshi i think he said 60

  • @theyellowyoshi

Pretty sure he said 60, not 50

  • Thank you for this funny videoi.

  • "confusing on my body!!!!!" best line ever. great video Hank!

  • They attempt to stop bit torrent a new method will be found causing a never ending arms race.

  • Hank my brizzly haha, you are the funniest nerd out!

if there were many more people like you then nerds

    would become cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Did I just.. Watch a nerd taking a shower with his clothes on.. And.. Enjoy it? O_o

  • You should see how I can go from loading a 4 minute youtube video in a matter of seconds, to barely being able to load it in ten minutes once the clock strikes 6pm. My ISP is already deciding *when* the speed is there or not. They claim they don't, but at midnight, like clockwork, everything always speeds back up. And like most, it can decide just how much data I require in any given month to fulfil my gaming/video viewing needs. It's inevitable. This is why we can't have nice things.

  • Hehehehehehehehe you moterboated the water.

  • 2 point ...1) Are telcom companies not already doing packet routing .. .which is a fancy technical legal name of doing the same thing .. second isnt the whole argument around net neutrality been put under big Question when companies like google (have a vested interest in fighting a proxy war against old media companies) personally I am much happy to see Google win this one .. but the fact that this is pure battle is not so much true ..

  • I loved I <3 Lucy!!!

  • im 14 and my dad is 65, wow it sounds odd now

  • Aw man... i feel smarter now... now i have to go watch Weird Al or something to dumb myself out...

  • internet : communism.probably the only place where it works, but it works beautifully.

  • i'm sorry to mention this hank, even though it was vital to your video (...), you wasted water, and you're the ecogeek =S

  • I think the next amazing cool thing would be aomething like Facebook+youtube+BLogger

  • I can now say I've seen Hank in the shower.

  • Companys should not be allowed to have that much level of control. Comcast already looks in to your data being transferred. If you back up your data off site. Make sure you password it with something. You never know how is looking on it.

  • Hank, I love yah, but you're ignoring basic free market principles, and the beauty of capitalism.

If "ComCast" cuts off YouTube but not their own service, and their service isn't as good as YouTube, they will lose customers to people who are still allowing YouTube. They will either live with this loss of customers, improve their service, or return the YooTubez.

  • A finite amount of crap is also called... television.

  • I'm confuesed as to what bandwith is? Is it an international thing or only applicable to cable? At some point will the Internet run out? I understand electricty must be produced aswell , but the Internet is just radio-type signal is it not... so how can it be used up?

  • Weirdly enough your dad is a year older than my dad and I'm about 12 years younger than you.

Anywho, This is a very interesting topic that I am now going to investigate. DFTBA!

  • Interesting metaphore with the shower there. made perfect sence! :D

  • haha "why is it taking 45 minutes to watch charlie bites brother's finger"

  • Ah! Scary Hank voice! lol

  • The only thing about this that makes me wonder is the issue you mention briefly here; price. What is going to happen when these companies have price problems? Won't that make the cost of internet go up up up? because if they can't afford more bandwidth, they won't take it out of their own pockets. Won't that mean (some) people won't be able to afford the internet? Thus shutting off the water anyway.

I'm not for or against everything- this is a new idea to me, I'm just trying to understand.

  • second most amazing site: FACEBOOK

  • You have so much energy, Hank. You don't even need to be a hot girl.

  • I LOVE NERDS!!!

  • that made me laugh haha :D

  • i like that his guitar says 'this machine pwns noobs'. I say that about my awesomeness.

  • hehe, he said "do do" ... hehe

  • Nooo nothing can kill youtube!!!

  • ha may 3rd is my dads birthday too, cool

  • Hey i was born on the same day as ur day YAY :D

  • 1984

    Just sayin'.

  • Stop using that voice. It makes my ears hurt.

  • 'a finite amount of crap is crap but a infinite amount of crap is hope'

wise words Hank wise words :)

  • It was my gran's birthday too ! she was 90!

  • Hank in the shower ♥

    This is great :D

    Loved your explanation.

  • you look like Dwight Schrute in the thumbnail for this video XD

  • unfortunatly, i am german and not eligible to write to your congress in a meaningful matter.

i would if i could. that is one serious issue.

and - as a European - i have to say this:

    ONLY IN AMERICA !!!11!11!!

    sry

  • "Infinite amounts of crap is hope."

    Genius.

  • sorry but the Bit Torrent bandwidth consumption thing is a myth.

You are perpetuating it here, and actually presenting it as justification for the corporations behaviour - not that this is your intention - but it distorts the picture.

This is about profit and control, no excuses, no explanations necessary; it's a fuelled by capitalist agenda, so spell it as it is, rather than spouting nonsense about attempts to stifle illegality.

  • Comment removed

  • I like your machine that pwns noobs

  • lol "Confusing on my body!" We love you, Hank.

  • wait... hank isn't a hot girl?!?

  • giraffe sex, xbox live, and vlogbrothers... Hmm, great examples :D

  • As far as I know, my provider Bell/Sympatico Canada doesn't do this stuff. I've noticed no change between the speeds of websites...

  • wow. my dad is older than yours and im 11 years younger than you.

  • @suppastar101 Wow, that's how it is for me too!

  • Your dad's birthday is on the same day as my mom's birthday. It's a sign.

  • Well, I do have to add, Net Neutrality was not allowed by the courts, so the FCC is regulating the internet as a utility. It is as if I had a coal burning furnace and the government, who was told they can't make a law against coal furnaces, comes to my home and tells me I have a coal/carbon fee because I'm not using a solar panel. I guess the rule is if it is unconstitutional to make it a law or can't pass the congress, just make a regulation and avoid those annoying checks and ballances.

  • So are you for Net Neutrality? You feel that the government, not the individual user, should be in control of what goes on the internet? With the current system, yes, the business is trying to make a profit, but you can still switch to another outlet. With NN the government controls the internet as a utility. When that happens, if the government thinks you are saying something inappropriate, they will shut you down. Not just porn but political speach.

  • Omg. My dad was 50 on the 24th of April :D

  • i go to open a new tab and my internet connection failed, irony? xD

  • Happy Birthday, Mr. Green! :D

  • hahaha! i was expecting a lesson on not to steal music. i laughed at the video annotation.

  • Over in Australia each individual shower has a limited hot water supply. Bleh.

  • @rachelofpie i know, right, how much does it suck!?

  • What about porn? (I really just wanted to open up a comment with that)

But siriusly. They went for BitTorrent BEFORE porn?! I mean, in the immortal words of Doctor Cox, 'If you took all the porn off the internet, there would only be one site left, and it would be called 'Bring back the porn!'. Surely that's taking bandwidth. And how many people want to see giraffe sex, anyway?

  • @Flangel66 I totally agree. Sure, some people might be pissed off we're taking away the porn but hopw many sites of people f*cking does the internet need?

  • Ehh I think youtubes safe, it's owned by one of the largest corperations in the world and provides around half the profit google has, google isn't just going to let this slide

  • So my shower is my shower but also my internet?

  • you explained this in a great way, i now know why it takes me 45 minutes to log in on twitter. haha thumbs up for mister Green!

  • Downloading a song, movie or eBook has the same practical effect as borrowing it from a friend.

  • great message hank but i wish you wouldn't waste water like that :(

  • Happy Birthday Hank!!!

  • I'd still watch youtube if it was throttled. At mt boyfriend's house, each video took about half an hour to load, so I'd do homework in between :)

  • I didn't know bandwidth was not a renewable resource :O. I've been using it this whole time without knowing.

  • This would have been infinitely more awesome if you had been shirtless, Hank. ;]

    & Happy B-Day, dude!

  • thank you for FINALLY making me understand what the elusive "bandwidth" is. great video! also HAPPY BIRTHDAY :))) DFTBA <3

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY HANK!!!!!!!!!

I'm saying it on this one because I can't say it on your birthday video because it just says error.....so yeah.

    Have a great birthday Hank!!!!!!

And happy belated birthday to Mr.Green :)

    <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Fake and Gay!!!
