Great video, just one comment, if you have a reverse torx socket you can easily take out the stud that has the clip without beating on it . The light assembly will pop off
@jazzpianist2011 I only had a Flip Video camera with me at the time, and I don't think a tripod would've been good to try to place in the trunk when I tried to show specific parts of the car. But yeah I know it looks pretty amateur, but it was also over a hundred degrees out that day lol
@trynotfitness No problem, I think the most toughest part about this was just getting the determination to just get it done and start taking things apart.
Not sure if you still check this, but I realized all my brake lights are not working, I checked my fuse and it was okay. Are the tail lights dual beams? I haven't replaced the bulbs since I bought the car two years ago, and I'm not sure how long before that when the last time they were changed. I am just hoping its not the piece connected to the brake itself. Before I spent the money on all new bulbs, I wanted to know if they are dual and maybe thats it?
@skylerdeckard Hrm, I'm not sure man. I don't think they are, but I could be wrong. If both brake lights aren't working, I'd guess it was something with the connection. I'd say it'd be a rare occurrence if both lights went out at the exact same time.
@skylerdeckard Hm, well I'm glad you figured out what the issue was. I haven't had the issue happen to my car yet, but I think this might be the last year I own my 02 Stang. Nearly 100 thousand miles and it's just not up to par with my standards anymore.
I've found the trick to that bitch of a washer. Once you get the goop off of it, you'll see that there are little wings holding it to the nut. Use a small flat head to flip the wings open, then you can actually rock the washer until it spins freely.
Kudos to my father-in-law who gave it a look after I spent 30 minutes trying to dig the thing out. He looked closer and saw it right away.
I just finished changing my bulbs in my 1999, thanks for the vid it was real helpful. It wasn't so much of a pain in the ass for me because for some reason that washer that you had to rip out wasn't there and I was able to access the last screw without removing the side panel.
great vid! but i have a question, i own a 2008 v6 mustang. i looked to try to replace the tail light, and i think its the same weird build. have you talked to anyone/ or found out if the later mustang models taillights are the same annoying process? any info helps :)
Thanks. I started taking things apart, but stopped because it seemed too complicated just to get to the freaking tail lights. But I guess Ford engineering ain't the brightest!
Thanks for posting this LordSephiros. One of the tailights on my '04 Mustang just went out. Bought a replacement bulb for a few bucks thinking it would be a piece of cake to replace the old one. Apparently it's a major project thanks to Ford. Wish me luck...
Lmao. Dude Ur hilarious in this video. I'd be cursing my ass off too. What I find really strange is how really simple it is to replace the headlight bulbs but when it comes to the rear it's almost ad if they decided "u know what? Let's them those bitches suffer!" lol
Anyways thanks for the video man. This helps a lot of us confused ppl.
@VaeVictus666 I hope it helped! I was genuinely upset at Ford for making it so difficult. Some people just wanna work on their cars at home, why punish us?!
holy shit man!! ok my first comment was before I watched the whole video, this is ridiculous what the hell were the mustang engineers thinking? I've replaced many tailights and blinkers in my time and Its never been this complicated, insanity. Anyways thanks again for the video
There's a tool, I think it's called a fastener remover. I have one, and it pops those plastic pins out in no time. Super easy, and it's come in handy lots of times!
Oh man...... I was thinking it would be silly to take this to a mechanic just to replace one brake light....but there's NO WAY I have the time or patience to do all that crap.... Why did they make it so complicated?? :(
They do that so you WOULD go pay a mechanic (Mostly the dealership) to replace it! You should try it out though and only take it to a mechanic if you mess up somewhere. If I can do it, you can do it! I hope my videos explain enough for ya to try it! :)
Thanks for the post. You think Ford engineer's might have thought that bulbs don't last forever and people might not want to remove 15 parts just to change a freaking bulb.
maybe those engineers got almost completely done with putting the car together then went "sh*t dude we totally forgot about the tail light bulbs!" then just threw them in there haha
Hey no problem, I hope it helped. Was it informative enough? I might do it again but with my brother holding the camera so you guys can see more clearly what I was doing.
You should make a video on how to replace fog lights on the 99-04 gt.

good helpful video but very hard to follow. You may want to invest in a $20 tripod for the cam, anyway it's a good video.

This is a great video tutorial and saved me a ton of money. Here are a few tips to make the job easier:
1. use the claw side of a hammer to pull out the plastic barbs that hold the trim around the trunk latch
2. use bswb's comment to remove lock washer
3. change ALL the bulbs in both taillights so you don't have to repeat this for a while
4. reassemble with split ring lock washers on the bolts so they don't shake loose or use locktite.
Once again, outstanding job!

@LordSephiros I got it fixed. I guess for this body style, its a very common issue for the Brake Lamp Switch to go out.
