Samuel Adams is not the strongest beer at 17% ABV. I've personally had a 20% ABV beer--Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA . . look it up. Pretty sure there are some that top that as well...

My guess would be they mean beer without added alcohol. At a certain point the alcohol kills the yeast making the alcohol so there is an upper limit on alcohol content if you don't add any. Just a guess. :)

No. Samuel Adams with their champagne yeast actually achieved over 20% with their Utopias. There's another method called the Eisbock method where the beer is made by freeze distilling a doppelbock and removing the ice to concentrate the flavor and alcohol content, so the alcohol doesn't destroy the yeast. There's a company called BrewDog that freeze distilled a 10% ale, gradually removing the ice until the beer reached 32% abv. You can go even higher, but the balance goes out the window.

Cool, I didn't know that. The thing is, by freezing and removing ice, you are still artifically raising the ETOH content but fair enough, they are not adding ETOH.
