As a Buddhist, I must say that Buddhism IS a religion, because it was necessarily developed through historical-social processes and cultural phenomena such as "rituals", which are part of human traditions. This fact must be respected and not be denied.. BUT at the same time, it is also NOT a religion, because there are very great correlations with modern rational sciences such as Physics, Psychology and Neurosciences. This is the beauty of Buddhism.
Pangpingw- It may not be passive as far as introspection goes, but it is passive in terms of promoting material and social progress. As the historical record shows, predominantly Buddhist societies have not produced great inventors, scientists, industrialists, social activists, etc. in the past. That may be changing now, however.
Christianity as it is generally practiced does encourage materialism. Check out Max Weber's "Protestantism and the Spirit of Capitalism", which pretty much applies to mainstream Christianity (not just the Protestant variety). Of course, what we call Christianity now bears little resemblance to the cult which began 2,000 years ago. My comment was mainly a consideration of the fact that for all its drawbacks, the West has been at the forefront of material progress.
I think that Buddhism has alot to teach the West, esp. the adherents of the Abrahamic religions. However, neither type of religion/philosophy is sufficient by itself. It's true that Western religions tend to make society more materialistic and competitive, but their silver lining is material and social progress. The downside of the Eastern systems is passivity and self-absorption. Maybe the world needs a hybrid.
@alexandraacreator Buddhism is both a path towards self-knowledge and religion. It's between the two. Because when we need a place to hold to, we hold on to triple gem. The faith is religion part of Buddhism. Its with the faith, we can persist on the path towards enlightenment.

bows.. wish I could implement the words but I am trapped in Samsara apparently.. all the resentments I'm carrying around are causing me a lot of suffering..
"Good Enough" for the present moment, that's beautiful. Admitting our failures, but letting it go cos it's not the present moment, regret is useless. Being mindful, we'll realise that anger and regret are waste of energy.
The present determines the future. If our mind is not cluttered, we are peaceful and happy, we can make better plans, better actions, better preparations, be more likeable - that will make our future better and happier too!
meaning? you are angry with somone called "god" for that? which god did that then? and he is somehow therefore "wrong" for that? perhaps you are saying it is "wrong" that people die in earthquakes therefore somehow god is a nasty person? is that it? meaning please?
@robtherub To answer your first question, by God, I mean all of the Gods from any religion. It is wrong for people to die in earthquakes, but it is also wrong for earthquakes to exist at all; especially if there was a "God" that should most likely posses the power to prevent such catastrophes. The point I am trying to get across is: if God really existed, why would he allow for any of this to happen? Does he enjoy watching his creations perish because of the disasters he manifested himself?
a great profound philosophy. its extremely dangerous for one's worth, one's self respect, and one's a happiness to make the mistake of thinking that happiness lives outside of you in things or people or careers or vacations,. happineess is only contentment which does make life good enjoyable and well worth living.
do something for all the muslim little girls who are molested by their fathers and uncles by selling them at the age of 5,6 to older men for couple of dollors.

Well, I did meet Bhikku Bodhi a few weeks ago through Thubten Chodron setting up a treachign of his as they were both at the teachings of the Lam Rim from the Dalai Lama here and I went to a Zen monastery this weekend, due to missing Zen practice, and they quoted some things from Tibetan teachings as well as mentioning Trungpa Rinpoche and respect that they have for some of his teachings. So there is hope :)

Kind advice to those who are thinking of taking up Buddism
Initially they will talk of peace, harmony, etc., but eventually they will tell you you will have to ordain to reach what you are looking to reach.
And eventually find your self walking in the streets of Bangkok with no footwear, under the hot sun, begging for food!
Dont lose your dignity like that! There is a more dignified and easier way of reaching success in this life and the next! THINK!
