What i get from it I THINK this is just my opinion i think she is implying "heroes and theives at my door i cant seem to figure it out anymore" to me she is saying there are 2 kinds of people and having somany relationships and having her heart broken she cant tell if she can trust people anymore then she finds that one person. That is what i get out of it.

Right after this song came out, I fell in love with it, and latched onto every word. I immediately went to the piano and figured it out, and it's one of the songs thathas always held personal meaning for me. It's such a genuine, "real" sort of song, and the confusing, happy, mixed emotions portrayed I really relate to. Probably my favorite Vanessa Carlton ever with "Home" as a close second.

To me its a love song, where she states she doesnt know who loves her for who she really is (Heroes) OR who loves her because they Want Something From Her (Thieves), and when she finally 'figures it out' that her 'darling' is actually a 'hero', she doesnt have him anymore. thats the chorus.

The rest is about her progressing through her understanding of 'Heroes' and 'Thieves'. And i guess,she also says, when she figures all of this out she will be coming back to him .

Well, it can be pretty much anything. It could be what IkariKumori said.

In my opinion, "Darling" is obviously a loved one. Heroes and Thieves could be a metaphor for a decision that has to be made, and "At my door" probably means she has to make it pretty quick.

In general, it's probably about an ultimatum, thats extremely hard to pick, but has to be.

It's not that she's "better" than them, just more 'authentic' and creative. Unfortunately, it seems that her latest pieces appeal to a smaller crowd compared to miley cyrus, jobros, demi lovato, rihanna, etc. But she seems happy with her music, and that's all that matters.
