You're significantly older than me, so surely you know that guitar playing isn't all about sizing up other players and finding aspects of their playing you don't like?
it's actually really good to practice playing straight eight notes, esp for beginners, cause then your flow becomes so good you'll be able to stop and start at any time.
some of the greatest jazz exercises in jazz guitar . yes theyre hard to play at first but stick with it and youll be sounding like joe pass..these videos are awesome...

@Naardis plus if you can get flavor just through accents then you are already ahead of the game...
victor wooten says that a self respecting musician should be able to make a person bob their head while playing up and down a scale.
