I bought the H2 a few days ago to record my drums cause my camera mic sounds crappy. I didn´t compare them in my video but the H2 sounds waaay better.
uumm... theres not much of a difference. I mean the zoom has obviously better range but in terms of clarity its about the same a freaking digital camera. -_-
@slodrum Hi! Yes, I used the comp 3 setting with LOW sensitivity. Recording level was probably around 40 (if i remember right, its been a while). Then I just used the H2's normalize function to bring the level up. I may have used Audacity to tweak the volume some more, but that would have been all i did. No effects were put on the recording.
@UkeOfEarl Thanks man, yeah I realized the sound volume difference when I put the video up. When I record with the h2, I typically put it on a low recording level and then normalize it back up. But the camera i was using here always recorded pretty loud and harsh (for drums at least imo), so maybe that has something to do with it, Im not totally sure.
@normandy100 I just recorded myself with my camera and mic. Put the recording over the video sound in windows movie maker, and move it until the sound matches the playing.
@dkucia11 Hey thanks, the mic is just off screen to the left. Its probably 3 ft away from the hihat. That room is not sound controlled in the least haha, its a double wide trailer actually.
Just made my own stack just like you did in this vid, you were the inspiration. Found a 10" AAX O-zone used for $70 and bought a 12" Hand Hammered Mini China cause I was looking for more of a darker tone. GREAT sound to it! Thanks for the inspiration to stack these cymbals and buy an H2. I'll expect a check in the mail to help pay for these, thanks :)
@GonzoDrummer27 Thats sweet, man. I love stacks. I actually haven't used the ozone/mini china stack in a while. But another one thats really cool is putting a 13" hi hat top upside down inside of a 17" aaxtreme chinese. It has the tone of a china cymbal but the sustain is cut down a lot. Another one that I want to try is a 14" evolution chinese on top of an 18" evolution crash, like dave weckl. And the H2 is a great choice! imo
Sick skills man. I'm in the market for an H2 right now, and your video really helped my decision. But I gotta know... what is that "stack" under that Paragon ride? I see an O-Zone splash, but what's underneath it?
@GonzoDrummer27 Hey thanks. The H2 in this video was stolen in February, so I was in the market for one too for a while haha. Bought a new one a few weeks ago. You're correct on the 10" o-zone splash, the bottom cymbal here was a 12" AAX mini chinese.
I doo love my Zoom H2. The only real down side is if your doing a single instrument recording, and its not faced directly at your instrument or your amp, it picks it up more on one side than the other. I love its quality though.
@PianoColinGuitar there is a setting called mono mix, itll let you place the mic however you want without worrying if itll sound on one side or the other
thanks for posting this, is great to have a comparison of the actual sound of the recorder rather than a 10 min review (which it's great too) without the posibility to hear it for yourself.
@Drummerkid74 Nah, it was upright, not diagonal at all. I had it on a mic stand. It was about 4-5 feet off the ground... not too high. It should still pick up fine if your bass drum is pointing away... on the ozone vid, the h2 was about 6-7 feet high pointing downwards and picked up the bass fine through the cymbal mix.
@Russ88765 I think its best to keep it closer. Sound waves spread apart as they gain distance, so closer is better... at least thats how I think of it. In a treated room like yours, i dont think room noise would play too much into things and would be subtle at worst. Personally though, I would import the play along track into audacity, then use the h2 as an interface to record you playing directly with the track. Then you wouldnt have to worry about recording with pa speakers at all.
@wickedexp That I do not know from experience. I read in a forum that it DOES work as an external mic in a canon hv20 camcorder, but Im not sure if thats the case for every camcorder.
@stef100125 Thanks man. I do use movie maker. Just import the recording as a music file, and line it up with the video manually. How did it fail when you tried it?
might I say, you have some amazing chops sir. But a quick question......is the sound on the h2 determined by placement. I would love to place one on my drum rack but am afraid I wont get good sound with it being placed higher then the drums. In terms of placement where would you put it? Lower? To the front? To the Side? Furthur from the Kit?
@collisionforce Thanks man. Well, id say the mix depends on placement, the sound quality will be good regardless, but the further away you put it, the more room noise there is. Here, the h2 was about 2 ft away to the left side of the kit. On my ozone ride video the h2 was on a boom stand 6 feet in the air pointing downwards directly behind me, and I liked the result. On my sextuplet fill video, the h2 was directly in front of the kit 3 feet out and 4 feet in the air. They all worked fine IMO.
awsome drum skills! hey, was wondering, can the recorder be put on a tripod? or attached to anything? im hoping to look for an audio recorder to do film stuff but my camcorder doesnt support an audio input. wud u rercommend it to film a conversation between two acters? haha, and how far wud they have to be from the mic? thanks, any help will be great. thanks.
@AlanChunkyMunky Yes it can! It has a threaded insert on the bottom that allows you to attach it to tripods with a threaded screw type mount. It does come with a "tripod" but its more like attachable feet. It also comes with a handle that you can screw into it that allows you to put it on a microphone stand. For film, it would work great but you would have to always manually sync the audio with the video, which I would/do find annoying. Then there's also the audio/video lag factor too.
They wouldn't have to be super close to the mic, but like any microphone, the further you move it away the more the room noise comes into play. I wouldn't really worry about it though, unless you are recording the conversation from across the room haha.
I just use windows movie maker.... its all i have. I've been doing some backing track videos recently also. What I've been doing is using the H2 as an interface to record audio directly into Audacity (a free program you can download online). You can import your backing track file into audacity, then record while you play along. Plug headphones into the "line out" port on the H2, and you can monitor what you're recording. Audacity will record you playing with the backing track.
Then, you can save the file as .wav or mp3 (i normally do .wav), and import it into windows movie maker. Then all you have to do is sync the audio and video together and you're done.
yeah, well if you're just trying to get some ideas recorded, the H2 would do fine, but it DOES have less features than the h4n. I absolutely love the h2, but i think the h4n might be a little better geared toward group recordings, especially with the 2 external mic inputs on the bottom.
Oh yeah man. You could set up around it and record 360. When I record my jazz combo, I normally just put it in front of the entire group, so it "hears" what the audience would hear.
Why does it sound dull and muffled with the H2? I was thinking about buying one of these but not so sure now. It seems like all the highs are missing...am I missing something?
depends on what setting & the compression from when the video & audio was uploaded, that's why these sort of comparisons on Youtube are a waste of time.
the H2 has so many mic settings, quality & gain settings... this vid does not paint any sort of clear picture as to what you can do & the quality you will get with experimenting.
IMO the H2 is the best low priced portable recorder going, i take mine to every rehearsal & session.... and it records my drums fine once i get it set for the room.
jigaboodle, i see what you're saying, but as highwood said the video file gets compressed by youtube during upload. The sound quality will suffer accordingly. The actual video file on my pc hard drive DOES have the high frequencies and the sounds are crisp crisp crisp. You watched the HQ version, right?
Yes, I have heard the HQ and you're right it does sound better...actually I'm getting very close to buying the H4n... I'm interested in the Sony PCMM10 as well--unfortunately it is too new to find any feedback on it yet.
I'm pretty sure it was to the left of the kit....the hihat side. It was set up right next to the camera, just off screen to the left. Thanks for the compliment!
It would record a solo guitar very well. Id say this thing is geared more towards solo instruments anyways. The sound quality has never disappointed me.
