Jobim é a raiz, o caule, a folha, a flor e o fruto da música brasileira sofisticada e reconhecida no mundo inteiro.
has anyone heard the version by johnny mathis on you tube with the paintings . it is beautiful . i think he does a better job than ella [ sorry ella . but i sti;; love you ] .
Ella é uma DIVA, sem dúvida. Canta como poucas. E eu que já experimentei as suas empadinhas de camarão com palmito, só posso dizer: Amo essa mulher! Raras são as que conseguem reunir talentos assim.
i first heard this song by a brazilian singer and did not understand one word of it but loved it . now i hear ella sing it in english and love this song even more
I'm Brazilian and I prefer Ray Gilbert lyrics. Both lyrics are much alike, but Ray put an extra felling when he wrote "Don't you know Dindi, I'd be running, searching for you like a river that can't find sea. That would be me without you my Dindi."
The poetic Ray Gilbert lyrics that Iclira referred to is also found on the rendition sung by El DeBarge on the album "A Twist of Jobim." The beauty of the original Portuguese, sung in a dreamy way -- in English.
~Terry, a Jobim fancier who can't speak anything but English, I'm sorry to say.
everytime i hear this tune, i see myself sitting on a beach, with ella on one side and sarah vaughan on the other side eating sandwiches and talking about guys. how i'd love to see them...
I'm a fan of Jane but I think that after hearing her for a while you don't need to listen to any new tunes of her bcs u kinda can say how she'll sound like before you've heard it. Its different with Ella, she suprises me with every song and she kinda never sings a song in the same way....
the greatest even according to frank. sound 17 no matter how old she got. may never be equaled even by todays gorgeous chicks. ella wow what a voice. just the best ever
Has anyone noticed that practically every time Jobim recorded one of his songs, he changed the "changes", although not always for the better. So it is certainly permissible to make alterations, or substitutions, of the chords, if not always advisable.
And who the hell are you to tell a professional musician of this caliber what chords to play? The nerve...
Yeah, that chord is fucked. Don't mess with Jobim, don't add or take away from his original. The nerve... Do you really think you're gonna "improve" the song by changing the chords or jazzing it up to a point where it's no longer bossa? WTF???
I understand what you mean but if you just translate from portuguese into english the words wont fit. Remember that you have to deal with both music and lirics.
Its not a translation, but a VERSION. It´s the author's (JOBIM) VERSION for this great brazilian song.
What I'm most bothered with is the Ab against the melody's F--diffuses the quality of this style before it even gets going. 'Course it doesn't throw Ella off in the slightest. She even digs it the third time with her signature coloratura lead-in. :-D
Looked at the real book...haven't listened to Jobim's versions in ages...so it seems to be Smith's creation (maybe even hers). My computer speakers stink so I don't have the bass for reference, but it sounds to me like it's Bbm7 coloring an amazing "AHH" resolution into the Bbmaj7.
I'm not loving that chord sub he snakes around tonic at the beginning of the verse. Was that in Jobim's original? I think it's hip, but not in the first verse. Maybe on a later verse?

telling stories that belong and of no-one
erez1979 4 years ago
I feel disapointed from the translation. I'm not a gr8 english or portuguese speaker myself, but let me offer the following translation:
Skies, so vast are the skies
Bands of clouds that gently pass
Where to do they go?
Ah, I don't know, don't know.
And the wind talks in the leaves,
Telling stories that belong to no one,
But they are mine
And yours too Ah! Dindi.

Its not a translation, but a VERSION. It´s the author's (JOBIM) VERSION for this great brazilian song.
