this aint punk its the halo benders do everyone a fucking favor stop trying to put everything in a fuckin bracket either you like or not im sick of everyone having a sup pat critisism on fucking youtube
I saw them play this song in a surprise performance--Doug just got up on stage--at a Dub Narcotic Sound System show during CMJ in 1997 or 1998 and it was incredible--small crowd, amazing energy, so much fun. One of the best performances I've been to in my life.
some chick that moved to our town from portland had some hook up with k records, and she was trying real hard to get calvin johnson out to delaware, but instead we got karl blau. not as exciting, but i can always dream :D
Hmm... I took this video and I've been near Calvin in close quarters several times and I've never smelled any horrible B.O. Perhaps you just caught him on a bad day, or maybe your upper lip smells like dead hooker ass...?
@samuelmichaud - to me, a fag looks big, burly and bearded, since I'm one (of both sets of qualifiers). Therefore, the guitar player on the right is a fag, I hope. :) (though I'd be willing to give Calvin honorary membership)
There's something really weird about the way this video is shot right next to Calvin, and Doug is way over there in the background, but Calvin's vocals are practically inaudible compared to Doug's.
you should give the recorded version of this a listen. it sounds a lot different. you might think different about this song. the fact that you can't here calvin gives the song a totally different sound.

1980s Brit indie re hashed by you yanks!!..you lot are always pickin up on stuff too late ...all thier songs sound like someone elses !! ie that "bikini" song is that a Pixies track?? ...try listening to "Ultra Vivid Scenes MERCY SEAT" and "ride CHELSEA GIRL" 10 years before >>.even this songs title is borrowed off "THE SMITHS"
they were American but bombed in the states cos the yanks play it safe and popularise the music fed to them by the American media and financially vested interests ... These american bands owe their survival to a less brainwashed youth culture( inc 4AD)..who freethink and LEAD and not be LED..THANK YOU for making my point for me..SMART ASS ..
Hey I agree with you totally, but the halo benders and built to spill have had no airtime through American media at all. In my eyes they are equally amazing and talented as the pixies or ultra vivid scene. They have even been around since the 80's. It sounds like you refer to UVC and the pixies as British bands. They are not. And i agree, UK music scene > US music scene.
i spent a little time in the US in the 1980s..You could not get hold of or listen to any decent music..yet the Pixies , Harold Budd, UVS,Throwing Muses etc were sell out at clubs in the UK ..i was taken to an indie club in Philly and tortured with Depeche Mode and The Human League..( both uk bands by the way but you are welcome to them) ..listen to Bang Bang Machine "GEEK LOVE" on youtube its an education for you
Although most of the things you say are true, lets not generalize an entire nation by its popular culture eh? Specially since this is definitely not POPULAR american culture and i have never seen any mention of this band in mainstream media. Also, doug was a huge smiths fan and a band he was in before, treepeople, covered "Big mouth strikes again" off "The queen is dead". I dont know how but this must be inspired by the smiths track or something.
Im an Old Man now and very proud of the music that WAS pioneering, inspirational and truly cutting edge..I love America and its people plus as previously stated the US has produced some earth shattering true Indie bands..the Halo Benders sound great BUT i cant help thinking they sound like a musical confection or if you like a RETRO band ...Doug is a sensational musician and not all Americans buy into the popular culture shit .But its FAKE sorry!!
Calvin Johnson formed his first group, Beat Happening, in 1892, four years before the formation of the Pixies, the same year as The Smiths, etc. There is legitimate room for disagreement over the quality and enjoyment value of much current US indie rock, but K Records, which Johnson founded, has been hugely influential since its founding in the early '80s, and produced truly original music. I don't think Kurt Cobain had a K Records logo tattooed on his arm as a fashion statement.
Thats really neat and really early punk cowboy frontier music..although Shakesperes sister was actually Williams own band were he cross dressed and wrote the lyrics whilst taking time off penning Macbeth !
