My suggestion would be to sowly over time introduce the normal sounds of storms, especialy lightening and thunder into his daily life. The sound itself is not causing the trouble. Its how is brain is registering it and how he chooses to deal with it. Best suggestion here is to have him build up a tollerance to such sounds. Slowly, very slowly. I have hyper sensitive hearing as well. I find some sounds extremely annoying that most people don't.

Have you considered biomedical interventions for him. Most ASD kids are noise sensitive due to insufficient adrenal function. In the interim, headphones that block noise may help him. (Find: Autism Mercury, Recovery From Autism on Yahoo)

My little brother has autism is well and he finds it hard to stand some sounds is well, get him some ear muffs that will really help and another thing I have found which helps suprisigly is the sound of soft music, even though your brother has sensistive hearing , the sound of soft music such as classical music will help calm him down and he won't as distressed by the sound of the rain. BTW your brother is absolutley adorable <3 !

even cheap earplugs will help- the kind you just stuff into your ears. I am a teacher and carry them with me all the time. get him off the floor into a bed so he can't feel the sounds so much, even just rolled up toilet paper and anything he finds soothing- toys, smells. etc. Give it to him!!!

Oh, I totally understand this. I have a severely autistic son who must wear EAR PHONES OR MUFFS almost daily, or an IPOD playing soft soothing music to block out loud noises. PLEASE get this boy some ear muffs or IPOD if he will tolerate this...I don't know what will work for his unique case, but it works for my son to help protect from auditory assaults...smiles and hugs to you!

His autism is not as severe as your brothers and never approved of giving him medication..but seeing your brothers situation where he's getting agitated with himself and actually hurting himself ; i would get some medication for him. Autism is something your born with. You cant really 'get' it and there is medication to make them calmer but it has really bad side effects.

My son is autistic but not sound sensitive. I know a little boy that is. I think you should try noise cancelling earphones. These seem to work well with a few children. Give him to him to put on when those sounds are coming. Good luck.
