I agree with an earlier poster concerning Castle's movie gimmicks. Mr.Sardonicus was one of a number of Castle films which were well done and scary in their own right and needed no carnival tricks to boost ticket sales. This one really scared the poop out of me when I was a kid!
I hate horror movies. When I watched this movie, at first I thought, this movie is so old that it won't scare me. But when that horrible smile appeared I couldn't watch the screen. It's damn scary. This movie is like way of saying: "Don't mess with old horror movies"
I saw these movies on tv as an 8yo kid along with 'Hands of Orlac' , 'The Tingler' and other crazy movies. Thank God for Youtube as they were seldom if ever repeated in the UK. I'm gonna sit down and get a big dose of them now!
I remember too how creepy it was, and don't remember the "poll". I saw it about the same time and same age as Axecalibore. It does look like a silly gimmick - don't make me work while I'm watching a movie, man!
I have been trying to find the movie where a man looks inside a dug up coffin to reveal a corpse, and shocks the man so much, his face takes on the same grimmace/smile as the corpse.
Sure it was in colour, but it's been 30 plus years since I saw it on tv.
Yeah, the "power" bit is a lie. They never shot a "merciful" ending. The only ending to the movie was the "punishment" ending. The whole "power to choose" thing is a hoax. Got that off of wikipedia.
Saw it on TV when I was 13. Scared the bajeebies out of me! You can combine all the spooky movies out there... & they won't have the effect this movie had on me. Omg, I have got to get a copy... LOL!

This film gave me nightmares! I don't remember a poll, since I probably saw this a couple of years after the initial release as part of a double-feature.
I haven't seen it in years, but I'll bet it would still freak me out!
Because director Alfred Hitchcock was famous for his profile and famously showed it at the beginning and end of the credits for his hit television series. Castle dealt his whole life with quite a case of "Hitchcock envy."
I'm thinking of buyng this - not sure yet. Anyway, I'm a big William Castle fan and I need a little help - one of his first films was called "Macabre" in 1958 and I can't find a VHS tape of it anywhere! Does anyone know where I could get a copy??
The ironic thing is, Sardonicus had such a good story and cast that it didn't need any of the usual silly William Castle gimmicks at all, and would have worked straight as a regular movie. The dopey Punishment Poll gimmick only wasted time and got in the way. I saw the movie when I was 12, and I thought so then.

Castle at the beginning staged his profile shot to look just like FDR. Wonder why...
