The only way to transcend race is to be able to "forget race" or to be able to interact with people and only judge them based on what they say and not on how they look. There are whites that are very popular in the black community. In some of those cases one could argue that it is because people forget they are white. Not that they act black but that they feel like one of "us". I think this is what Mathews meant here. If we can all become part of the family then race is no longer a divider.

When I say that he was complementing his leadership I base that on the fact that he was saying, that due to his leadership he had transcended race. The fact that he said black is what throws everyone off. If he had said the same thing but used the word race instead of black I think it would have been better understood. But the meaning is the same.

Poverty does not always equal crime. Look at Asian countries where there is a lot more poverty in comparison to the average citizen here - but there is less violent crime. Culture has a lot to do with it as well (with many other factors). Difficult to point to something and see it in black and white and go THAT'S the reason.

Crime is directly linked to poverty, and because of history, blacks are generally poorer than whites (by a large margin) hence the crime. For me, this just highlights the real problem and shows that it isn't so much a political ideology thing, but something that ALL Whites needs to examine and address. Democrats/liberals/progressives have those who share such thoughts, but this doesn't discount the fact that the GOP/conservatives/TPM/Birthers have a disproportionate share amongst their ranks.
I think Jon Stewart hit it on the head when he said Matthews was one scotch away from becoming Ron Burgundy (from the movie "Anchorman").

The fact that Matthews sought to make an issue of it is what makes him different from me, and most American's. In my lifetime I've come to recognize that the bigots in this world are the ones that see color first and the person second. That is what Matthew's sees or saw. The only way to transcend race is to be able to "forget race" or to be able to interact with people and only judge them based on what they say and not on how they look. There are whites that are very popular in the black community. In some of those cases one could argue that it is because people forget they are white. Not that they act black but that they feel like one of "us". I think this is what Mathews meant here. If we can all become part of the family then race is no longer a divider.

When I say that he was complementing his leadership I base that on the fact that he was saying, that due to his leadership he had transcended race. The fact that he said black is what throws everyone off. If he had said the same thing but used the word race instead of black I think it would have been better understood. But the meaning is the same.
I am not partisan and I try not to ever assume that someone is racist or has a racist meaning.

Yeah that's cool. And I guess my opinion is a little biased because I believe that focusing on race even if it comes from the point of racial pride is divisive. I think that sometimes "black pride" can make it harder for us to overcome racial barriers. It can require a hyper-awareness of your own race which only makes us hyper-aware of how different we are from others. How about just personal pride. Anyway, thanks for the good discussion.

Poverty does not always equal crime. Look at Asian countries where there is a lot more poverty in comparison to the average citizen here - but there is less violent crime. Culture has a lot to do with it as well (with many other factors). Difficult to point to something and see it in black and white and go THAT'S the reason.

Crime is directly linked to poverty, and because of history, blacks are generally poorer than whites (by a large margin) hence the crime. Also, most of that violent crime takes place in poor neighborhoods, and the victims are usually black as well. Finally, blacks are more likely to get jail time due to profiling by police and harsher legal treatment in court

What ignorance; I guess because he's black, he's not expected to stand up and speak with intelleligence. We have had many black well-spoken leaders, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Tupac Shakur, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass; and an abundance of more. For him to say that was just a notion of how far we have not come.

I'm not sure if I'm offended. I don't think I am. We need to stop acting like we're not racist and stereotypical. Matthews seems to only be highlighting a point that 99% of the rhw American population won't, "I"m racist."
