The Beach Boys were almost in legal dispute over their Surfing USA as it almost closely follow the tune of Sweet Little Sixteen.It was settled later when Chuck Berry was credited as the co writer.
one of the greatest guitar solos of all time is in this song. There's a really good recording of the lads rocking this one on their 'Live at the BBC' album
I love this - it has a raw, fun, and almost punk-like energy to it which sad to say is actually missing from any later recordings.
I met a guy from Liverpool who says he regularly saw The Beatles at The Cavern. He swore blind that all of their best performances were never captured after they were tidied up and made acceptableI didn:t really believe him as I thought he was jealous to lose hte Beatles to the rest of the world - but hearing this for the first time I wonder if he was actually right!
I'd rather say that Surfin U.S.A. by The Beach Boys sounds almost like Sweet Little Sixteen. Chuck Berry released this song in 1958 while Surfin U.S.A. came out by 1963.
Excellent song !! Thanks for posting !!

@setefu John Lennon would have agreed and did so in several interviews.

I find it incredible that there isn't a decent live album by the Beatles.

@young5ever Not really - to record anything at their concerts with 1965 technology was pretty hopeless. All you could hear was the screaming girls.

Lennon sounds so damn wicked in this.

@marvy1118 I love the little laugh John does when he sings "tight dresses and lipstick." John is a balls to the wall rocker, no doubt.

Yeah, Chuck Berry has a writing credit for Surfin USA because the BBs ripped him off, genius though Brian Wilson was...

Should say is, I suppose!

The Beach Boys were great, but they shouldn`t have taken the tune...

@Beatlegirl4eva
Every rock n roll artists rips off another rock n roll artist.
Most composers rip off other composers.
But the Beach Boys DID NOT rip off Chuck Berry on this one.
"written by Brian Wilson for The Beach Boys, set to the melody from Chuck Berry's Sweet Little Sixteen. Berry has sole credit for composing the song."
