100% blame to the spectators. It's a car race and car racing is by its nature dangerous and unpredictable. If you stand near the track with nothing between you and the cars, you've got no one to blame but yourself if you get hit. You shouldn't need a marshal, police officer or organizer to tell you this; it's just obvious.
Group B cars were wheeled missiles at the best of times. FIA should have never authorised these races where year after year there were more people on the road than looking on.
motersport is dangerious, events like this are badly managed, rally like the former rally australia stage never alow spectaters to stand this close for this exact reason,it is the spectaters fault, dont stand to close!!!!!!!!!!
Tragedy is not lessened by stupidity & vice versa. If you don't respect the danger then I think maybe you do deserve to die same as if you cross the road without looking. I wouldn't stand that close to a car on the motorway let alone a rally stage. On the other hand I wouldn't drive in such conditions. Being the rubbish driver I am I would've been pinging spectators on every corner.
not the drivers fault, there is always a chance of an accident on a road, those odds go up when their having a "race" and not just a regular day of traffic the people shouldn't have been standing so close or soo thick/together(maby some could have run if there weren't people behind them) no doubt this is very bad and human life was lost but what if there was only 1 guy standing there every1 would say "y was he standing there?" may they r.i.p
Well it's not (totally) the crowd's fault. The organisers of a rally are meant to be there for a reason. It's their job to protect people from getting injured. The problem of the group b era was that the people's attendance was huge because of the great action the drivers were offering. Due to the amount of people in a S.S. the organisers and/or the marshalls couldn't always control the crowd, resulting in accidents. Apart from that, though, may them R.I.P.!!!
sorry but anyone thinking the spectators aren't at fault is talking nonsense. you dont need an organiser to tell you you might get fucked by a car in the positions they were in
I have been on several rallyes when there has been someone hurt only 100 of meters from me and i must admit that people are lunatics thinking that a proffesional wont have a problem with the crouds so close...! cheering from a further distance when the cars pass may only speed theyrs times up and thats good for the recordsbraking guys that pushes over 110% of therir skill and tecnic... a croud that close are just not a part of making that happen

Yes, before entering F1, Jean Todt had previously been a co-driver helping PTS win the Makes title in 1981 (Driver's title was won by Vatanen with Dave Richards as his co-driver). Jean Todt was then made head of Peugeot Talbot Sport ans lead the team responsible for creating the 205 T16.

Era o melhor Rally do Mundo naquela altura....... e continuava a ser decerteza se nao fosse o acidente.... o meu pai estava 200 metros mais acima, noutra curva :S deve ter sido horrivel
It seems as Joaquim Santos, still quite unexperienced with the RS200, tries to correct the entering angle on the turn so he wouldn't hit the first two that seem to be standing in the middle of the road just a couple meters before the turn. Now, I never drove a 700hp car , but it seems to me that a 700hp car in a narrow road where 1 million people were estimated to be watching was pure irresponsability from the organization. I'm sorry for Joaquim and for the people that were hit that day.
still, that one was like 5 kilometers outside Portugal main capital, Lisbon. Those were really crazy rally times. Crowds everywhere here followed the rally every road every corner. I wonder times were same in other countrys big specials like this one at least. imo it would happen anywhere. Its just sad it had to happen for things to change... as always.
xiça peniko, so se pode dizer que ha gente muito estupida pa se meter nas orlas das estradas com carros tao potentes e tao previsilvelmente imprevisiveis... la diz o outro.. Portugal no seu melhor...
These cars are so powerfull and the people standing right in the road and some crazy fuckers crossing the road, that's just purely stupid!!! And know this year the accident right on the shake down!!! i got to admit... this year security is a lot better but let's just hope that that first accident doesn't fucks things up again!!! I wouldn't like to see the next rally of Portugal when I'm 40!!!
Personaly I get so pissed up with this kind of shit!!! I'm portuguese and the last time the WRC was in Portugal was precisly in the year I was born!!! I always wondered why the fuck didnt the WRC wouldn't come to Portugal but now I get it! It's the good old portuguese "i'm the man and I can dodge every thing" Crazy bunch of fuckers!!! No wonder the organization of WRC didnt want to came back to Portugal.

As a Portuguese journalist, I must say this. The dead were 2, mother and son. The police did nothing, because FIA didn't care. But the drivers were already afraid about the Group B Monsters and abandoned the rally to put pressure on FIA. 2 months later, in Corsica, Henri Toivonen said: "It's hard to keep up with the speed". He and his co-driver Sergio Cresto died few minutes later. 2 dead, as in Portugal. But there was a difference. At that time, FIA decided to ban Group B. That's the truth.
still, the portuguese crowd remains the best crowd ever on the WRC. no other country had so many fans as in Portugal whatching the event. and we are a small country with only about 10 million people, but as the commentor says, we are lunatic people (and suicidal too). that is what make us the greatest fans of the WRC.
the most incredible cars of the time, and the best drivers in the world driving in ways you couldn't even imagine. It must've been awesome, and being that close to something that stunning would've been impossible to resist. I would take the risk any day of the week, experiencing the vibe of the crowd, the noise, the speed... Get off your high horse
These cars were so light and so powerful people couldnt comprehend just how much respect they needed. Some of the last of the line RS200 fords produced nearly 700 horsepower and weighed less than a ton.
Yes, I agree they weren't the cleverest of people for standing there (I wouldn't have), but no-one DESERVES to die in the way that they unfortunately did.
As for shooting them - they've been dead for 21 years, what would shooting them acheive?
I agree with some of the responses, the last people that deserve criticism are those in the car. Why the commentator would suggest only those in the car know the truth...it's a rally! Natural Selection at it's finest, no sympathy, just a shame if the intelligent got caught up in mob mentality.
does that make GTR and nascar better? Group B in many ways was the peak for fan/driver interation. Mega speed, and as a fan you're right there with them, not hidden behind nets, fences, barriers... What happened was always going to happen, but that sortof thing will never be allowed to ever happen again. Group B was a moment, the pinnicle of motorsport, shame it had to end
a culpa reside na má organizaçao por parte de Portugal e na FIA, de nao ter locais de "bancada", a nossa GNR nada estava lá a fazer, Boa Sorte para este ano!
the wrc is not here since 2001 not since that accident.
that was a bit stupid from the portuguese crowd but as portuguese i'm proud because that was the reason our rally was considered the best in the world
Yes they were. Who in their right mind would stand right there on the road with cars going that fast? I'm not trying to blame the people who died, but they really shouldn't have been standing there..
if you look at any videos of groub b all the spectators are to close to the road it should of been dealt with sooner, the drivers were the best and in many minds, they still are
Joder la gente de esa epoca parecia retrasada.... en todos los rallys del grupo B pegados a la carretera y todos los coxes pasando follaos y casi rozando a la gente y no se apartaba ninguno...
as i see it it was the driver's fault he understeered after viring right and plowed through the crowd. its true however that spectators shouldn't be nowhere as near the road as they were. they were just like tire walls waiting to be hit.
you don't know anything that confirms your statement. Listen to all the film before saying crap like that. Joaquim Santos turned to dodge the spectators in the road. You can't see them in the film, but they were there. Im Portuguese and i know the whole story
If you watch the video carefully, he veers away from the spectators roughly 20-30 feet from the crowd he eventually hits. Even with advanced differentials, low weight, efficient brakes, there was no way to stop or control the car otherwise after steering clear of the first two.
No offence for southern european rallyfans, but u dont respect rallydrivers staying that close to the road. Or on the road. Driver could also bo killed by hitting tree fullspeed when avoidin these suicide maniacs..
if u see other group b rally movies u will see that was not only here in portugal but in all other countrys so u can say with dont respect rally drivers...and by the way it was 21 years ago so everything is diferent now...
This things happen... the portuguese croud is a very emotive one. I'm speaking by myself too, seeing the weak national championship I go completely crazy... we are mad for motorsports, and FIA knows it... they've taken the F1 and the WRC from us... now we have WRC back, but for how much longer? just until another one appears with some big money... that's what they want... they want money, not the good for the motorsports... FIA should ashame the motorsports lovers...
And cause of people like those crowds were the most emocional , thriling cars put to the museums of rallying history..I dont blame the drivers at all, they did their best and best they were..The blame is on the organisors of the rally and the crowd of their own stupidity to not take care of their self..
It was just crazy that the officials did nothing to prevent this crash. The spectators had to take a lot of the respobsability of what happened though. Group B got the blame and was banned the following year. Fans everywhere would never again see these supercars on the world stage. Damn shame..
In retrospect, its very easy to say what is right and what is wrong about someones judgement and error that day. But in a crowd of thousands and thousands, the mob mentality and excitement likely fuelled by the festive atmosphere, the adrenaline of the cars, and way MORE than likely booze inhibit a crowds capacity to make logical choices. Im sure at the time it seemed a fun idea to stand that close. No reason to bash the dead, is there?
it was this incident that made the fia restict the power of all wrc cars to 280bhp, a rule that still stands to this day. How taking away power saves lives i dont know. The cars are still STUPID quick. But hey as said above... you know the risk when you go to a rally and stand at the side of a stage. Sometimes even the best get it wrong. (R.I.P Richard Burns).
This waas not the incident that they made the changes for. The 300 bhp rule came after the death of Henri Toivonen & Seergio Cresto in Corica later that year. There had always been problems with the croweds on this event. They had no motor clubs to help run the event and the police were only there to close the road.
Group B would still be in action if there was more crowd control and if the Police could be fucked to do somthing about it. All they need to do is stand out of the way where the cars slide. It's the spectators fault at the end of the day.
I was six years old when that happened. I live a couple of KM away and had just seen them pass. Thousands came to see the rally. I guess they never thought it could happen, but it did. God rest their souls.
seriously would you stand that close to powerful cars doing sideways around corners. It was a tradgedy but fuck that i would be standing as far away as possible.

Yes portugal was horrific and yes perhaps the cars where too powerfull.
But, It is always the responsibility of the organisers to control the crowds!!! think of the before blaming ANYONE!!!!!!
Santos did all he could to avoid to crash of that I am sure.
and remember Henri would die on the tour de corse!!!!!
Please see this for what it is an awfull awfull episode in what was a golden time for rallying.

Its just sad it had to happen for things to change... as always.

That's the truth.
luismarcal 4 years ago
still, the portuguese crowd remains the best crowd ever on the WRC. no other country had so many fans as in Portugal whatching the event. and we are a small country with only about 10 million people, but as the commentor says, we are lunatic people (and suicidal too). that is what make us the greatest fans of the WRC.

These cars were so light and so powerful people couldnt comprehend just how much respect they needed. Some of the last of the line RS200 fords produced nearly 700 horsepower and weighed less than a ton.

scheisseimhirn 4 years ago
Oh, come on! That's really not necessary!
Yes, I agree they weren't the cleverest of people for standing there (I wouldn't have), but no-one DESERVES to die in the way that they unfortunately did.
As for shooting them - they've been dead for 21 years, what would shooting them acheive?
Please people, think before you post.

sl8734 4 years ago
I agree with some of the responses, the last people that deserve criticism are those in the car. Why the commentator would suggest only those in the car know the truth...it's a rally! Natural Selection at it's finest, no sympathy, just a shame if the intelligent got caught up in mob mentality.

Ever notice in GTR racing and Nascar there are buffer zones and barriers?
KrazyKali69 4 years ago
does that make GTR and nascar better? Group B in many ways was the peak for fan/driver interation. Mega speed, and as a fan you're right there with them, not hidden behind nets, fences, barriers... What happened was always going to happen, but that sortof thing will never be allowed to ever happen again. Group B was a moment, the pinnicle of motorsport, shame it had to end

if you look at any videos of groub b all the spectators are to close to the road it should of been dealt with sooner, the drivers were the best and in many minds, they still are

scotlander32 5 years ago
as i see it it was the driver's fault he understeered after viring right and plowed through the crowd. its true however that spectators shouldn't be nowhere as near the road as they were. they were just like tire walls waiting to be hit.
bucurelpacura 5 years ago
you don't know anything that confirms your statement. Listen to all the film before saying crap like that. Joaquim Santos turned to dodge the spectators in the road. You can't see them in the film, but they were there. Im Portuguese and i know the whole story
xmidt 5 years ago
If you watch the video carefully, he veers away from the spectators roughly 20-30 feet from the crowd he eventually hits. Even with advanced differentials, low weight, efficient brakes, there was no way to stop or control the car otherwise after steering clear of the first two.

CrovaxPT 5 years ago
In retrospect, its very easy to say what is right and what is wrong about someones judgement and error that day. But in a crowd of thousands and thousands, the mob mentality and excitement likely fuelled by the festive atmosphere, the adrenaline of the cars, and way MORE than likely booze inhibit a crowds capacity to make logical choices. Im sure at the time it seemed a fun idea to stand that close. No reason to bash the dead, is there?
RallyCat909 5 years ago
it was this incident that made the fia restict the power of all wrc cars to 280bhp, a rule that still stands to this day. How taking away power saves lives i dont know. The cars are still STUPID quick. But hey as said above... you know the risk when you go to a rally and stand at the side of a stage. Sometimes even the best get it wrong. (R.I.P Richard Burns).
ollylewin 5 years ago
This waas not the incident that they made the changes for. The 300 bhp rule came after the death of Henri Toivonen & Seergio Cresto in Corica later that year. There had always been problems with the croweds on this event. They had no motor clubs to help run the event and the police were only there to close the road.
rallyingtcp 5 years ago
i stand corrected! somebody knows there stuff!
ollylewin 5 years ago
Group B would still be in action if there was more crowd control and if the Police could be fucked to do somthing about it. All they need to do is stand out of the way where the cars slide. It's the spectators fault at the end of the day.
celliot 5 years ago
