  • I found ur video very helpful, I am a native american Indian and have no idea as how maintain dreads or anything like that and my husband who is african american and started his locs about a year ago and I felt he was getting alot of stupud advice on how to maintain his locs so i started doing some research and was glad i came across ur video Thank You so much. I even started twisting his new growth myself so now i am able to help him with the maintenance of his locs/ Thank You so much.

  • @benpol09 Thanks so much!!

  • Hi Locyourloc,I was looking @youtub trying to find a video on the best products to use for my locs. If you have a video or any information you can share with me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance

  • @1555janet I don't want to endorse a particular product line but there are tons of products made especially for locs. I would suggest starting off with black earth products (shampoo, conditioning spray, and locking gel only). As you get more comfortable start branching out and trying different products. Just make sure to avoid conditioners (try light leave-in conditioning sprays instead) and anything thick and creamy. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for the advice. But idk I think it's too late for me :(

My dreads are very hard at the ends idk what to do I'm stressed tht I may have to start over

    What should I do ?

  • @TWaddy0221 I'm almost 100% sure its not too late for your locs. Take a look at my website and you'll see some of the before/after pics. Some clients have had locs that were in really bad shape and they were able to be repaired. If you live in or around the Atlanta area schedule an appointment with us. I get clients from TN, AL, FL, MS, SC, etc. If you're too far find a loctician in your area and 9.9 times out of 10 they'll be able to help. Give me a call if you need help 404.680.9425

  • @TevinakaPlatinum Ok do whatever you feel comfortable with. Just keep an eye on your locs to make sure they stay moisturized. Thanks for watching!!

  • Were u a loc enthusiast and then a professional or a licensed loct'....I would like to start a home business in loc....can I find tips on your vid channel, I have fav this vid for now ...thx so much!!!!

  • @dcampbe91 Thanks for the question. I stated doing my own locs out of necessity; every place I went to did a horrible job and/or had terrible customer service. As I started doing my own hair I did research and contacted locticians for advice. At the same time I was doing friends/family, took several classes, and it took off from there. Good luck in starting your business; its a great feeling to be your own boss and do something you enjoy. Send me an email and I'd be happy to offer some advice.

  • can someone give me a GOOD list of products to use based on this video..

  • @Oddtrav I don't want to endorse a particular product line....but start with Black Earth Products. Just make sure to skip the conditioners. I will try to post another video soon on how to evaluate products.

I am working on my own product line and plan to offer samples to get feedback. So be on the lookout for that. Thanks for watching!!

  • Can you wear a regular beanie to sleep? Instead of a silk bonnet?

  • @POSHDesigner Thanks for watching my video!! You don't have to wear a bonnet but whatever you use needs to be a silky or satin material. Try scarves or dreadlock socs to keep your hair contained and keep you comfortable.

  • THANK YOU! I appreciate you videos they have been helping. Can you recommend me to anyone in MIA??

  • @Jvilander Sorry I don't know anyone in that area. :o(

  • thank you sooo muchh , i like how you kept it real and explained everything .

  • @tariklogan That was my goal because I feel that people sugarcoat things and sometimes you just need to know the truth! Lol Thanks for watching.

  • so helpful, THANK YOU!

  • Is tea tree oil (dilute with water) can be good to moisturize the locs?! If not, can you please give me a good suggestion :)

  • @KOmillion11223 Tea tree oil does not moisturize hair. Its good for keeping the scalp clean and preventing dandruff. There are lots of products made specifically for dreadlocks. Use a search engine or check out Amazon to find tons of product lines, start with Black Earth Products. If you're going to make your own products do some research by getting some books or finding valid websites that list the recipes with the right properties AND right proportions. Thanks for checking out my video.

  • @locyourlocs Thank you very much!!!! I really appreciate it! You save me from spraying tea tree oil on my locs. Alright, I will do some researches to find the best dreadlocks products. I subscribe to your channel because you have good informative video.

  • question, i have starter locs and I use water and tea tree oil to retwist my hair, but here is my problem, my scalpe stays dry even if i oil it with cooking olive oil or the tea tree oil. I also use doo gro triple strength detangle to moisturze my hair. Please help I dont won't dandruff in my locs

  • @RealMrzhill Are you starting free-form locs b/c tea tree oil, or any type of oil, won't keep your hair twisted. Dry scalp could be caused by several and/or a combination of things like not shampooing properly, shampooing too often/not enough, dry skin, etc. I suggest you give yourself a good shampoo, 30 min hot oil treatment and then light rinse out excess oil. Oil or grease scalp (use products made specifically for locs) every day or so until you find the right schedule for your hair.

  • @RealMrzhill I also should also mention that if you choose to continue using tea tree oil make sure you DILUTE IT in another oil so it only makes up 1%-5% of the solution. Repeated use of undiluted tea tree oil may cause skin irritation that could be confused for dandruff or dry scalp.

  • thankz for the tips.. very helpful

im planning on starting my locs nxt three months just wanna give my hair some extra time to get some length..

im considering the comb twist method is that gd for starting out?

And is it better to use wax or gel?,i was planning to use wax cuz of my hair type it would hold better.

n i've stocked up on few products like dry cleanse shampoo to keep hair clean, n olive oil sheen spray to keep moisturized ... any advice u have would be greatly appreciated

  • @MrIcekidd11 I'm finishing up a video abt pros/cons of different methods to start locs that should give you some insight into picking the right method for you. Although wax has its benefits I discourage people from using it b/c it causes serious buildup and people are always heavy-handed. Wax is best left to the intermediate-expert level and only in certain situations. Oil sheen shouldn't be used as a moisturizer. Find moisturizing products made for dreadlocks (oil, grease, moisturizing sprays).

  • How do you feel on interlocking dreads.? I have had my dreads for a year an 7months now and meanwhile been interlocking them for a few months..Would I end up wit unhealthy results doing both?

  • @RaiShan1 I have mixed feelings abt interlocking b/c it does keep locs neater longer but also causes root thinning/breakage if done too often and leave gaps/holes (this usually happens in parts of the head you can't see while interlocking). I'm assuming you're asking if palmrolling and interlocking is bad and its not because after interlocking, locs should be lightly palmrolled to smooth down hairs. My advice interlock 6-8 weeks or longer, don't do it super tight, use a mirror to check for gaps.

  • @locyourlocs Thanks I'll Take Your Advise Into Consideration.God Bless Sista.

  • for medium length hair, which is better for neater cylinder looking locs two strand twist or palm rolls?

  • @cqgmickey I'm not a big fan of starting locs with two strand twist because palmrolling the hair twists the two strands in opposite directions which can cause breakage from the friction and it takes a long time to look like locs instead of a braided style. Cylinder locs depend on the quality of hair in that loc and how much you palmroll. To get neater locs retwist more often ( 2-3 weeks), wear your hair in styles that limit root movement, and follow my tips. Thanks for watching!!

  • Love love love your hair.

  • @Shahz39 Thanks soo much. When I did the video it was time for me to retwist so this is what my hair looks like when I think its rough. lol

  • um thiz video waz a lot of help um i whanted to ask what is the best product to use

  • @superdreadhead15 Thanks for checking me out I really appreciate it. I don't want to endorse particular products but overall most dreadlock products work well for home use. Just be sure the product is for made for dreadlocks on black hair and stay away from anything creamy. As far as locking gel stay away from white cream stuff and make sure your properly dry your hair (i.e. sit under hair dryer until locs are fully dry.) Have fun and experiment.

  • what shampoo do you prefer?

  • @lifegoesonbruh I don't want to endorse a particular product but most dreadlock shampoos work well for home use. Experiment with a few different brands to see what works best for you, just remember to stick with shampoos make specifically for dreadlocks and avoid thick/creamy ones.

  • @dinsmore1982 All dreadlocks generally require the same care. Follow all of the tips in this video and you will be on the road to healthy, well maintained locs. Make sure you always shampoo your hair well to remove/prevent buildup. Obviously you don't have to worry about retwisting but you can pull your hair apart after shampooing if you want to prevent large clumps. Or don't worry about it and enjoy letting your hair decide its own path, but make sure you dry it completely and moisturize.

  • I wish you were in nj/NY

  • Your pretty:)

  • @stymie662 Thanks I appreciate that!!

  • Thanx for responding...I meant since my hair is longer, almost bra strap length, is there sumthing I should do different since it is a longer length?

  • @Chinqyeyes26 Since your hair is longer you should use backcombing and interlocking to start your locs. Depending on your hair texture you might even want to use a crochet method which is using a small crochet hook to entangle your hair.

  • I am considering loccing and have been natural for about 2 years any tips since my hair is not the lenght ppl typically start locs at?...Thanx in advance :)

  • @Chinqyeyes26 If you've been natural for two years I'm pretty sure your hair is long enough to start locs because all you need is a few inches. Sometimes women are hesitant to start locs with short hair so suggest they dye their hair a few shades lighter to make their locs a little more feminine and fun. If you're still concerned about starting locs with short hair you can get dreadlock extensions and have locs whatever length your budget can afford. Thanks for checking out my video!

  • Loved the video! I've had my locs for a year now and I conditioned it for the first time. How often should I condition it. Thanks GOD BLESS

  • @akbkilla I don't use any conditioners because the product is usually too thick and creamy. Conditioners are a huge pain to rinse out and may cause buildup. I condition my hair with hot oil treatments generally once a month and follow a regular moisturizing regimen. If you do want to use conditioners be sure to dilute it first and you can condition it once a month. If you find your hair is getting greasy, try every other month until you find the perfect balance. Thanks for checking out my video!

  • I've had my locs for 11 months, and I recently went to a stylist that trimmed along my locs to get rid of the frizziness. Do you think this could cause some damage later? Also, do you think interlocking can cause your locks to thin?

  • @Super504gurl If the loc wasn't cut, cutting off frizzy hairs is fine. Try putting locking gel down the length and palmroll root to tip. I'm currently working on a hair care line and one of the products is aimed at reducing frizz.

Interlocking should be done no more than every 6-8 weeks or roots will thin. Be sure to check with your loctician. Personally, I don't think interlocking should be the main way locs are maintained because it puts stress on the roots. Thanks for checking out my video.

  • I had my locs for almost 11 months, and I've been dealing with friz. I went to a hairstylist, and he cut away the friz along my locs. Do you think this will cause some damage to my locs later? Also, do you think interlocking causes your hair to thin eventually?

  • Great Video, I thought it was really comprehensive and interesting. I've had dreads for about 2 years, and they always seem dull and faded, which makes my hair look very dry. Do you have any do it yourself tips on how to increase the shine in my locks, (minus the nasty build up of course)?

  • @jwhizzy212 Dull/faded locs could be from dry hair, buildup, or not shampooing regularly.

Start off by giving yourself a hot oil treatment (oil on hair+shower cap+dryer+25 minutes) and deep shampoo (do a triple shampoo and use a pre-shampoo product in addition to shampoo). if you retwist make sure you sit under dryer until your hair is COMPLETELY dry. Then oil scalp/hair and follow a regular moisturizing regimen.

Try it out and we'll go from there. Thanks for checking out my video!!

  • A great video with great tips. I was wondering what products you meant for step#3. Like a V05 Hot oil treatment of just conditioner????? Not sure what to use. THks

  • @triplelocks I personally use and suggest my clients use No More Itch Gro Spray (by Jamaican Mango & Lime) as a daily moisturizer and African Healing Oyl (by Black Earth Products) as a weekly oil treatment.

Experiment but stick with products made for specifically for locs. Daily moisturizer should be light and not leave buildup. For the weekly oil treatment you can also use olive oil or a thick grease/pomade.

Thanks for checking out my video!!
