Demjanjuk was in the Red Army, where during that time (40`s) atrocious conditions pevailed. He ended up as a POW and and probably would have been killed by the Germans if he had not become a HIWI (German= "Person willing to help") in the POW camp. And from there, there was no way back. Personally I think he saved his life. Period
