remake? ma che dici?tutti i registi di questo mondo hanno tentato infelicemente solo François Truffaut ne ha fatto uno carino.Questo è un capolavoro assoluto
@ime239 Just curious, but what 'old movies' have you seen that make you think that way? ... and why would anybody want to REMAKE this? Do you even know what it's about? If you did, you would see the illogic in trying to reproduce the film that Fellini created. Do your research before you carelessly brush off legends! But if film isn't all that important to you, than don't take the time to try to immerse yourself into the world of cinema. Cool?
I think that this kind of trailer was made for the US. If you see an interview of Fellini just few days before of the FIRST launch of 8 1/2 in Italy you can see that the journalist is a bit disappointed because Fellini didn't want to tell the story of the movie. Italians thoughts it was a merchandising strategy, and only after they viewed the film they realised why he couldn't tell the story: becaue there is no story!!So I think this trailer was made for foreign countries.
Fellini was a master! This was completely done for the outrageous, the unucustomed to the masterpieces he created. The people who were lack of restrictions. Does the word Democracy have a meaning to this? I especially love "La Dolce Vita". Very unusual, contemptible. Master of his work.. shame he is gone. The great ones seem to depart from our world. There are some that are quite talented as he... but can we name them?
best movie ever ?! yeah right! you guys have to watch more comtemporary foreign films first . i can name you at least 50 movies which are better than this.
@tool619 it's only a matter of taste, for example you think the 400 blows it's the best movie ever, but i think even in the nouvelle vague it isn't better than some godard work, I think 8 1/2 is the film of film, it's cinema inside the cinema and you can't say that about too many films
@igougiugi As a matter of fact, i HAVE indeed watched several Godard films including Breathless and Alphaville. Breathless was his finest film, but still nowhere near the 400 blows. You can view my top 10 films in my channel.
@tool619 When someone talks about the best of anything, that person is usually being subjective. That being said, if you named 50 movies that you think are better than this one, it probably wont mean much to everyone else.
@Redgrant80 Thank you, you won me this time. But i respect your opinions, and to be honest with you, i loathe Fellini, for reasons which you may disagree with. Let's just put it this way, I think Fellini's work is pretentious.
Can anybody of you tell me how Fellini could get at this incredible sharpness and b/w contrast in this film. It's a miracle to me. I have seen nothing similar with digital video, neither SD nor HD. Was it has personal genius to get there or was it the quality of the equipment. Please kindly reply me because my preference is monocrome flim and photography, using digital technology. Sincerely hope that anybody finds this comment ...
@ipublica I'm not sure but I know the french New Wave films have a similar incredible quality of picture and sharpness to them, and Breathless (a New Wave film) was shot with a handheld camera so there couldn't of been that incredible of equipment I would think.
@ripcurl979 Hm, what you say suggests perhaps that it's really the man behind the camera who makes it good and bad. That's surely true, a good master remains a master even when using bad tools. I also tend to think it may be the fact of using only fixed lenses, not zoom lenses that makes for this incredible detail. This might be the reason why professionals now are using 35mm lenses again and mount them on DSLRs (using adapters).
@ipublica Well idk much about lenses but I will check that out, lighting is surely also a big factor, but like so much of Breathless and other French films are shot outdoors and even in the middle of streets and the shots move such distances (they're long shots) I'd be suprised if they were really using any lighting other than natural for at least large parts of the films.
@ripcurl979 Yes, for sure, natural light gives the best results, except you use very fast fix lenses such as the new Voigtlander 0.95 prime lens, perhaps the fastest lens ever built (890$), there are adapters for most cameras (179$). In the past, cine lenses were really heavy, so heavy that you couldn't shoot hand-held. Among the best right now for high-end shooting are perhaps those from RED. I actually save money and plan to buy a RED SCARLET in perhaps 2 years (check out red.com). Fantastic.

This was, IMHO, one of the most pretentious pieces of trash I have ever sat through. It was as if somebody collected all the outtakes and spliced them together. A complete waste of time.
If you mean the trailer, I won't necessarily disagree. As far as I am concerned any trailer over 1 minute is a waste of time. I don't need character development in a trailer. The trailer is just random scenes with words over it. If all I knew of this film was the trailer I probably wouldn't watch it.
If you mean the film itself, then you are an idiot.
I just watched this movie, and while I really liked (its better than Nine in about every way) it, the plot was explained in such an extremely complicated way that near the end I was almost completely lost. What was that mindfuck of an ending all about?
@duckman531 OK thanks. I did think it was something like that when his wife said she could now see that he couldn't live without them. I'm 31 and I've seen a LOT of films but none like this. I mean even the wall I could kind of understand, but this one, I couldn't tell when he was daydreaming or dreaming or what. I'm sure that after veiwing it a few times I will see more clearly. Thanks for the explanation!
That's why films like this one are so good, KYSNB. Because with every viewing they reveal more and more of their mystery. They just don't make 'em like this anymore!

This movie is talked about to a great deal, but not by many Americans because, quite frankly, American Cinema has been largely crap for 30+ years. I have a query - In the scene where Luisa walks out on the hero at the screen test being watched , just after she leaves and before the hero leaves in a car, two women whose test results are screened are HUMMING a song, a rhumba (?) , it is a famous number , can someone help.I would like to know its title....
@mypenisandballs this film is about a film director's frustration of not having found inspiration to finish his new film. Don't get me wrong, I liked it. But one of the greatest films of all time? The only reason I even heard of it was because it was on a list of the greatest movies of all time. Exactly how influential is this? I mean, I've never seen it quoted or parodied or referenced or even mentioned. There's just nothing. The film was alright, but it just seemed like a normal film to me. One of those you watch, shrug your shoulders, and move on with your life. I guess I just held it to a higher standard.
I can't believe I didn't notice it before. He killed himself. I didn't even notice it. I saw him take a gun out and I heard a gunshot, but then he was alive in the next scene, so I assumed I must have been mistaken. Oh man, that adds so much more depth to the story. I didn't even realize he had done it. Wow, I feel pretty damn stupid.
Methinks only certain people can appreciate films like this one. Not to sound arrogant or anything, but you have to understand a good story, well-developed characters, etc. And of course it helps to be a fan of films in general; To have a deep appreciation for how one is created. Which is fitting for this story - understanding the lead character's desires. Read some reviews about this film and you'll see exactly why it is looked upon as it is. You might find even more that you missed. :)
Yeah, I'm starting to like this film a little bit better now that I understand it more. It just didn't "flow" as good as other movies do, making the plot incoherent at times and because of that, some parts bored me. I did like it though, don't get me wrong.
After viewing this film you can see where all the directors for the past 50 years have been lifting their imagery and camera movements. This is one of those textbook films that every director must see. What a gorgeous and poetic collection of images and emotions. One of the greatest films ever made.
8 1/2 is quite possibly one of the best films ever made.
I'm a HUGE fan of Fellini and have many other personal favourites from his extensive works orf art. But 8 1/2 is in my opinion, Fellini at the pinnacle of his best.
You can tell straight away from the trailler that NINE is after 8 1/2... so why is there so little reference to Fellini's masterpiece??? And isn't it a bit arrogant to kind of say that your movie is that 1/2 bit better by naming it Nine? As if it was meant to be a better finished product.... when it's merely something like a translation.. from one form to another and then once again (Fellini film/Italian movie -> Broadway production -> American mainstream cinema/ musical movie)?
@vannieoli Nine the movie is the cinema adaption of Nine the musical (which also gained Tony Awards), the songs were majority from the original musical it self. Also, everybody knows that Nine (in general) was adapted from 8 1/2, and we are ohh so proud of it. blame it on the people who made the broadway adaption. I'm sorry but, majority of broadway musicals were from classic books and films under a different name. It's not a single bit arrogant.
this is amazing footage. I wasn't even born in the 60's but I find the movies and the music fascinating. This was a great movie, reminds me of BLOWUP.. great movie. I loved Bicycle Thief.. didn't we all have to study that in film school? I loved La Dolce Vita... terrific. It makes me very proud to be an Italian.........
This picture was the first to be shown on New York station WNBC-TV's "Saturday Film Festival" on its debut date of Sept. 17, 1966. It would be shown three more times on this prestigious showcase (which switched nights in 1967 and became the "Sunday Film Festival"), the last being on Aug. 19, 1972. (This series got started after WNBC acquired film packages from Embassy, Walter Reade, Allied Artists and a Warner Bros. off-network.)
i saw this movie some time ago. i didnt get it. but ill give it another try. i might ask the criterion edition of this movie for my birthday. its pretty cheap on amazon.
It's about a famous director who is trying to finish a movie, but is suffering from writer's block. The film bounces between what is really going on, and what is going on in his head. Making things worse are all of the people who have an opinion on what he should be doing and what kind of film it should be. Plus, his personal life is a complete mess. He knows he wants to make a movie that says something about that, but nobody else seems to think that would make a good movie. It's all very meta.
True that homie. Check out my web page and you will see the influence this film has had on me. I love this movie like crazy. It was the inspiration for my first music video.
It's probably the best introduction you can get to Fellini. I think it's his best, but City of Women, Amarcord, Roma, La Dolce Vita, Nights of Cabiria, I Vitelloni, The Swindle, and Juliet of the Spirits are all great films.
Variety Lights, The White Sheik, The Degenerates, and And The Ship Sails On are probably his least well done.
Anyone who has to ask this is obviously a bit dim....if you consider MAGNOLIA a "masterpiece", well......(think P.T. Anderson is a great filmmaker and MAGNOLIA an extremely is extremely underrated film - but in no way a "masterpiece")
what is the song at the second half of the trailer

@mikeellerbeck To call this a film about film is missing the point totally.. Aside from the fact that aesthetically it's flawless.

Just wait until you get like 30 years older. Thats what I realized.
But I did love La Dolce Vita first time I saw it.

After viewing this film you can see where all the directors for the past 50 years have been lifting their imagery and camera movements. This is one of those textbook films that every director must see. What a gorgeous and poetic collection of images and emotions. One of the greatest films ever made.

"Nine" has the same story of "8 1/2" so it's a musical version of Fellini's film..i think that "Nine" will be awesome
giovypeas 2 years ago
@giovypeas Nine was a broadway adaption, the movie is adapted from the musical and the musical was adapted from 8 1/2.
theraychily 2 years ago
8 1/2 is quite possibly one of the best films ever made.
I'm a HUGE fan of Fellini and have many other personal favourites from his extensive works orf art. But 8 1/2 is in my opinion, Fellini at the pinnacle of his best.
leftcoastskeptic 2 years ago 9
You can tell straight away from the trailler that NINE is after 8 1/2... so why is there so little reference to Fellini's masterpiece??? And isn't it a bit arrogant to kind of say that your movie is that 1/2 bit better by naming it Nine? As if it was meant to be a better finished product.... when it's merely something like a translation.. from one form to another and then once again (Fellini film/Italian movie -> Broadway production -> American mainstream cinema/ musical movie)?

@vannieoli i think ur tripping all over your own esoteric words.... calm down and relax,,, and just watch the one good film.
CHUCKLOVES1969 2 years ago
vannieoli - anyone with any portion of a workable brain knows that no one can even begin to do justice to Maestro Fellini in any sort of fashion.
Let go of the vapid brained. We know better don't we?
leftcoastskeptic 2 years ago
@vannieoli Nine the movie is the cinema adaption of Nine the musical (which also gained Tony Awards), the songs were majority from the original musical it self. Also, everybody knows that Nine (in general) was adapted from 8 1/2, and we are ohh so proud of it. blame it on the people who made the broadway adaption. I'm sorry but, majority of broadway musicals were from classic books and films under a different name. It's not a single bit arrogant.
theraychily 2 years ago
@vannieoli It was decided title to be Nine because of the musical addition, good fight though.

The movie "Nine" (not Tim Burton's "9", which is a totally different movie) is a musical version of 8 1/2.
kikiteka 2 years ago
I just saw 8 1/2 on TCM today for the first time and said, "woah, this looks like Nine seems to be."

this is amazing footage.

I'm so sure I read that they were going to make a '9', but Tim Burton has stolen that film title!

There is a "Nine" coming out that almost seems similar but "9" is the animated Tim Burton movie

Nine is based on the broadway musical of the same name.

I've been blown away by this film masterpiece.
All the women in this film are incredible.
Marcello Mastroianni's acting is the best I've seen in many a year and he had me totally believing that he was Frederico Fellini!
5 stars all round!

@battie07 It's not exact, it's about the most respected poll among film fans but at the end of the day it is a matter of opinion.

@LiamCrowley1990 I'm just being a pedantic, opinionated jerk. Anyway most of us can all agree it's pretty damn good.

Every modern day film maker has most likely taken notes from some of Fellini's films. This is his most famous and most influential.

True that homie. Check out my web page and you will see the influence this film has had on me. I love this movie like crazy. It was the inspiration for my first music video.

Is this the best one for someone who hasnt seen any Fellini?
realeimperobritannic 3 years ago
It's probably the best introduction you can get to Fellini. I think it's his best, but City of Women, Amarcord, Roma, La Dolce Vita, Nights of Cabiria, I Vitelloni, The Swindle, and Juliet of the Spirits are all great films.
Variety Lights, The White Sheik, The Degenerates, and And The Ship Sails On are probably his least well done.

What makes this film a "masterpiece"?
brushstrokesrock 3 years ago
Anyone who has to ask this is obviously a bit dim....if you consider MAGNOLIA a "masterpiece", well......(think P.T. Anderson is a great filmmaker and MAGNOLIA an extremely is extremely underrated film - but in no way a "masterpiece")
