I'm assuming pilots would fly a faster air speed in strong head wind of say 40 knots to compensate for the slower ground speed or i suppose you could use a shallower rate of descent but then that would increase appraoch time. If youre landing speed was 140 knots and you had a 40 knot head wind would the pilot most likely fly the approach at for example 170 knots to compensate for the grounspeed. Would the pilot not want to land with a grounspeed of 100 knots. 40 knot headwinds r rare
@210482fmj I dont really know but it would seem dangerous to land with a lower ground speed because of head wind. Because if the head wind were to stop the plane would loose lift and drop. So I would think ground speed should remain the same? I dont know... thats just my reasoning.
German woman's comment in the end: "Wie gut, dass man das im Flugzeug nicht mitkriegt, der hat ja voll verrissen, ne?" ("How good that you don't notice that when you're actually INSIDE the plane, he totally panned it, didn't he?") xD
how stupid. the woman who talks when the 747 lands says: how good that you don't notice all that when you're inside. the pilot must have totally snatched.
@snicker292 They both earn decent salaries, but they don't earn as much as people think. You can be rich and be a pilot, but you won't get rich becoming one.
Just to clarify, the approach is good, but as he lines up the plane with the centerline, he keeps getting blown to the left (most likely due to not having enough aileron into the wind), thus he applies heavy right rudder to keep him from being blown of the runway, and touches down in a way that puts alot of sideloading on the main gear. Nice save, and I have no idea if it's better to put this load on the gear or go around in such a big plane, but it is not the correct way to touch down.
Damn that's gonna put a lot of stress on the landing gear. You're supposed apply heavy rudder to line up the plane with the centerline before touchdown to avoid the sideway loading on the gear (ailerons into the wind, rudder towards the centerline), but yeah it's not always easy with that much crosswind.
@TheGreenGriffon That doesn't mean he can't have a bad landing. Crosswind can be really tricky. And ofcourse he knows what to do better than me, I'm only a commercial pilot, not ATPL, but it doesn't take away the fact that you're supposed to line up the nose with the centerline before touchdown, to avoid sideway loading on the gear. If possible ofcourse, it's better to put stress on the gear than to risk the lives of the passengers.
@apox555 Even a student pilot is trained on how to properly execute a crosswind landing. A 747 captain knows what to do and how to do it. I'd like to see you try executing a crosswind landing in a 145-ton airliner at what was once the most dangerous airport approach on the entire planet. Until you do, stop criticizing.
I love how every commenter on YouTube is the world's greatest armchair pilot.
@TheGreenGriffon and I love how every commenter on Youtube has to argue. I could quote the textbook to show you what I am saying is the right procedure, but you would just keep arguing. Captains have also crashed the 747 so even though they are all professionals, mishaps can happen. If I landed sideways in the plane I fly due to a windshear, shattering a couple of the bolts that holds the gear to the fuselage, would that be OK "cause I know what I am doing"? But like you said, this is youtube.
