The Mclaren sounded a bit ropey but had they lost the Honda engines by then?

I do believe these were Ford Cosworth V8's in Mclaren this particular year.

Yes. The second and third cars in the shot, the Venturri (Larrouse) team, had Lamborghini V12s.
