I have a Jack Russell-Rat Terrier dog. She's almost 12 years old. We used to breed Jack-Rats for a long time and then we stopped 11 years ago (Hence the dog we have now) :P

Nice dog and as inquistive as a Jack, definately a JRT mix as a full Jack does not have prick ear.

Rat Terriers are related to Jacks but are bred from totally different dogs. Rats DO NOT have JRTerriers in them at all. A Rat Terrier is a Smooth Fox Terrier bred w/ a beagle and either a Whippet or an Italian Greyhound (usually a Whippet). The common ancestor is the Smooth Fox Terrier of Britain.

I don't think your dog is a rat terrier, I have a couple of registered rat terriers and I think your dog is more Jack Russel mixed with something.

Rat terrier? They have never been called that they were bread as a fox terrier by rev jack russel when he died people called them jack russel terriers to honour him.

@ddhhm Why on earth would you buy a dog from a breeder. At my shelter we ave TONS of purebred dogs. For 85$ includes the spay or neuter. You get a free first vet visit. A bag of food. And all of our dogs have been fully vetted. In fact, we just had someone surrender 2 dogs. 1 a purebred jack russel terrier and 1 a purebred rat terrier. They had papers and were already housebroken. DON,T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER DOGS DIE.

@senk8drol It takes about 5 minutes and we call and make a spay/neuter appointment. It is not a long and drawn out ordeal. If you buy from an AKC breeder, you have to fill out paperless for the AKC( we have dogs with AKC papers too).
