She kissed me, too, and told me, "Oh, don't weep!" How could I not? She was so beautiful, so unlike anything else surrounding me on that New York City day in 1993. Extraordinary human being--she makes one believe in faery, in the uncanny.
Eye contact to the camera, constant focus, Kate. Amazing! And amusing, especially when she couldn't find which camera she's on at 2:51 and then she did.
Hey if anyone is on for a laugh check out Kris Shreds 'version' of Wuthering Heights, another Kate Bush classic.
The guy is an ego maniac in addition to a pitiful singer, but the funniest thing is that if you make a comment stating that you dont like what he has done with the song he deletes your comments and blocks you from making any more comments.
He cant even get the lyrics right and sings through his nasal cavity. Check it out and have a good laugh! Its pitiful and painful but funny!
Another iconic masterpiece that has stood the test of time a generation later - awesome. I wonder what Emily Bronte would have thought of Kate? She used to sing in the "Rose of Lee pub in Lee High Road, Lewisham, S.E. London in the late 70's and often wander solo around the Riverdale Centre in Lewisham (I saw her there a few times).
This is - trara - my favourite song ever. BUT: Not in this - forgive me, Kate - relatively whimsical version, BUT in the NEW VOCALS from the mid 80s. That version is just perfect. Wonder whether it is available on youtube?
Immense talent. You could hardly tell this performance apart from the studio. Plays the piano too. Pretty good dancer, idiosyncratic style. Always been a fan.
yes it was live - it wasnt until the the post punk era - leading into the new romantic era early 80s that they switched - because of the techno-synthezizer sound
i read the novel and its full of pure awesomeness....! very catchy n mind-blowing.... if u want a change i say you should read it.... never read anything as beautiful as this.... i was 12 when i first read it, now m 16... but even now when m free i read it....
Anyone who hasn't, if you like this song you might want to consider reading the book it's based upon. It's a very striking and captivating book that leaves you thinking alot about human nature.
The most talented female songwriter and performer of all time. And better than most of the men too. Genius is an overused word but it applies to Kate.
She's like a female Brian Wilson. Someone who was so talented that they created their own style and influenced so many people that most artists are now copying their styles. Kate Bush's voice is so powerful too and I love the book she based this song on.
This version is a bit better than the 'black dress' version she did for totp a few weeks previously. The 'black dress' version was her first tv appearance and apparently when she watched it she hated it and said "it was like watching myself die - a bloody awful performance''!
It wasn't that bad, but I think this version has more emotion and its great that the piano part is played up here.
per your request, another "must" for your collection, briana. this features a great, "live" vocal, but, check out her mouth and eyes. 'from outer space, right?
I like watching this one more than when she is dancing. Its wonderful to watch her lips as she is actually vocalizing the lyrics. I wonder what it would be like to kiss her....
How is it that Tori Amos is ripping of Kate ? and why are you so thik headed to say she has no talent i kinda feel a face to palm moment comming after reading your comment Rudakai.
thank you id not seen the baby grand version- scary ghost stuff- ghosts are not to be denied, or angered, i pity Heathcliff if he ever had a woman later on (and her, he was such an ass)- Kates a vision in this video
This is her best effort at this song and completely surpasses any of her WH videos. Here, with only her facial expressions, she masterfully conveys the aggressive haunting poltergeist who stalks "her one dream, her only Master" with wildly seductive and reproachful haunting. The camera angles were well thought out with the fade away showing her in profile at the piano and you look at it and you think, wow, "ghost". I will always be haunted by this powerful seductive and eerie performance.
Remember the first time I heard this - I was at a Student's Union bar and it came blaring out of the speakers I was gob-smacked I couldn't believe her voice - awesome!!! Timeless!! I can see why people draw comparisons between her and Tori Amos (I love her too!) both have a very unusual range in their voices, plus I think they are both theatrical performers not just vocalists.
As i recall, this song caused a sensation in 1978,at the time[i was 10!]i didn't like it much. However, now i absolutely love it.Its a song that i have grown up with, through good times and my married life!!{now finished thank god!!}A true classic in every sense of the word, and it will always bring back memories of the summer of 78.
parce que les anglophones ne sont pas les seuls à adorer Kate Bush.... Amazing performer. How can she possibly reach those high notes? My brother says she is the female counterpart of Leonard Cohen, and I have to agree with him...
I think it's a testamount to Kate's talent that she was allowed to sing live on TOTP (a show which at the time insisted that artists made mimed performances) at such an early point in her career.

In this song, both the music and the performance are truly equal to the novel and maximizes its mysticism.
Astonishing, bearing in mind how young she was when she wrote it. I guess, like me she was quite a bit fascinated by that story...

This IS a live recording. Compare it to thealbum/single track. At 0:11 ("tem-PER") you can hear that she gets too close to the mic.
I believe TOTPs did sometimes have live acts - but in the old days. This recording would have been 1978, I think.
