  • i've got a video like this, only a lot smaller. there is a bigger setup that i'll be getting footage of soon though, good video by the way

  • I bought the second one and had problems viewing the first 5 minutes. choppy...

  • If I ever hit the lottery, I will be in the Guiness Book for the largest, most complex HO scale ever created.

  • Why do I have to live in a sucky trailer with just a circular track? I could have all this if I lived in a normal house!

  • @Showgirl7able Get up off of your ass, get a good education in a field that is highly marketable, and then roll up your sleeves, and prepare to work your ass off! Then, with a little bit of luck, you will start to see your retched life improve! But, until you give 10, don't expect 10-or even one. If God hates a coward, He loathes a whiner! AQlso, don't expect me to wipe your damned nose-I paid my dues, and earned what I have!

  • @RichieC1000 Dude take the tampon out and drink some chamomile tea! Must be that time of the month!

  • I dream of visiting your layout!

  • im more of an HO gauge person

how would you recommend installing a bridge over a body of water?

  • Sorry I meant secret.

  • I noticed you have a lot of videos about engines, but could you possibly make a video showing the whole layout and trains running? Or do you like keeping that a secrete? Great layout by the way. MTH scaletrax is the best out there ;)

  • hey Rich. What is the song used in this video? Did you get if from an online music library?

  • @GoldenCreekValleyRR The name is "Olympic" and is from SmartSound which came with my video editor PowerDirector. It is under the "Orchestral" category. You may be able to buy it on the SmartSound website. Rich

  • Ever try Mega Steam smoke fluid?

  • hey rich the layout is finally gone. I CAN"T WAIT TO BUILD A LAYOUT WITH SCALETRAX AND LARGE CURVES!!! I will use every tip from your dvd and not one from any else. your dvd is so percise and straight to the point that anyone can build a beautiful layout!!!!

  • i want to buy this DVD...how much is it?..and if u made more vid's i would like to buy those aswell....Great job..just Awsome!!!

  • Wow! Nice.

  • Great job looks like a great video to buy!

  • Perfect, 5 Stars !

  • Live Steam>*

  • Hope I can get my MTH 6x12 layout looking this real!

  • This is O Scale.................

  • what scale is this??

  • Ho scale I believe

  • It looks like O scale to me.

  • Yes why not make all video DVD and CD music free also.

Why does everyone want everything for nothing these days???

  • why don't make it free and let people download it?

  • @svinehunden LOL

  • @svinehunden nothing in this world is free anymore, save for evil looks :b

  • @svinehunden hahahahahahaaaaah

  • this layout is so good its not even funny. You guys should be worlds best model railroaders

  • Im gonna be checking everyday for the new preview- cant wait!!!!! I am using the pigment colors that you have used and my mountains are turning out great!!- exactly what i was looking for!!! Your tip for your cross-overs with DCS is a real help too!! Thanks

  • what software do you usew to make the videos

  • is this a dvd you made?

  • Yes.

  • When it comes time for me to build mine, I can only hope to come close to what these talented people have built!!!

  • Great video and great art work !!!!!!

    Try : treinbaan 3000

  • what is the music

  • Maybe you won't build one.

  • @Toytrainsontracks I don't know about you carsjjj4443, but it may be helpful in the future if you love them.

  • @carsjjj4443 shut up building its the damn part

  • proberly one of the best layout in the world

    5 stars

  • what is the engine behind the T1 at 0:16 seconds because i want to try and find one

  • The engine is Norfolk&Western Unshrouded J from MTH, product number 20-3058-1. It the same as the engine at 0:26 without the shroud. There are several places that still have them. Go to the MTH website "product locator" link and enter the number to find a list of dealers.

  • So.. for Scale Wheels ,all the wheels are the same size and on hi-rail at least 1 set of wheels is smaller than the others?

I just wanna make sure cuz I'm an operator too and I love pure realism.

And another thing, when running on scale wheels , does it require wider curves than how hi-rail handles it?

  • Hi-rail wheels are all the same size also, and have big flanges. hi-rail steamers & 3-axil diesels don't have flanges on the middle wheels. This allows them to negotiate tighter turns. Scale wheels require wider curves. For diesels, the min is O-72. Most steamers require even wider curves. I have NO scale wheel steamers because they require 54" radius, or O-108 curves. Also the smaller pilot and trailing truck wheels are smaller and have trouble through the hi-rail switch frogs.

  • check out my new video. MTH NKP Berkshire (2-8-4) nkp #765. it shows my railking engine modded and changed to look like your premier berkshire. it has a mars lights and a lima loco builders plate.

  • What type of train you run MTH, Lionel, #rd rail sunset models or what you run

  • Mostly MTH premier, some 3rd rail, and one Lionel (allegheny).

  • this is ripjump12's model railway profile check out the preview of goldencreek valley rr dvd. blackdiamond is the best and he helped me on my layout well his dvd did. but thanks

  • how long did the project take to build

  • It took 1 year to build out the room, drywall, ceiling, trains shelves, etc, then 3 years to get the layout finished. Go to my website and click on the OGR magazine cover on the bottom right. You can read my article about the history and making of the layout. I am nearly finished with my extension and new DVD. I wil have a new preview this fall.

  • AWSOME!

  • rip, Your too kind my friend. I checked out your layout again and I have to say nice work and nice rock walls! Keep up the good work.

Ivemer, All my MTH diesels are scale wheels, no steamers. The pilot wheels on steamers have some trouble. I can probably run a scale wheel steamer on my inside loop where it can pass through straight on one switch. The scale wheels look better than hi-rail, but thats it.

  • your welcome. but at 2:30 i couldnt tell if it was a model or real. that has to say that you are the best of the best

  • well every single thing on my layout was basically from you dvd. the mountain. rockwalls. my only question is that how do you make the inside of tunnels look real.

  • toytrainsontracks is the best model trian expert i know. he is soooo awsome. i wish my layout was like yours. by the way i wish mth whould come out with the nkp 587 for railking and premier.

  • vry nice layout :D

btw u run MTH on Scale Wheels?

if so, is it better than Hi-Rail?

  • well it adds realism

  • GUESS WHAT. IM COMING OUT WITH A FREE DVD ABOUT MY GOLDEN CREEK VALLEY RR. blackdiamond railway helped me soooo much on my layout. and for that i say thank you.

  • The way you compare real trains to the models is really nice.

  • IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT.... (HEY)...!

  • If money was no object and I had about 40 hours a week to kill.

  • no offence but you have too much time and money

    oh well

i am building my layout now and it will never be as good as that one thow , damn

i love the pistons fireing on steam engines

  • Too much money maybe......not.

  • I hate 3 rails!! but your layout is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cool you don't even notice!!! I'M WANTING MORE!!

  • mth sound sets is the bomb. yaaaaa, what computer program do you use for your videos.

  • Thanks. I use PowerDirector from Cyberlink. Just got the latest, version 7, which is much more stable than the previous versions. Note, some of the sounds are overlayed with real engine sounds. Not trying to fool anyone, just make the vids more realistic.

  • Don't have Atlas or Weaver engines. Lionel steam sounds have great base but wrong chuff rate. MTH sounds are good, and getting better with the newer engines. The latest diesels are excellent.

  • I bought this video about a month ago. After I first watched it i immediately began to tear up my layout and start over. This is such an inspirational video. I have watched it over and over. It has inspired the layout I am now building. Thank you so much!!!

  • Glad you like it. Sorry to cause you so much work. :) Building the layout is the fun part for me. Have fun!

  • your the man! this is reallly a killer vid thanks for posting it! i love it!!!

  • i wanna do somehing exactly like this. while the locomotives railroads and senery and everything will be realisty BN trains will operate on the same tracks as new BNSF trains. i mean bassicly fallen flag railroads and mega merger railroads plus some shortlines and a logging railroad all in my mind. it will be much much bigger than that layout. and this layout is awsome. how much did it cost?

  • wonderful layout,great work.

  • I have purchased your DVD around Thanksgiving and I've never put it down since. You gave me great tips and ideas for scenery and MTH's DCS. Just like watching drum vids make me want to drum, your layout does the same. You make me want to work on my layout even when i have to do homework instead. Looking foward to the expansion and construction web page. Hopefully another DVD?! Thanks again Rich. Happy Railroading!!! Check out my layout-in-progress!

  • New DVD is in the works!

  • HORAY!!!! any idea when it will be out? I looked at the extension. looks really cool!!! Another question: Do you use scale couplers on your locomotives and rolling stock?

  • how do you afford all that. man i would die to see you and this layout. you are amazing. check out my videos of my small 12 by 8 layout in railking mth. PLEASE RESPOND!!! RESPOND PLEASE

  • Thats what happens when you get an engineering degree and a masters. You should do the same. I saw your videos and see you are quite diverse and talented. It is also great to see you enjoy trains as well as all the other stuff like piano, Halo...etc. Your layout is AWESOME! You should be very proud. You are obviously very creative and creativity is a key to success. Rich.

  • thanks to you. your dvd helped make my layout possible. im planning to get some premier train cars for my layout. i want them to be present day train cars. what type of cars should i get for my small layout.

  • where can I order the video?

  • You can order the video through my website. The address is shown above in my info section. I can't type it here since Youtube filters out any web address. Thanks for the interest.

  • WOW!!!! Absolutely AWESOME!!!

  • wow! how long did it take to build?

  • The room took 1yr, and the layout took about 3yrs to build. Since then I have not done much except add string to my telephone poles and a few trackside items, (barrel, cars etc). I'm current building and filming an extension.

  • oh. wow. you are very cool. you got to tech me.

  • who ever owns this layout is a lucky son of a... well you get what I mean!

  • lol :)

  • the dream layout! beautiful

  • your video. its amazing. i got your dvd and wow and I flipped. I want to swicth my 0-31 curves to be 0-54

  • i have died and gone to heaven. this layout should be blessed. I am so frustarated on how people get lionel tubular or mth realtrax to look as if it is inside the road. i need help PLEASE!!!! Check out my layout. i'm only on the 1st step

  • Is that hornby your useing

  • THanks you have showen me some go way to build your railway like the hills was nothing i would of done

  • When I saw this article in OGR, I sold my HO stuff and started over with O gauge! I'm having more fun now, and won't go back! Nice job Rich!

  • WOW awesome dvd *5 :)

  • where is it lol i going to get moving truck and take our layout to my house. I like it so much =0

  • I hope its a big truck!

  • WOW!! Absolutely fantastic!

  • ill tell you what man, that is the nicest layout ive ever seen. The website as awsome too!. The only thing i would maybe add would be to weather the cars so they arent so shiny. Maybe its just the way the vidoes are im not sure. but awsome set man really cool!!

  • Thanks, glad you like it. I agree about the weathering and for my next DVD I plan to weather almost everything including the track, houses, trains, cars, etc.

  • AMAZING!! The comparison really shows how much realism is in this layout. Very Nice! I Like...

  • Just beautiful!

  • amazing thats just amazing :0

  • is this your layout?

  • Nick, thanks. This is my layout located in the basement. Check out my website to learn more, and read the OGR article on the home page. I've been trying to respond to this but it wouldn't accept it. I discovered it will not accept it if I type in a web address. My website address is located above under "About this video".

  • nice

  • are the sound in the csx like the real csx.

  • Yes, I used the same sounds from the real CSX engines for the models. I did that in several clips for fun. I wish the toy train sounds were that good.

  • I thought that was relly

  • When can we expect a second video?? Loved the first one!!!

  • Thanks, Josh. I have every intention of doing another, however, its a lot of work and takes time to do it right. I have a goal of producing another for this fall, but we'll have to see how it goes. Thanks for the interest. Rich.

  • For those of you who have been here before, this is a new rendition of two previous videos, which combines the train action and construction previews into one. The big difference is that it is now "letterboxed" so the video is no longer stretched vertically.
