@kamiaussie LOL, well just go to the major cities for that. I been there 3 times and the cities I think that suit your needs are: Saigon(of course),Hanoi,Hue,Da Nang,Da Lat, Nha Tran,Ha Long Bay. i been to more but those cities to me have the most commerce and for natural tourism.

@kamiaussie for shopping, definitely HCM city and Hoi An. if you like nature and culture, then go to the North: Ha Noi, Tam Coc, Ha Long bay.. I know Australia have plenty of beaches. maybe take some time visit tropical beach of VIetnam like Nha Trang or Phu Quoc.

I am Vietnamese and this video seems more of a propaganda than reality. Don't get me wrong, I love Vietnam. However, there are cities in Vietnam that are heavily polluted with rivers being so discolored from the pollution that the water almost appears to be thick and sludge like. Not only that, the Vietnamese government's human rights political view sucks and is considered one of the worst in developing countries. To me, this is the same propaganda Kim Jong Ill uses for North Korea.

The tourist industry in Vietnam however is very bad and many tourists complain about it and rightly so too, it has become a main reason why many don’t return. However away from all the tourist areas such as the countryside you will have the best time of your life with genuine lovely people, it’s the reason why I always go back to be with some very good friends :) Btw Da Lat is a wonderful place and holds some breath taking scenery, if you go check out YK Villa best place I've ever stayed. Luv VN

there is a festival Hue 2010 in juin. it's really beautiful and meaningful because there are environ 30 countries in the word presenting their culture in the same time. Go to Hue, Danang, Hanoi and HochiMinh.

err... not exactly totally subjugated or colonised by westerners(French). Vietnamese adopted Latin letters introduced by Portugese traders , we were not forced to use Latin letters, not from what I read. Just like the world adopted Hindu numerical not because India forced them to .

I've vacation in Vietnam and Laos last year. Vietnam is beautiful and I love the food! But it didn't feel like an Asian country to me. All the road signs look like Spanish words and there are so many catholic churches in Vietnam. It looks like Mexico! Laos is the opposite. The people, culture, religion, food, and written language is all Asian. Nothing is westernized. Laos feels like an Asian country. I like that. I had fun in Laos.

The simplicity of the Latin letters is the reason for the adaptation of its usage. Like the Hindu numerical which the world use today. The old Vietnamese writing before western traders arrived was similar to Chinese characters. Vietnamese language is very unique and different to any language but not totally as combination of French terms and Chinese terms incorporated into Vietnamese language.
