  • The ship's company will bear in mind we are at sea under the Articles of War. Perhaps you are unaware that the Articles of War invest in me the authority to order punishment.

During the recent heavy weather, I've had an opportunity to watch all of you at work on deck and aloft.

You don't know wood from canvas, and it seems that you don't want to learn.

Well, I'll have to give you a lesson. You, you, you, step forward.

You three are a disgrace to saltwater!

    Ten days on half rations.

  • This is by far the BEST production. I really did like the Surgeon very much.

    - Here's a navy for you. Rum in the skimmers today and blood in the scuppers tomorrow

    - This is our ship's surgeon. We call him Mr. Bacchus. He's never told us his real name.

    - I've forgotten it

    - You're a plucky youngster. If necessary, I'd be happy to cut off one your legs anytime.

    -Thank you, Sir

  • Interesting little factoid: this is the last film to win the award for Best Picture but no other Oscar to date.

  • It is said that it was the title said as Nankai conquest at that time, and it was an academy work prize.

  • @RichardElden You're a fool!

  • @RichardElden what's wrong with it? i liked that movie!

  • The shirtless man standing on Clark Gable's right at 1:02 is an absolute DEAD RINGER for Michael Douglas.

  • My dad helped to build the studio machinery that made the ship appear to be at sea,it was made by Hall's production scenery in London and strangely enough my surname is halls

  • The best version of all three. Gable is fine, but Laughton is absolutely electrifying as Bligh. Was he really this sadistic in real life? You don`t want to know!

  • The real Bligh was not a sadist, but was too lenient. At Tahiti, Bligh let the men do whatever they wished. When it was time to leave, he was unable to reimpose discipline, and we see the result. All three movies emphasize floggings, but that was a normal part of discipline on board ship. The films overstate the case. At 0:30 we see two men supposedly incapacitated by flogging, but as soon as the mutiny is announced, they up on their feet, ready to take part. They need another flogging!

  • It won't be long before ther's another re-make involving PLEBS like Brad Pitt(cess pit) Colin Farrell etc, etc. What ever happened to real actors, that didn't have to endorse every other shit over rated n marketed product?

  • `Three cheers for Clark Gable. He was pretty sexy when he was young ;D

  • This movie works on all levels. One of at least three reasons why Gable owned the 30's. Either he or Laughton should have gotten the Oscar over the Informer guy, who was actually dreadful. Tone and those two must have split the vote allowing the Informer to win.

  • LOVE! =D

  • In real life Bligh was more lenient than average.

His journey in that small boat is outstanding in the annals of history.

  • One of my most favourite movies because of Charles Laughton's outstanding performance and the awesome german dubbing ( I'm German )

  • i liked better "the bounty" from 1984...

  • Charles Laughton deserved an award not this piece of badly casted crap.

  • I detested Franchot Tone in this, such a nasty little wimp. And he looked absurd in that hat. Ugh.

  • A grand sea faring tale of men...and mutiny!!!

    (it's on TCM right now)

  • In that little boat, the route that Bligh had to map through the Torres Strait 3500 miles to Batavia (Jakarta) was still the standard Admiralty chart reference up til WW2. The man was a genius and Christian a spoilt little boy with syphiliptic brain fever pining for the laydeez of Tahiti.

  • Far better than the two remakes.

  • This is my favourite film. I've never liked Gable much and find it irritating listening to 18th century Royal Navy officers speaking in American accents, but Charles Laughton is superbly amazing in this and his performance outweighs all the stuff in it that annoy me. Truly my favourite film.

  • oh so this is where bugs bunny used he paradoy from.

"look you at mr. christain. a disgrace! mutiny that is!"

  • This is by far the best version.

  • Yes, Blight was a very strict disciplinarian, but he was also one hell of a seaman. The fact that he and his followers managed to survive in the small boat and nmake their way back to England speaks for itself. The best of all the Bounty films in spite of a few historical errors.Even the recreated Bounty itself is magnificent.I`ll take this movie over any of todays movies anyday.

  • grand hotel also won best pic

  • Capt. Bligh might have been shown as being cruel but he was very abusive and meted out harsh punishment to sailors which was the order of the day in a 17th and 18th century ships.

  • capt bligh is given a bad rap in this movie...he did not flog a dead seaman...he came to the defense of several of the sailors at the courtmartial and he did not cut the water ration. if anything he was too light on his crew "he scolded when he should have flogged, and flogged when he should have hung" ..he did go on to make admrial..christian on the other hand imo was the villian. you may hate your capt, but he is still your capt.

  • I agree. Captain Bligh failed to maintain discipline while the crew was in Tahiti, and he was unable to restore it afterward. On board ship, in the middle of the ocean, flogging is a very efficient punishment and sometimes the only practical alternative available.

  • One of the best movies I've ever seen. And not only because Clark Gable is so darn sexy in it! :D

  • I've watched this so many times and am about to watch it again. Thanks for the upload!

  • @SeattleBeaver

Am not sure how many times i have watched but i never feel bored. Charles Laughton as Bligh and Clark Gable as Christian are awesome.

  • A great movie despite being very Americanised.

  • In many respects, this movie is far better than the 1962 remake.

  • The 1962 movie has a better flogging scene, but other than that, it is poorly done in many respects. For example, Brando, as Christian, never takes his shirt off. In the 1935 and 1984 versions, Gable and Gibson, respectively, are shirtless.

  • @mindspring57

1984 version was supposedly historically more accurate.

  • @mindspring57 1984 version was the best for historical accuracy

  • @olebaj I agree that the 1984 version was best for historical accuracy. I guess what I was trying to say is that I think 1962 had a lot of problems!

  • @mindspring57 But i like the 1935 version the best. Have seen it many times and am not bored. Franchot tone, Clark gable, Charles Laughton they all make the movie watchable.... Won't eat cheese aye, before i am done with you i will make you eat grass!!!! scottish accents

  • @olebaj No doubt about it. 1935 is a great movie. 1962 wins in the "gorgeous" category, and may also be interesting to those who wish to see a catalogue of the various British naval punishments. 1962 turns Christian into a fop, and is completely unrealistic in that Christian never removes his shirt (Gable and Gibson do in the other versions). 1962 expects us to believe that Christian lay in the bushes in full naval uniform!

  • @mindspring57 I am waiting for this movie to be made into a reality TV show.

  • This is a great movie, and the Bounty Trilogy by Nordhoff and Hall is some of the finest reading I have ever had.

  • Chuck Laughton was simply outstanding in this role.

  • my icon of the movtes along with sophie loren,a versatile actor who was never type cast.this is my personal favourite film even though trevor howard comes a close second.prosecution for the witness is my next fave, great actor, infact a legend.
