I am a daughter of a vietman vet, L-Cpl James R. Grandy served 1964-1968 who just this friday March 2 2012 came to me to tell me. That he has a Aortic Anurism. 3 centimeters, It is in the lifeline of his blood flow. The doctors cant operate so now my family and i have accepted that my father at any give second of the day may pass an we cherish it,. Please say prayers for my family in time of our needs . As a military family to another god bless all who has lost loved ones . Danielle Grandy
I am proud to say that am a Vietnam era vet. I was never stationed in-country, but flew C-130s from Clark Field in the Phillipines to Vietnam. I was lucky and came back each time all in one piece. I am glad to say that the people of this great country are finally showing appreciation for the Vietnam vets service. I proudly wear a "US Airforce-Vietnam Vet" embroderied cap and many people have come up to me to thank me for my service. I say "thank you" to those who weren't as lucky as I.
To all the good men and my friends who died in Vietnam. You live on in my memory, but I wish I could have brought you home with me. I will never forget.
I hope y'all don't mind me saying this, my name doesn't matter but what does is whenever I'm in my Jrotc uniform and I see a soldier past or present. I always thank them for what they have done. But the other day, I saw a veteran of Vietnam I came straight to attention and saluted him. He started to cry. It takes a lot for a man to cry. But I was humbled by what he said next, "Son, thank you for reminding me of why I served." I have never seen him again. God bless you soldiers.
@powell356: No...Actually there were 58,212 war dead. God only knows how many more commited suicide when they got home and were disgraced and forgotten. I know cause I was one of the few that got home safe and faced the anti-war thugs. I'm now 72 and suffer from agent orange, hearing loss, lack of self confidence. This country don't give a shit.
@MrDonRailey - Sir, I thank you for your sacrifice and contribution to our freedom. God bless you! What was done to all you soldiers (my TRUE heroes) is inexcusable. -- Brandi Freeman
my eighth grade class took a field trip to washington, D.C. in 2010 and we saw the vietnam wall.every year the eighth grade goes to D.C. my history teacher said that one year, some of the kids didn't know anyone who was killed on the wall. so they just took some paper and lead and started making random rubbings of peoples' names they didn't even know. then an old man with tears in his eyes walked up to them and said, "Thank you for remembering my son."
I appreciate George Jones for his great talents at writing such an amazing song my Father was in Vietnam he came home and we are greatful for that and i would like to thank our soldiers for their bravery to all that we have lost and to those who survive may your hearts be in the memory of us all
a good tribute to our fallen soldiers that died or are still missing. my dad, grampa, great uncle, and right now my uncle is surving under that old flag now. so to all you soldiers out thear come home safly.we honer you
Yes! there are to many names on he wall, far to many, but to those of us who came back each one of the names is a hero to us. I have to many friends names on that wall, but I know they will be waiting for me when I die and I will be with them and the rest of my family and friends in heven!
I rejoice in the praise and respect we give today's Veterans. I didn't get that back in '69 when I got home, but it's good to see folks have come to realize the sacrifice our warriors have been willing to give to our country. God bless America - and I thank Mr. Jones for recording this song.
From a fellow vet: Thank you Vietnam men and hold your heads high because you fought for those oppressed and history will remember your blood sweat and tears.
God, I love George Jones. It's hard to sing along with him, because his songs make you cry. My dad saw him in person before he got famous, when he was playing bars and clubs in Beaumont, Texas (my hometown). He was from there. So, I grew up on his music and we went to Jones Country a couple of times when I was little. He is great. He has a great biography too.
@JoLeana76 .... Wow !! ...You're lucky to have been so close to to George . I envy your dad having heard him live in his eary days. ...Thanks for your comment !!
Damn, George Jones can make ya wanna break down and cry, if this shit keeps up there is going to be another wall with 50,000 names...1.5 million Iraqi deaths since the beginning of the war and and tens of thousands of our own killed and over a hundred thousand wounded.
If you dislike this then I suggest you pack your shit and get the hell out of the country!! You have no respect for our troops then you disrespect their families and everyone else that are thankful for the sacrifices made even if it did include your sorry ass. Until you're there and lived it you have no right to open your mouth and criticise any past, present or future soldiers.
When I stood in front of the wall, I saw close friends and relatives names there. I saw names of friends that were killed in firefights not ten feet from where I was. Until you feel like you wish you could remove your buttons just to get a little closer to the ground, you know nothing of what this means.
I can't help but wonder why God spared me but every time I stand in the pulpit and tell of His love, I know there was a reason. God rest the souls of these men and women.
@Jesus12345301 George Jones served in the Marines (I think it was Marines). I agree with you about Jone's ability to sing ANYthing with the feelings that match the song. He's absolutely the best there ever has been.
How in the hell could there be 3 dislikes on this song. My dad was a soldier that fought hard for this country, just to come home and people spit on him. Lets get real people it wasn't their fault they had to go to war. No matter where I'm at I always thank my dad for giving us freedom as well as other soldiers still keeping us safe. Remember all gave some and some gave all.
@dallasdan26 Not saying they are right, but if people in your country spat at your Dad, do you really need to ask why nameless people on the internet disliked this song?
@rayve330 Can you read? I didn't say anything of the sort. Thankfully I'm in the birthplace of your tongue anyway, so your reactionary, semi-literate response is meaningless anyway.
I lost a brother in Vietnam, as did many other families...while the war seemed to be a waste...the services did what they thought was right and were protecting our rights for freedom..George Jones...this is a great song
George Jones alway the ability to sing with the feelings necessary for the song. He may not or have not been in the arms forces but he knows only say the words but to express the feelings of others about war or any other subjects matters
id like to dedicate this song to a man i knew who was a soldier on the frontline in vietnam he was a good man generous person he had seen some bad things he had been shot at he passed on two weeks ago so i got to thank him for his service before he passed on something that means alot to me.
hiya mate, where i live we are used to a sacrafice like these men i live in northern ireland, ive seen some serious violence here in the past at the the hieght of the troubles and lost a few mates but thats what we are here for.
@paratrooper321fa I often do this song on Karoake nights because a childhood friend Sgt. Clyde "Coppy" Ward's name is on that wall. Unfortunately not many of the Viet Nam Vets frequent the clubs where I sing. Usually a younger bunch shooting pool while the singers perform......but I still do it in tribute.
I would like to dedicate this video to my husband's uncle Steven McCartney who was a Vietnam Vet that fought in the Central Highlands of Vietnam Campaign. He received a Purple Heart and 3 other medals. He suffered from cancer and other illnesses for many years. He finally succumbed to his illlnesses and passed away on April 9, 2011. He was the most giving and forgiving man I have ever known. With a BIG heart and generousity to match!
While listening to this great tribute to the brave men and women, even those not listed on the wall, that died for what they believed in, I couldn't help noticing there were two IDIOTS that disliked it. I think it's a wonderful song done by an amazing artist. What is there to dislike? I'm curious if the two who disliked it would care to elaborate or be so brave as to say who they are and what foreign country they're from.
you are now doubting the patriotism of your present president..! whose land is it anyway? The red indians'! where did you white guys come from...? Go back guys. be patriotic in your own coutries. pakistan and Saudi are the two countries that breed terrorists and yet iraq, afgan, libya... are the countries bleeding. Y? cuz ur frmr prez has links with the rulers and business of the two dangerous countries!!!
Poor soldiers are dying for some american oil company!!!!
Thank you all for the nice comments, about the song and the price paid. To everyone and especially Nam vets; go to Rolling Thunder if possible. I finally went to the Wall when in DC with my wife Oct 2009. I went to Rolling Thunder 2010. There was some healing riding thru DC with the streets lined with people and the thousands and thousands of bikes. 178ASHC ChuLai VietNam 69
@ikiedoodledo my uncle never come home from dang ding i think thats where he was killed on june 19th 1968 he was a USMC AND WAS ONLY 21 YEARS OLD i thank your family for there service GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
I remember going to the Wall and seeing all those names. My Mama and Daddy were looking for an old mate of my Mamas. To tell you the truth I did not know what it was, I knew it was a wall that was all. I asked my Daddy who told me what it was. All I said was "Oh". I saw crust old teddy bears from rain and wilted flowers and faded photos. I saw people looking for names of mates they had. SoI went plucked a few dandelions and scattered them the length of the wall.
I've heard lot's of heart wrenching country songs since I've been a kid but i have to rate this as Number One. And nobody, not even Willie and Merle, could do it better than George.
This has been a favorite of mine for a long time. This is one that I liked the tune and didn't really listen to the words for a long time. So I had no idea what it was really about. Duh!
This song made me start crying 36 SECONDS into it. My cousin's name, JOHN ORA JONES, JR, is one of those names on the Wall (but, technically, there are 52,000+ listed on it). Anyway, I will ALWAYS be proud of our VietNam vets--who did not get the recognition they deserved when they came home. God Bless You All.
Why keep building walls? I love this song, and I understand the importance of every name on that wall, but still theres more walls beeing built!
U.S. Military Deaths (Afghanistan) 1286 .U.S. Military Wounded (Afghanistan) 7266 .U.S. Military Deaths (Iraq) 4427 .U.S. Military Wounded (Iraq) 32900
I'm not smart enough to have a solution to any problem causing a war, but I'm certain of it not beeing the right answer!
I have an uncle who was lucky enough to come back, but so many more didn't. I bend my head in silent reverence to those who gave all and even more than all. To the KIAs and MIAs of Vietnam and every other war: We love you, we miss you, we are so proud of you.
There were alot of critics of the design of the memorial when the blueprint plans came out. When the wall was finished, the critics were silenced. It was more beautiful than anyone ever imagined it would be.
i love geroge jones hes my all time country 1# singer and every word of his songs have meaning to them god bless american to all the men and woman fighting for our countrys and in the wars
I served over there up in Highlands, '69-'70. Thanks to all for the appreciation - wish we'd seen it upon our return. I made my pilgrimage to The Wall in '05 - found my uncle's name from '65, and the names of my buddies who didn't make it back. That visit was powerful medicine, like a burden had been lifted. The expressions on the faces of the 3 statues is spellbinding, they are looking right at The Wall with looks of bewilderment and awe. Thanks George, for doing this great song.
you see alot of people wearing sports stars jerseys thinking of them as heros.....theres 58,195 right there on that wall.......thank you to all veterans everyone of YOU are MY HEROS
I have sacrificed little compared to "my" WW II/Korea/Vietnam bretheren ( I say that loosely becacuse they are a class amongst themselves; for GOOD REASON. I am an OEF and OIF vet although I do not think myself as such. This song is as real as it was/is for me when I went to Arlington this past year. (2010). I couldn't stand in the Atrium with my new wife at the time because it was too emotional for me. I just couldn't.
I remember the first time I visited the wall. I was with my dad; he served in Vietnam. When he found his friend's name there, he just broke down and cried. It was one of the most emotional moments of my life; before that moment I had never seen my father cry.
@mandymkeller i remember the frist time i visited the wall.it renderd me speechless and in tears.there are so many that forget, that without the united states military, there would be no united states.i am glad your dad made it home,i know he left a part of him there.i know you are proud of him.i dont know him and i am proud of him....
@wrightfield Thank you Sir or Mam, ALL vets like to hear that what we did is appreciated. I was in Desert Storm. My Dad was in Vietnam. Grandpa's WWII. Thank you once again.
@50poiuyt Vietnam Of the South and its innocent democratic citizens who had been invaded in its houses for murderous Communists of the Vietnam of the North. They had been vietcongs murderous that they had killed innocents in the Vietnam of the South
50POIUYT IS VIETCONG CRIMINAL WAR
50POIUYT IS COMUNIST KILLED INNOCENTS IN THE VIETNAM OF THE SOUTH - DEMOCRACY FOR VIETNAM - FREEDOM VIETNAM
Whoever doesn't think this song is powerful and touches so many people - shame on you. My husband served in Vietnam, didn't die, but lost a lot of his friends. I'm so proud of him and all others who served in Vietnam.
i was in special forces and so was my dad i enjoy listening to this because from the stories he tells me i wasnt shit in anybodies backyard although it was a different time i think all the men who served in the nam are badass and although i did six tours overseas i still think he had it worse than me. love you daddy.
You know with me being a veteran an all i think it is funny how peeps cans sit here an voice there opinions as far as not thinking anyone should die in war an we shouldnt be over there doing what we do. But they seem to forget if it wasn't for them going doing what we have to do even at the cost of the great sacrifice they couldnt do what they are doing. I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN UNIFORM I AM WITH YOU 100%. As for the rest of you step up or shut up.
well I suggest that you do something about it because you can sit there and make these comments thanks to (as you put it ) idiots like me who are willing to stand post for people like you to have the freedom to make these comments and feel safer in your bed at night, and I will remind you that while you read this another UK or US soldier has just been injured or lost their life somewhere in the world.
I want to say thank you to all who have served to keep this country free. My gratitude is hard to put into words because Freedom Isn't Free. The great price has been paid and is still being paid by our brave soldiers. White, Black, Indian, Asian, Hispanic......All have fought and died to keep our country free. God Bless America
You would think as two great nations we would learn lessons you have vietnam we have ireland and now we have iraq and afganistan but only US and UK forces step up to the mark in hellmand out of all nato countries so to all other nato countries you should thank all US and UK forces and we will say SHAME ON YOU !!!.
1st Bn The Gordon Highlanders, 51st Highland Division
I'm a combat vet from operation Desert Storm...so I guess what I'm trying to say is "a Soldier From a Different Era"....but all Brothers & sisters! Thank-You George for your dedication to those of us who gave it our all!!
Far all yall Service members thanks for all that you do....And a heart felt Semper Fi to all by buddies and marines of the past that have walked away from combat to see another day...or payed the ultimate sacrifice....Thank-you especially all my 0311's out there......semper fi....and remember millitary wives they also serve like trayw03 im sure her husband is very happy to have a supportive wife as I am happy also.......Semper Fi
@50poiuyt FOR VC CRIMINAL WAR 50POIUYT: Communist criminal, defends the communist military dictatorship of the Vietnam. Either man in the life and goes to defend the human rights and the democracy in the Vietnam. You and Pol Pot of Cambodia are murderous cowards, who live in the luxury and the people of the Vietnam lives in the Misery and the dictatorship.
I was a newsman during the war, not in country. Nonetheless, I saw how things were, and too much of the time, how the lies were used to injure our own boys.
So, thank you for your service, thank you for enduring, and becoming who each of you became.
The tears are for your brothers who were murdered, for your brothers who never walked, again, never saw their families, or another sunrise. And, for your sons who are serving today, with honor, making you proud.
What a beautiful tribute to all the veterans who fought for our freedom. George is the best country singer of all time and a perfect choice to sing this wonderful song.

There were alot of critics of the design of the memorial when the blueprint plans came out. When the wall was finished, the critics were silenced. It was more beautiful than anyone ever imagined it would be.
