Let's repeat for the mentally-challenged non-breast-fed adults out there. According to this show the rest of the world breast feeds more than America. ANNND, more breast feeding = higher IQ's. Then how come the rest of the world doesn't enjoy a higher standard of living? And has less access to technology? I've traveled quite a bit and I can tell you that the rest of the world wants to live in LOW IQ America. The Dr.s = politically correct claptrap
@outlaw17ster Up to age 7 is mentioned (not older) b/c it's not easy to BF past that age due to the new molars erupting around that age. Natural age to wean BY 7 or whenever the child chooses to stop if prior.
Dr. Lisa is a joke. She has NO idea what she's talking about. Shame on her for this, and other garbage she's said. She shouldn't be on this show...There needs to be more information out there about how important breastfeeding is. For both mother and child.
"As an OB I have to take a stance...." blah blah blah... shut up! You don't have to advise the mothers they need to make their own choice I am brestfeeding my 2 month old and I personally don't wish to go for longer than a year but I have no problem with women who breastfeed into their toddler years. And I am tired of the ignorance when it comes tobreastfeeding. My daughter is 2 months and people are already asking when I am going to stop. SHUT UP and let me feed my baby what she needs.
Of course it's the female doctor that is against it. And she bases this opinion on nothing! No science, and she's a doctor! My goodness. I have actually received more support and kindness from my male colleagues around pumping at work than females. Part of this is because, as an engineer, I work with mostly men. But I think it is also because of our screwed up Western views and maybe a little bit some moms' guilt because they were pressured to wean to soon.
OBs don't know SHIT about breastfeeding! It's not part of their curriculum in their medical training. They might get a lil bit of info on it but it's not greatly emphasized, that is why so many women choose NOT to BF b/c their doctors (OBs) are numb nuts like this hoe!
breast feeding I think is normal but way back when I was in 5th grade there was a child in my class that still breast fed and she bragged about it a lot and was very abnormal she always talked about her moms breasts and she assaulted another classmate by grabbing her breasts a ten year old breast feeding is obviously far to old so when do we stop them if they dont want to themselves I dont have a problem with a four year old or less breast feeding its healthy
@agetlostgirl i agree. breastfeeding a child into the double digits is veering off into strange and disturbing territory, i would want to wean a child before they were school age but to me 4 and 5 years old is perfectly normal.
@eringirlboygirl you'll notice a lot of these "doctors" are just tv personalities and will say anything they are paid. Thats why "doctors" are always on pushing flu vaccines and stuff. they are making money for the medical industry who wouldnt be getting as rich if women stayed home to give birth (instead of getting a surgery and infection from it at the hospital like MRSA) and breastfed because then their children wouldnt get sick as much either

@eringirlboygirl of course she does! she's an OB! being and OB/GYN isn't about what's best for the mother or her child. it's about what's most convenient to the OB. inducing labor and performing c-sections are convenient for the doctor as well as a major cash cow so they will advocate for their own interests first and foremost. which is why so many women are choosing to birth at home.
I was nursed for almost six years until I decided I no longer needed to nurse. I have also had many eye problems resulting in surgery, nursing after the operation sped recovery (breastmilk is a 'clear liquid') to nearly half of what was expected. I get sick less then my peers and when I do I recover sooner. breastfed is bestfed.
@xandriathegreat i think it's incredible and inspiring that you extended breastfeeding! that's so great. but i oppose this "breast is best" idiom because it makes it seem like it's merely the best option of an array of "acceptable" options. which is untrue. breast milk is the only acceptable option and everything else is practically garbage.
What exactly is Dr. Lisa "advising her mothers" on???? She sounds uneducated and it is dangerous to have such a women advising new mothers... she needs to be taken off this show!
mothers should breastfeed for as long as she and the child mutually desire. it isn't psychologically or physically harmful. this anti-nursing bullshit needs to stop. im furious at the antagonistic dr lisa. she's encouraging and reaffirming stereotypes. total bitch.
Dr. Lisa - I love this show but shame on you for not knowing the benefits of breastfeeding until toddler-hood. I did it with my last child and the benefits were amazing. She was never sick with any kind of stomach illnesses, she is very intelligent, confident and it took the excess weight off me! It's a wonderful bond and between mom and child and nobody in this "society" that we live in should judge. It's a woman's personal decision!!!!
Dr. Lisa needs to give up her practice as an OB doctor. If she doesnt know basic things such as stats that breast feeding is best 2 years or longer if the mother and baby want to continue she needs to go back to school or do some research in her field! She blurts out her opinion instead of giving resources answers and I feel that doctors like her prevent our country from having great birth and breastfeeding experiences and thoughts.
Dr. Lisa is some Doctor.I mean c'mon the L.C. ...explains it perfectly. & why wouldnt you want to give your child the best? I just cant believe how idiotic some people really are and shes educated! Its our right as women and Mothers & its our duty to do everything we can for our child and if i know my son will benefit from some extended breastfeeding then thats what we will do! Im a VERY PROUD mother of an 11 mo old..who is still happily breastfeeding and we will go until he is ready to STOP!
Dr Lisa is a complete idiot. i am so glad to see two wonderful lactation consultants, as well as the pediatrician promoting human milk for human children. Dr Lisa should be kicked off.
Dr. Lisa should do her research before jumping in to "take a stand". Had she read any of the current research available to her, she might have understood that the age span presented is relative to the child in question- if she felt pressured to encourage her child to "separate" too soon, she shouldn't just pass that pressure on to other well-meaning mothers. She owes her patients objective information based on facts, and she apparently needs to get her facts straight!
@lmmerwin I couldn't have said it better myself! :] That whole thing was more like a personal opinion, rather than medical facts. She has no real base for any of what she said. "take a stand" my ass.
I just loved this piece and SO glad that Dr. Lisa was proven other wise (I don't like her and this just extended my dislike for her). I wish they would have used the term full term nursing, instead of extended nursing, becasue the lengths of nursing they are talking about are natural. Way to go Dr. Sears, I wish you lived in my area so my kids could see you!
ok, while 7 may be a little on the old side, I think that the U.S. is shockingly behind the rest of the world in terms of nursing children. Dr. Lisa needs to get over her own hang-ups and prejudices. Nursing is NOT a sexual act, nor are children held back from independence by extended nursing. Many cultures pomote this. What's wrong with us? As a culture the U.S. is entirely too sexualized, so even a loving, normal, nurturing act has become perceived as odd or somehow perverted. Sad.
She is horrible, Dr. Lisa is terrible for telling mothers to stop

there is nothing wrong with breastfeeding into preschool age, now breastfeeding over the age of 8 is just weird to me personally...

Does she get her period? Because i've heard that you don't get your period when you breastfeed. :?

@RRBvampgrl periods often return later b/c of b-f-ing. It does NOT stop it indefinitely.

I stopped watching The Doctors solely because of Dr Lisa.
She recommends circumcision because it "looks pretty".
She recommends women to shave their pubic hair, even though that increases your risk of infections (especially when pregnant).
She makes me sick, this makes me mad.

How can you produce milk for 7 years?
july191955 1 year ago
@july191955 As long as someone(child) or something(pump) is pulling milk from the breast, a women will continue to produce milk.
