Hey bigguyosu, I was the lucky dude who won Mazeppa's Wolfman painting in 1970! I guess you'd say I was one of the "zeros" and "shut-ins" who enjoyed about every one of Gailard's shows between 1970 to 1973 on both KOTV and KTUL. He was a pioneer of improv comedy when only Jonathan Winters was his equal. Loved the Unfilmy Can Festival on KAKC, too. Here's to Hoss Chopright, Dr. Menlo Park and Count Backowarz and the rest! Saturday nights have not been the same since.
Thank you, Randy! What a great song for listening to and remembering some great Saturday nights from my home in Bartlesville. I still have my 7up Gizly-Blinker (doesn't work) and my Der Wienerschnitzel card. I have no idea why. I remember sending in dozens of entries to win Gailard's painting of the Wolfman, but alas with no luck. I have ordered the Mazeppa videos and showed them to friends with mixed results. No they weren't the SNL originals, but they were 6 years earlier. LawZee!
Randy, I ordered Mazeppa Volume 4 for my own Christmas Present and I think it is my favorite... there are some great skits on the others, but this one had lots of stuff I hadn't seen before. I fell asleep some night tho...
I bought a broadcast tape at an estate sale in Norman labeled Mazeppa. After getting it converted to a DVD I had 30 minutes of Mazeppa craziness from those days. All of course you can purchase from Gailard today. Great stuff.
Thanks so much Sandstorm88 for your song. It brought a nostalgic tear to my eye! My dad and I ran SEVCO on South Peoria, and we had several commercials on Uncanny Film Festival. Anyone want to see some commercials from the original wild and crazy guy?(Joe Pierre, Mr. SEVCO)
Sandstorm88, thanks man. Born and visited grandparents in Tulsa back then. Stayed up for the horror/sci-fi movies and got WAY MORE than we expected! Probably scared us for life! Great song, vocals and guitar! Thanks again!
I am 25 and grew up in Tulsa. My parents introduced me to Mazeppa through the VHS compilations released in the early 90's. I am totally a fan! Coach Chuck, Teddy Jack Eddy, Sherman Oaks, Benny the Crusher, I love it all. Just thought I'd drop you a line and let you know I understand why this show was so special to you guys growing up in the 70's. Tulsa forever!
But who remembers the UNFILMY Can Festival that Mazeppa and Teddy Jack Eddy did on the radio at KAKC's Tradewinds West studios? I was a local news reporter (known as Kathy Chronister, KAKC Hotline News) and while I would be there late recording my overnight news, would be called on to occasionally run next door to let out a blood curdling scream or wild howl of laughter... real 1970s special FX!!
Great stuff - all of us from Green Country loved The Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting and who could forget the preceeding c/w music show presented by Horn Brothers Furniture.!!!
'75 Will Rogers; I remember Ms. Otto the French teacher telling us about Gailord's antics going down staircases. Did he do anything creative with David Gates of Bread? I thought I had finally become a bona fide teenager with privileges when I got to stay up and watch those "spooky" movies. Gailord you are loved by many.
Sapulpa '74 myself. When I try to explain to my kids, in their twenties, about Mazeppa they look at me like I'm nuts. What a great show, never missed a Saturday night. Do you remember "Fantastic Theater" from the 60s on Saturday night? My sis and I watched those really bad B horror movies with our mom. Sigh....sometimes I really miss those times.
I still have my Mazeppa's 7UP Uncola Underground Card! Thanks for bringing back the memories of "Toby the Toe-Headed Boy" bit ("My Grandma said, Boy you've grown a foot!") Benny the Crusher and Teddy Jack dancing to "These boots are made for walkin" The early 70's was a great time to grow up in T-Town in GREEN COUNTRY!
This is awesome, great job! Tenacious D would be proud, as would Mazeppa himself I presume. I do recommend visiting Mazeppa dot come and buying the DVD's there. They don't have all the bits, but a lot of the great ones.
I found Gailord Sartain's website with the Mazeppa tapes/dvd's. If anyone wants a link to his site to buy them send me a message & I'll send you the link..
Thanks Starqz. I have already been there but to anyone else be sure to check out the Mazeppa website. Dvd's are avaliable. The videos that are available are still as funny as ever!!!!
She said that Gailard Sartain was marketing a few of these tapes he still has through his website a few years back. Unfortunately many of them were lost though; they were either destroyed or the station didn't bother to save them according to her.
I read where Gailard said at the time they were just doing the show week to week. They had no idea if they would even be on next week. They sure didn't think think there would be interest in preserving the episodes. They would use some of the same tape over and over. So there are some episodes that got erased right after airing. That is too bad because some of that stuff is just in my memory. And my memory ain't as good as it used to be.
Those were the days!! We'd pile in and ride 2 hrs west to Van Buren to stay with friends and watch the best late night improv ever. If this show had happened in NYC, The Great Mazeppa would now be a household name. There was Mazeppa and several years later there was Sat Night Live. And the operating budget, my goodness, children.
Glad to see the later high chef of Eggs Erroneous singing about those great days.
Thanks, GS!! Plenty of folks would like to go there again with you.

It was on Channel 6, according to my mom.
