What can I say... The movie moved(haha) me... Every time I remembered a gut punching moment from the film I felt like a pressure was on me... Last time I felt that way was when my girlfriend died in a car crash so this film helped me become aware of that dreadful feeling either way I wish the best for the family
Went to read a brief outline of this documentary and the genius writer spoiled it in the first line. Still, I'm going to watch it as it looks very emotionally compelling
The documentary itself is fairly amateurish (though way better than most stuff, just has some amateur mistakes), but the subject matter is so powerful it completely washes away ANY errors. No other documentary has ran me through the spectrum of emotion, from anger to sorrow and heart warming joy that this movie has done. A compelling story and you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't see it immediately.
@Kari2025 Dude, delete this. I understand your sentiments, but this film is such a moving experience that you're depriving people of the right to be moved in an even stronger way. Not a lot of people know this story. Don't ruin it for them.
I can't think out of all the documentaries I have watched that one has ever left such an impression on me like this one has. Keene is by far a talented filmaker and told the Bagby's story in such a way that it will change people for the better. I think about this film often and it encourages me to help victims and their families.
I just watched this documentary and i was in total shock the a total miscarriage of justise on the Canadian Goverments part I am from Canada. So glad that Mr and Mrs Bagby and the film maker bought this to the public.
very well made documentary, but its hard to watch....its incredibly sad and unfair what happens to the people involved, but things like this do happen so its good to watch and get that perspective
This is my favorite movie. I could watch it over and over and over again, it was so great. It didn't even feel like a documentary, because you never imagine things like this to happen, you know? It was like watching fiction, but you know what they say. Truth is stranger than fiction.
As terrifying as Dear Zachary was, it was even more so fulfilling. Not numbing, or scary, really. Just... very satisfying. Like a well-written book with a good ending.
If you're starting to watch this trailer, turn it off right now and just go watch the movie. There's no question of whether or not you should watch this. Also, I feel it will probably be better for you to go into the movie knowing nothing about it.
@btbrotherton i was watching tv, one day. i was watching msnbc lock up, then this movie came on. at first i was about to change the channel but i couldnt find the remote. so i said "fuck it, i'll watch it." so i had no idea what this movie was about. you're right, if you're starting to watch this trailer, STOP WATCHING and watch the movie. trust me. In my whole life I've never seen a movie that made me feel the way this movie made me feel. and i guarantee u will cry like a little girl at the end
How could an entire medical school staff, interacting with her on a daily basis, fail to recognize severe Borderline Personality Disorder? Or was it recognized, and determined to be treatable with anti-anxiety medications? This could have been prevented, if her obvious symptoms been addressed properly while she was in medical school, long before the murder.
After watching this it just makes me realize how shitty our (Canada) justice system is. My best friends brother was brutally attacked 3 years ago and almost died. Guy only got 2 years.
AMAZING, the sort of shit real criminals get away with - and how the so-called "legal system" just facilitates the whole goddamned mess.
And yet, if a regular person jaywalks - FINE! CITATION right away! Step out of line at at an OWS protest - BEATEN BY COPS! JAIL, right away! Possession of pot - JAIL! Right away! COURT DATE, right away! NO chance to high-tail it to another country, where you'll be protected!
@DarknessUnresolved I don't think this case exemplifies the justice system. It does bring out some of the problems with extradition laws. Canada is particularly stingy about extraditing its citizens especially in cases of murder like this where they know the death penalty will be on the table. They will often use this as leverage to get such penalties removed. Also it was evident that the Canadian justice was trying to make some sort of point by letting her go free.
and just a little tip people; if you ever meet a new girlfriend or boyfriend and possibly thinking about going further in your relationship, consider what your family members and friends think about it. if a majority of your family and friends think he/she is more off than normal or have some weird personality, be cautious as these might be red flags of mental illness and can possibly lead to heartache down the road.
i hate that cunt whore bitch. the legal system is just as bad. who cares if the crime was specific in nature; david was right in how illogical the court's rationale on letting her out. anyone can acquire hatred towards somebody so how can they say she isn't a danger to the general public? a person who has killed once is statistically more likely to kill again than someone who hasn't. not only that, her story was inconsistent and andrew's friends knew she wasn't right in the head. red flag!

This is a mixture of system failure. Both canada and the United states should have come to the table. I'm the type of person who doesnt cry during movies i dont know why maybe because I know that the whole thing is not real and just acting but when I saw this documentary I cried because I kew that the pain that Andrew's parents felt was real, this movie made me a better person it made me appreciate what i have which are my parents, not a day goes by when I dont think about this documentary and how life changing it is
I have never been this profoundly disturbed by a film. Ever. Truly, there have been few events in my own life that have been as unsettling as watching this film.
Just watched this movie. Holy shit... holy fucking shit. Did you notice the first thing the Judge noted was that she was a doctor, like she was part of an elite club or since she was a doctor she was intelligent enough to stay out of trouble and was no risk. Completely discounting the entire situation. This movie moved me on a molecular level. I will hug my daughter a little tighter from now on.
I'm... I'm just completely numb. Having watched this documentary less than an hour ago, I can safely say that I have experienced every emotion on the human scale. And now I feel like I can't feel anything anymore. It was beautiful, moving, warm, infuriating, everything. It was perfect, devastatingly perfect, but it's left me numb.
@coffeetea720 I think this movie is truly exceptional because it involves the viewer in the same emotions that the people filmed felt--love, hatred, rage, grief. I think it was the real experience of all these feelings that made me feel numb afterward too. No film/documentary has ever done that before or since. It hits you on a visceral level.
This is the most devastating movie I have ever seen. When it got to the part where Zachary was murdered, I broke down crying. No movie has ever made me feel the way this film did.
This is really an amazing documentary. Anyone who hasn't seen it, should. It's so so moving, and it truly makes you think about life and the people in yours.
I am so sorry for all of the friends and family who lost not one but two amazing men. And I'm sorry for the children of Shirley; everyone deserves a loving mother, and it's not fair that you didn't have that.
I occasionally shed a few tears during sad movies like the notebook, but this was the first time a movie has actually made me start bawling like a little girl
This is an infuriating, yet well-made movie, created by the murder victim's childhood friend, who happened to be a film maker. Watching this story will ignite emotions which you have seldom or never felt before for someone you've never met. When you watch this movie, have tissues and uninterrupted time which you can devote for the sake of explicitly understanding. ALL justice systems need an overhaul from the perspective of the victim's families when it's time for sentencing.
I'm posting this EVERYWHERE!!! FUCK CANDA! I don't usually use foul language to express myself but THIS IS DISGUSTING! I have HAD IT WITH OTHER COUNTRIES PUNISHING INDIVIDUALS, HUMAN BEINGS, BECAUSE THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH AMERICA! THIS IS WHY AMERICA IS THE GREATEST COUNTY ON EARTH!!! We don't sacrifice humans TO WIN A FUCKING PISSING CONTEST! And for those of you who are going to say "yes we do!!!" ..Our justice system here in the USA may not be perfect...but we don't use it to PUNISH OTHERS!
@13durd sounds like you have a very nuanced and thought through opinion. Small piece of advice though, using capitals doesn't make you more right......
The Canadian justice system should all be punished to shit. Credit to all the people who gave up their time and money to create this masterpiece that celebrates the life of an amazing man, and an extraordinary young boy. there are sick people, and then there is Dr. Shirley Turner!
@Sarstan ARE YOU KIDDING ME YOU GOD DAMN, IGNORANT FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT MORON!!! I hope your stupid fucking ass gets murdered by a fucking woman... in fact... I'D BE GLAD TO DO IT FOR SOMEONE AS FUCKING STUPID AS YOU! Except you're too dumb for me to possibly serve prison time for.... Before you post a really embarrassing post like this.... why don't you do some research and see HOW MANY MEN KILL WOMEN EVERY SINGLE DAY AND GET AWAY WITH IT YOU IDIOT SADIST!
That poor family! I think what made the film was the vast emotions and changes in the whole concept on the film that catches you. Kurt didn't know how the film was going to end, so the twist leaves you with raw emotion, not just recollected feelings.
oh god, i didn't know if i could finish watching this documentary. there were times i had to pause because it became overwhelming. the pain that poor family has been through.. there are no words...what an amazing man this filmmaker is to make a film about his friend and to tell this story... it breaks my heart :(
@dbritton41 Same here. It took me almost 2 1/2 hrs to watch it because I had to keep taking breaks to catch my breath. But immediately after finishing, I called my dad and said, "I love you, you have to watch this documentary." It's such an important film.
@PlasmicSteve are you serious? of course i finished watching the whole documentary. what would make you come to the conclusion by my comment that i hadn't? did you finish watching it?
@dbritton41 Sorry - I misread "didn't" as "don't" in your previous comment - as in "I don't know if I could finish watching this documentary." My fault - I re-read it now. Glad you finished it and got something out of it, as did most people who watched the movie, I'm sure.
@PlasmicSteve because i said the filmmaker was an amazing man? i think he is.. he had the strength to go on despite the horrific pain and loss he'd been through losing his best friend and then .... but he finished it so the story would be told.
ive just watched this documentary, and i have never been so shocked and appalled, what Andrews parents had to go through is just unbelievable, for instance, having to be in the presence with the 'blatently obvious' killer of their son just to see their grandson for a few hours! it was obvious to me, just after a few seconds, that this woman was seriously unstable. This should never happen again
i've watched many documentaries and shows on murders and what not, but for some reason this one really just grabs me. Maybe its the way it is so different from the others, but I really felt something watching this one.
Sadly, I've said it before and I still say it to this day. The Canadian Justice system is a joke. You commit murder in Canada and get a slap on the wrist. I'm a Canadian and I'm ashamed with our justice system. Sadly, the justice system failed just like it does time and time again with the exact situation(s) that occurred in the film.
I watched the film, cried like a baby. I cried for about 2 minutes after the movie had ended.
Don't you love it when we live in a world where people kills other for the sake of religion? For the sake of anger and revenge which is stemmed from childish situations? And for the sake of being broken up by because the person being dumped is a someone who felt that if they couldn't be together then the counterpart cannot exist. What a tragedy. Shit like this just has to happen. Shirley Turner doesn't deserve a grave or a life. She needed to rot in a waste fill.
It's amazing how a woman with MULTIPLE suicides attempts and a confirmed murderer was found not to be a threat to herself and others BY HER SHRINK. It amazes me to know how this woman was released on bail twice, while the system decided if she should be extredited, how a possible Supreme Court judge would set the woman free again, because the person she wanted to harm, she had already harmed so nobody else should worry. BUT NOT ONE OF THESE MORONS SAY SHIT ABOUT THE BABY THE HELPED HER KILL
watch the movie and listen to what he said he should of done in the first place but did'nt ...i would of done that day 1...women like this don't deserve to live
This film is moving, heart-breaking, wonderful, funny (at times), and most importantly REAL. It's one of the most telling documentaries I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. As a film fanatic, this is on top of my MUST WATCH list I tell people to see. Thank you Kurt, for making this and sharing it with the world. I honestly don't know how you got through this, but thank you.
I honestly thought I had a heart attach watching this movie, I started feeling intense pressure and pain in my chest. Then as the music played at the end as the credits rolled, I did not want it to end because I was afraid of how I would deal with the silence. See this documentary only if you are willing to be permanently changed as a result.

My heart aches for Zachary's grandparents. All the hell this woman put them through. Ripping their only son from them, and then forcing them to be civil with her so they could see their grandchild, only to take him away too. I don't think there is anyone stronger than these two. This is such a tragic story.
This film looks heartbreaking. I want to see it, but IDK if I can take it. I accidentally just read what happens in the end (stupid spoiler) but I am kind of glad so that it can prepare me. Just from this trailer alone, this man looks like he was a good person. It is a shame that his life was taken so young.
As a general principle, I don't cry. Movies, life, it jdoesn't happen. A full year after seeing this movie, just watching the trailer has me practically bawling.
I had to see this documentary for a class at the University. When I saw it, I just could not help feeling sad and very angry. It's really exciting. See it, is very good
I can not recommend this highly enough. It is an incredible gripping piece of cinema that even if it was not a true story it would still be an emotional roller coaster like you have never experienced and would still break your heart. The fact this is true absolutely floors any decent human being. I challenge anyone to see this and not be moved to tears.
I hope to god Gail Welsh is not working as a judge anymore as she does not have the mental capacity for the job. Zachary's death is on her hands and I hope it haunts her everyday.
I have experienced my best friend commit suicide. My closest Grandmother die and my brother go to prison for two years. Never have I EVER cried so hard in my life until I saw this movie.
What can I say... The movie moved(haha) me... Every time I remembered a gut punching moment from the film I felt like a pressure was on me... Last time I felt that way was when my girlfriend died in a car crash so this film helped me become aware of that dreadful feeling either way I wish the best for the family

A compelling story and you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't see it immediately.

It was perfect, devastatingly perfect, but it's left me numb.
coffeetea720 6 months ago 15
@coffeetea720 I think this movie is truly exceptional because it involves the viewer in the same emotions that the people filmed felt--love, hatred, rage, grief. I think it was the real experience of all these feelings that made me feel numb afterward too. No film/documentary has ever done that before or since. It hits you on a visceral level.
00thebigkahlua00 3 months ago
This is the most devastating movie I have ever seen. When it got to the part where Zachary was murdered, I broke down crying. No movie has ever made me feel the way this film did.
TheOshgoshbigosh 6 months ago
This is really an amazing documentary. Anyone who hasn't seen it, should. It's so so moving, and it truly makes you think about life and the people in yours.
I am so sorry for all of the friends and family who lost not one but two amazing men. And I'm sorry for the children of Shirley; everyone deserves a loving mother, and it's not fair that you didn't have that.

noelmsp007 7 months ago

That poor family! I think what made the film was the vast emotions and changes in the whole concept on the film that catches you. Kurt didn't know how the film was going to end, so the twist leaves you with raw emotion, not just recollected feelings.
kheatherly 7 months ago 2
oh god, i didn't know if i could finish watching this documentary. there were times i had to pause because it became overwhelming. the pain that poor family has been through.. there are no words...what an amazing man this filmmaker is to make a film about his friend and to tell this story... it breaks my heart :(
dbritton41 7 months ago 27
@dbritton41 Same here. It took me almost 2 1/2 hrs to watch it because I had to keep taking breaks to catch my breath. But immediately after finishing, I called my dad and said, "I love you, you have to watch this documentary." It's such an important film.
maggsamillion 6 months ago
@dbritton41 I can tell from your comment that you haven't finished it... you really should.
PlasmicSteve 6 months ago
@PlasmicSteve are you serious? of course i finished watching the whole documentary. what would make you come to the conclusion by my comment that i hadn't? did you finish watching it?
dbritton41 6 months ago
@dbritton41 Sorry - I misread "didn't" as "don't" in your previous comment - as in "I don't know if I could finish watching this documentary." My fault - I re-read it now. Glad you finished it and got something out of it, as did most people who watched the movie, I'm sure.
PlasmicSteve 6 months ago
@PlasmicSteve oh, okay no problem :)
dbritton41 6 months ago
@PlasmicSteve because i said the filmmaker was an amazing man? i think he is.. he had the strength to go on despite the horrific pain and loss he'd been through losing his best friend and then .... but he finished it so the story would be told.

ive just watched this documentary, and i have never been so shocked and appalled, what Andrews parents had to go through is just unbelievable, for instance, having to be in the presence with the 'blatently obvious' killer of their son just to see their grandson for a few hours! it was obvious to me, just after a few seconds, that this woman was seriously unstable. This should never happen again

SwimSweetie100 9 months ago
This film looks heartbreaking. I want to see it, but IDK if I can take it. I accidentally just read what happens in the end (stupid spoiler) but I am kind of glad so that it can prepare me. Just from this trailer alone, this man looks like he was a good person. It is a shame that his life was taken so young.

As a general principle, I don't cry. Movies, life, it jdoesn't happen. A full year after seeing this movie, just watching the trailer has me practically bawling.
