A masterpiece. Brian thank you! How they harmonized and brought this together is amazing. Brian was so kicked down and I am so glad that the artist was listend to. There are so many that cut down what they just cannot stand back and envision. Brian you warm the hearts of so many. Thank you Beach Boys, You have bestowed such a wonderful gift to your fans and mankind!
My wife and I took a seven hour road trip up to our son college this fall we listen to this horse-shit CD "Smiles'" about a hour into it I hit the reject and threw this fucking disk out the window. In spite of what Bill Hicks says Dope can cause some bad bad music..
@leichenzedeichen I think Van Dyk Parkes had a bit to do with out. But Mike did contribute "I'm pickin' up Good Vibrations, she's givin' me excitations!" Very deep.
@leichenzedeichen No. Mike wrote most of the lyrics .... OF GOOD VIBRATIONS. Otherwise, he didn't write a single word for SMiLE. And then Brian replaced Mike's lyrics in favor of Tony Asher's for the song's recording on his finished version of the album in 2004.
About ten years ago Brian was asked about Smile, he said the masters were destroyed. I imagine he lied because it was just too painful to think of them.
@bhertzbe Yeah, apparently Brian said it ("the tapes were destroyed") in '99, but a year later said, "the tapes are in a safe place" lol. (Maybe some of the MIXDOWNS were destroyed.)
I wonder to what extent the proliferation of SMiLE outtake bootlegs--and such popular compilations as the "Purple Chick" version of SMiLE--available on the internet served as a motivating factor in the release of this masterpiece? Maybe I'll know more after watching the rest of these great videos.
Anyone mention Olivia Tremor Control? They have a fondness for big blocks of harmony as well. I am sure you haters will think they are terrible tool..Stop wasting your time posting how much another band sucks and just focus on the music YOU like. We all have different opinions.
Whoever is posting with regards to Animal Collective is missing the obvious fact that a lot of the harmonies/vox in both Animal Collective and Panda Bear records are extremely similar to what Brian was doing. If you can't hear that you have no business speaking about music.
MONO sucks, and I hope Capitol is holding out for another release cos I would gladly pay 140 $ again for a stereo mix of the album. If Actung Baby is worthy of a 10 disc
expanded anniversary edition (!!!?) SMiLE should be worth re-issue in stereo, like Pet Sounds.
The Beatles will always be my favourite band, but Smile shits all over Sgt Peppers.
What a shame this was never released in 67. It would've given the beatles a run for their money. Smile sounds fully realised even in its unfinished form where as Sgt peppers seems lacking in direction.
@briney1973 : Some critics who have heard these lost tracks a while back stated that it was evident this was better than Abbey Road. I'm a big Beatles fan. But Brian Wilson stunned the world with Pet Sounds. I agree that had this been released in 1967 it would have topped Sgt Peppers and that's an extremely hard thing to do.
Yeah, but Abbey Road is not comparable to it, the beatles long went away from their psychedelic phase before abbey road, rather imagine, if the Boys would have released smile, i mean after pepper the beatles reigned supreme without any real competition, imagine smile coming out and imagine then the beatles seeing the competition getting themsefles together, imagine a full front united beatles hwilte album.
It's shameless to see Mike change his tune with a straight face when he was likely the biggest factor in tearing down Brian's self-esteem and confidence in finishing what was obviously a vivid work of dream-like musical genius. Ahead of its time or not, I wish he was 10% as visionary as Brian in recognizing he was onto something very special.
Either way I've been ecstatic listening to these songs, even unfinished it's a masterpiece in every which way I'll appreciate forever. Thank you Brian!
@pluginhoney AMEN! I was reading about the sessions for not only smile but "Pet Sounds" as well and Love was against the direction Brian was trying to go on that album as well. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Brian made the biggest mistake ever by caving in to Love and the record label. I wish he would have finished the "Smile" with or without The Beach Boys as it truly was and is a fabulous piece of work.
@pluginhoney No truer words ever spoken... Everyone involved with recording those tracks knew that Mike disliked Pet Sounds and really did not like Smile, arguing that the music was non-sense... Short sighted fool that he is.
@deweypug I think everyone knows Mike has only been in it for the money and riding the nostalgia gimmick for decades now. He doesn't care about art or music nearly as much as wringing dry the Beach Boys name, and although he should be scorned for dismissing Pet Sounds and probably ruining Smile and Brian's confidence in his own music, it's his revisionist and take-credit-for-everything bullshit that should be scorned even more. He's just extremely unlikable.
- I love the Beatles, but you have to admit that Brian had just as much talent if not more than they did. The Beatles had both John AND Paul to write songs and music- with the Beach Boys is was basically just Brian doing EVERYTHING- writing the songs AND music. It was just him with a little bit of help from Parks. I have to say that Brian is the more talented one. Only because he was like a one man band. He did it all.
the stuff about brian being a genius is a jerk off, you could say it about any musician ever. if you listen to the sessions you'll always know when a take is the master, and you'll always know what went wrong 99% of the time. the thing is he had no idea what these songs would sound like when being played by an ensemble but still managed to arrange something incredible. THAT'S where genius comes in.
I remember how blown away I was when I first heard Brian Wilson's 2004 version of "Smile." No words can describe what it's like hearing "Smile" with the original Beach Boys vocals!
Aside from Brian (naturally), the rest of them are the most disingenuous people imaginable. You've got Jardine raving about Heroes & Villains as his favourite, yet he made fun of that song when it came out. Same as Love who, now that he's getting a royalty check from the album's release, suddenly praises the album to the high heavens. The whole thing reeks.
IF YOU ARE new to this music, and you are interested in new music, I can not urge you strongly enough to get SMiLE and listen to it. It is quite simply, the most ambitious, most far-out, most beautiful and greatest recording of all pop-rock.
A glorious peak from the time (1966) when advance and experimentation and consciousness expansion was blowing in the cultural wind. This is the high-water mark -- the place where the great wave broke and turned back on itself...
After listening to this whole box set (took me three days to get through the whole thing), I can empathize a bit with the other guys, just a little. Mike Love is Mike Love, what are you gonna do? I could see the other guys saying, "Brian....this is great and all, but where are you GOING with all of this?!" I can see a reason for genuine concern. But they should have trusted Brian and because they were afraid of not having a "hit" they lost their creditability.
How can stupid Mike Love sit there and say that SMiLE had brilliant tracks and brilliant lyrics? He was the MAIN reason that album got killed. Surf Rock was dead in '67, and he couldn't get over it. Old man trying to re-write history.
@JakeMiller21 "(Mike Love) was the MAIN reason (Smile) got killed". Are you serious? Yeah, he played a part. And so did the drugs, the pressure, pressure from Capitol, and the fact that he just couldn't piece it together. Brian bears no responsibility for the failure to compete his record? It's all Mike Love's fault? Give me a break. I don't know why it's a requirement to hate Mike Love in order to be a Brian Wilson fan.
@timmyc359 Hahaha, Brian was the dominant songwriter and was trying to compete with what The Beatles were writing. How well did those albums after Pet Sounds sell? Seems like when Brian stepped back, The Beach Boys began to release weak, hitless albums. I never said it was all Mike Love's fault. Ofcourse Brian's problems were a factor, but Mike Love was jealous and could not collaborate on the complex material that Brian was writing with Tony Asher & Van Dyke Parks.
I know Love is singing the albums praises now, I guess thats something. But from everything I've heard he did nothing but progessively give Brian Wilson a hard time starting as early as 1965's LP Summer Days (and Summer Nights) on forward to SMiLE, which recieved his most vehement opposition.
I suppose its better late than never. Either way Im enjoying the heck out of this masterpiece and Im so happy its been released for the world to hear! :]
@HughHoyland1 : Anything that strayed from the "formula" Mike carped about it. He was jealous because he wasn't writing the lyrics on Smile. In My Room wasn't penned by Mikey, either. Brian wanted the lyrics to progress past the beach, hot dogs, caramel corn and cotton candy. Baby's need formula. Brian wanted to get into the meat and potatoes. Mikey's lyrics just couldn't cut it.
@pmoyer50 Mike wasn't jealous; he really did hate the lyrics. I think his concerns about a change of direction were valid; an established act is taking a risk by deviating from the formula to this degree--it might work; it might not. They didn't have the benefit of hindsight like we do. Having said that, Brian did the right thing by growing and expanding musically--the public's tastes were changing, and Pet Sounds & Smile were his answer to that.
This was Brian and Van Dyke's masterpiece ahead of its time all the way, Mike Love has no real place to praise it when it's common knowledge his fervent opposition to this musical direction and lyrics was perhaps the biggest factor in its shelving and maybe even Brian's loss of confidence. Who knows how much Smile could have changed music as we know it if only it saw its proper release at the time and the people around Brian were only 10% as visionary as he was?
Mike Love is the biggest liar! According to all sources, he HATED Smile! His opposition to it was probably the biggest reason for its non-appearance in 1967. Why is he raving about it now???
I'm going to invent a time machine. Just so I can go back in time and tell Brian to stick with it. Even if he had to release it himself. This would've been the best album in the history of the world. It's so sad he never finished it.
Amazing. Brian, you are a beautiful genius, never forget that. If only Mike Love weren't in the equation, who knows how much more awesome (if possible) this could have been.
@TDavis7395 Sorry, IMO it trumps Rubber Soul, EASLY. It equals Revolver as far as artistic vision. I honestly cant say it does the same with Sgt Pepper, maybe no album can. But who knows what B Wilson would have come up with in response if he'd been able to stick with it. And I guarantee music scholars will talk of it as well as the RS, R, SP 50 years from now. :]
@HughHoyland1 Sgt Pepper is a set of thematically related songs akin to Pet Sounds. It cannot compare to SMiLE, with it's interchangeable modular sections. We are way beyond 'songs' here and into a music that is still ahead of it's time 45 years later. NOTHING the Beatles did can touch it. Their influence was spent 30 years ago;
this radical avant-garde pop is STILL influencing new music today. See Animal Collective or Panda Bear.
@anothercountyheard Oh brother. This Smile better than Pepper stuff has got to stop. Both are great albums, both are legendary , ok? The only difference is that one made it to the dance on time and changed music history, the other one was late by 43 years due to unfortunate cimcumstances, but a masterpiece (albeit an unfinished one) nonetheless as well.
@sjdrifter72 Sgt Pepper didn't change music history. All of the Beatles songwriting talent together doesn't equal 1/2 of Brian's genius. They always needed George Martin --- Brian was a one -man show. He had the voice, the vision, the musicianship, the songwriting talent, the balls to pull off a record that makes the Beatles most ambitious work seem positively ordinary by comparison. And I'm speaking as someone who was convinced Beatles were supreme ---- until I discovered Brian...
your on drugs pal....brian is ....uhh was talented but by 1967 he was dried up and has been riding that wave of creativity he had from 62-67 for almost 50 years now...
smile is way over rated and has loads of crap and by 67 brian was passe....he was being passed by....by the beatles, cream, hendrix, the doors stones, the who, creedance, simon and garfunkle and then by 68 you had led zep ....
brian couldnt handle the competition and folded up his tent and became a zombie.
@sjdrifter72 Unfinished? All that was needed was editing and assembly -- and now we have it. Proof of something extraordinary, something so radically different in conception from other rock records that 45 years after the fact it is still unmatched. Stringing song fragments together like A Day In The Life or the b-side of Abbey Road is quite different from the modular concept of the SMiLE music. The rock music of the '60s is something special, and sitting on the very top of the heap is Brian.
@anothercountyheard2 Dude....GET OFF IT. Really! How dare you try and troll this comment forum and start arguments. What would Brian say about your comments? Ever thought about THAT? You're out of line man. Brian would NEVER, EVER put down The Beatles or "Sgt. Pepper." You do know that one of the nails in the coffin was when Brian heard "Strawberry Fields Forever" on the car radio and he had to pull the car over because he was so blown away.
@MattHatter I am not trolling at all bragh, these are sincere opinions. I'll go further and say this -- fuck John Lennon. He's the most over-rated person in rock history. He never had a sincere belief or conviction. What you call an argument, I call conversation. How dare you challenge my right to speak? I grew up with the Beatles, have their every recording. Only when matured did I appreciate Brian, whose music leaves the Beatles in the dust. Pepper is now de-throned. SMiLE is the greatest LP.
@anothercountyheard2 O.K., maybe you're not trolling, maybe your just an asshole. And hey, I agree with you about John Lennon....TO A DEGREE. I don't put John on no Ghandi pedestal like others do. I know better that he could be an egocentric prick and he basically broke Paul's heart in those final days of The Beatles. You have every right to speak and put your foot in your mouth as much as you want! But you haven't "matured" at all if you're gonna pit The Beatles against Brian.
@anothercountyheard2 Hey... no need for bad words yeah? I love Smile and Sgt. Pepper. though I am mainly Beatles fan.I adore SMiLE. But well. I am ahead of people like you who think this rival way.. I just enjoy good music.
@anothercountyheard While I agree that SMiLE is on another level, I simply cant deny that Sgt Pepper is as well. Pepper takes me on a journey every time I hear it. Its almost a self contained world unto itself.
But on the flip side so is SMiLE, it does the same thing to me, just in a different way. My hats off to both groups for creating such masterpieces! :]
@TDavis7395 You're stuck in the past, or you have no concept of what avant garde is. Brian Wilson has more currency than any Beatles music. He's more influential now than ever -- a whole new genre -- the most dynamic and developmental one -- Chillwave -- is linked directly to his influence.
You are in the boat with Mike Love -- you just don't get SMiLE. You've probably never heard of Animal Collective or Panda Bear.
@anothercountyheard2 ...please don't ever mention Animal Collective on this video ever again. I don't care if I agree that Wilson is astounding, they're the worst act in "independent" music today.
Of course, I'm sure you just listen to whatever Pitchfork shoves down your throat.
@ZyxthePest omg Of all the asinine comments I have ever seen on Youtube, this is without a doubt the very dumbest ever. I am not a fan of P4K, I never go there. I heard about Animal Collective on NPR from Robert Christgau the critic for the New York Times, and they are the best example of the enduring influence of Brian and the Boys, and the most important artist in music today.
Brian's influence lasted through decades of power-pop, new wave, and pop-punk before Animal Collective started jacking off to Pet Sounds and decided to shit on it's legacy by associating themselves with it. All AC does is rehash one beat over a falsetto.
Try listening to Big Star, Matthew Sweet, or Linus Of Hollywood before you even think of calling AC the new Beach Boys.
@ZyxthePest Big Star, Matthew Sweet, or Linus Of Hollywood = pedestrian everyday working mans pop rock. Not innovators. Sorry. Panda Bear is mentioned in the albums liner notes btw as an example of SMiLE's enduring influence
Yeah, I'm sure the record label is also aware that hipsters would eat this record up. Hence his inclusion.
When you get Panda Bear's cock out of your ear, you should try listening to real music. Those three aren't even a percentage of the music that's kept Brian's spirit around. There's no way in hell you can even think of crediting AC as the "long-awaited" return of the Beach Boys. You simply don't understand the progression of music through decades, at all.
@ZyxthePest Okay, first of all don't be such a prick. Animal Collective are one of the few amazing artists around and keeping 60's psychedelia alive. "Merriweather Post Pavilion" is a masterpiece, but in an incredibly different way than "SMiLE".
While they are obviously influenced by Brian Wilson, their music has way more in common with Syd Barrett and is completely different from The Beach Boys. Not fair to turn this into a battle. I'll continue being a fan of both.
The Beach Boys, as well as the Beatles, the Hollies, and the Zombies or any other band that may come up in this conversation were pop bands. They may have employed techniques that were popular in the other genre, but I would never call them psychedelic.
Pop isn't a bad term, but to say Animal Collective is honoring the Beach Boys and keeping that kind of music alive is a slap in the face to four decades of pop musicians.
@ZyxthePest The Beach Boys and The Zombies were more sophisticated pop with elements of psychedelia mixed in. "SMiLE" is a bit more obvious considering the eccentric structure, and it's a very psychedelically-influenced album. Brian Wilson was a huge fan of of psychedelic music and obviously was using lots of cannabis and acid around that time.
@ZyxthePest The Beatles definitely released some of the most psychedelic songs, though. The obvious, trippy-layered psychedelia that artists like Hendrix and Pink Floyd were putting out. That's more like what "Merriweather Post Pavilion" is like. Very LSD-drenched music. I think the lyrics are one of the strong points, though. Very modest and insightful.
Animal Collective are completely different from the Beach Boys, though, and Radiohead sound nothing like The Beatles.
@TheOneartist On top of that, Mariweather Post Pavilion is missing key elements of what made Brian's or any other amazing artist from that decade's work amazing. The first being lyrics. Coherent ones at that. All they do is use falsettos and terrible harmonies.
This is the same problem I have when people call Radiohead the new Beatles. There's absolutely no correlation beyond indie popularity.
@ZyxthePest Also I'm a guy who mostly listens to 60's and 70's music. I could care less what the indie community thinks. Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes. They're brilliant bands regardless of time.
But no, I don't agree with the sentiment that Animal Collective are the new "Beach Boys". Yeah, their harmonies may be influenced by Brian Wilson, but the music is more "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"-ish. Animal Collective are the new Animal Collective. That's it.
@Alexbandits Pet sounds is far superior to Revolver or Sgt Pepper. And this versión of Smile is the best Pop abulm Ever Made, no metter what or who says, this is perfection. Period.
And then the Bealtes would have outpasted it again, i mean after pepperr came out and SMiLE didn#t they reigned supreme with no real competiton, imagine SMiLE coming out and forcing them to get together for their next album, imagine what a united beatles front white album could have been like.
Right as I'm watching this on the computer in the living room, "I Get Around" is being used on television for a Swiffer-Sweeper commercial. How ironic is THAT?! Kinda full circle for me. My first introduction to The Beach Boys back in the early 1980's was "Good Vibrations" on the Sunkist Soda ad. And it's because of both "Pet Sounds" and "SMiLE" that I eventually realized The Beach Boys were one of the most important bands of American rock and roll.
sooooo....let the other beach boys explain why they didn't want this album to come out in the 60's. its a shame. they thought it was "too weird". LONG LIVE BRIAN WILSON.
@Mozart1220 : Mike sure did an 180 degree turn. Now he's praising it? To think that this could have been released in 1967 and instead the world got Smiley Smile.
@Mozart1220 : Just recently Mike was quoted as insinuating that the Wilson - Parks song lyrics were no good. Now he's saying how wonderful Wonderful is. He is a hypocritical bastard. In 1967 Dennis was the most supportive of Brian. I don't know about the rest of the band except for the Mikey factor.
@pmoyer50 From what I have read, Carl was skeptical, but wanted to please Brian, but when Mike balked, he always followed Mike because it was easier than listening to him complain. Al always liked what Brian did because he knew it would be great in the end.
The "Holy Grail" of Rock has been issued, thank God! For us who'd stuck around all these years, this is great news! Never thought this would ever happen,so THANK YOU Brian,Mike,Al,and Bruce! From a Long-Time Beach Boys fan,I send my congrats to you! Multi-Platnium and Grammy Winner? WHY NOT!? It deserves it!
I'm not gonna get on Mike Love here. He's a singer, for god sakes. Singers are stubborn as concrete...they may detest something for years, give it a spin out of nowhere, then end up liking it.
@jgworkstation It's already out in some parts of the world. Australia has it right now. The UK gets it on Monday. Bottom line it's already been released.
The Smile album with the Beach Boys name on it FINALLY!!! being released after 44 years. All I can say about that is WOW!!!! I mean Brian finishing the album with his band and going on tour performing that music live was huge. But this is even bigger!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Overall, I don't care for it. Its Brian's drugged out music written when he was on alot of drugs. I'd rather hear songs about California, Surfin and Summer Fun.
Mike Love had it right when he said, 'Brian...don't f**k with the formula!'
Good Vibrations is a gem, but the rest is just mindless music about a whole lot of nothing. Its nothing I'm interested in hearing.
Leave the tapes in the vault for a hundred years. By then it would be dust and they could throw it in the garbage where it belongs.
Shut the fuck up, Mike Love. It's your fault the album never came out when it was supposed to, and you're only praising it now because of the backlash. Seriously, fuck you
"SMiLE" IS Brian and Van Dyke Parks WITH Carl, Dennis, Bruce, Al, and Mike. My gosh, better late than never. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be in 1967. Maybe it was meant to be NOW. God works in mysterious ways.
It's good to see that all of the bandmembers have changed their opinion on Smile. Or maybe they're just being positive in promoting the album. Either way, I'M PUMPED
Mike Love talking about sMiLe? That must be a joke, the guy kept pissing on all of Brian's avant-gardist works until he could make money out of it, and he's acclaiming now everyone acknowledged this was genius?
Still not much in the way of praise for the lyrical genius from Van Dyke during the whole video. Only Brian deems him worthy of a mention. The fans appreciate you, Van Dyke!!!!
Miss you Carl...

He did it all.
crietman29 3 months ago
@crietman29 Beatles had John Paul And George writing and George Martin producing. Brian was the total package.

the stuff about brian being a genius is a jerk off, you could say it about any musician ever. if you listen to the sessions you'll always know when a take is the master, and you'll always know what went wrong 99% of the time. the thing is he had no idea what these songs would sound like when being played by an ensemble but still managed to arrange something incredible. THAT'S where genius comes in.

I remember how blown away I was when I first heard Brian Wilson's 2004 version of "Smile." No words can describe what it's like hearing "Smile" with the original Beach Boys vocals!
tmamone83 3 months ago
Aside from Brian (naturally), the rest of them are the most disingenuous people imaginable. You've got Jardine raving about Heroes & Villains as his favourite, yet he made fun of that song when it came out. Same as Love who, now that he's getting a royalty check from the album's release, suddenly praises the album to the high heavens. The whole thing reeks.
PAVaughn333 3 months ago

MattHatter 4 months ago
How can stupid Mike Love sit there and say that SMiLE had brilliant tracks and brilliant lyrics? He was the MAIN reason that album got killed. Surf Rock was dead in '67, and he couldn't get over it. Old man trying to re-write history.
JakeMiller21 4 months ago
@JakeMiller21 "(Mike Love) was the MAIN reason (Smile) got killed". Are you serious? Yeah, he played a part. And so did the drugs, the pressure, pressure from Capitol, and the fact that he just couldn't piece it together. Brian bears no responsibility for the failure to compete his record? It's all Mike Love's fault? Give me a break. I don't know why it's a requirement to hate Mike Love in order to be a Brian Wilson fan.
timmyc359 4 months ago

HughHoyland1 4 months ago
@HughHoyland1 : Anything that strayed from the "formula" Mike carped about it. He was jealous because he wasn't writing the lyrics on Smile. In My Room wasn't penned by Mikey, either. Brian wanted the lyrics to progress past the beach, hot dogs, caramel corn and cotton candy. Baby's need formula. Brian wanted to get into the meat and potatoes. Mikey's lyrics just couldn't cut it.
pmoyer50 3 months ago
@pmoyer50 Mike wasn't jealous; he really did hate the lyrics. I think his concerns about a change of direction were valid; an established act is taking a risk by deviating from the formula to this degree--it might work; it might not. They didn't have the benefit of hindsight like we do. Having said that, Brian did the right thing by growing and expanding musically--the public's tastes were changing, and Pet Sounds & Smile were his answer to that.
galoon 1 week ago
This was Brian and Van Dyke's masterpiece ahead of its time all the way, Mike Love has no real place to praise it when it's common knowledge his fervent opposition to this musical direction and lyrics was perhaps the biggest factor in its shelving and maybe even Brian's loss of confidence. Who knows how much Smile could have changed music as we know it if only it saw its proper release at the time and the people around Brian were only 10% as visionary as he was?

Great album.
But better than "Pepper" or "Revolver" (or "Rubber Soul", for that matter)?
Please.
50 years from now music scholars will still be writing about the above records.
SMiLE? Doubtful.
TDavis7395 4 months ago
@TDavis7395 No. Not doubtful at all.
TellYerMa 4 months ago
@TDavis7395 Sorry, IMO it trumps Rubber Soul, EASLY. It equals Revolver as far as artistic vision. I honestly cant say it does the same with Sgt Pepper, maybe no album can. But who knows what B Wilson would have come up with in response if he'd been able to stick with it. And I guarantee music scholars will talk of it as well as the RS, R, SP 50 years from now. :]
HughHoyland1 4 months ago
@HughHoyland1 Sgt Pepper is a set of thematically related songs akin to Pet Sounds. It cannot compare to SMiLE, with it's interchangeable modular sections. We are way beyond 'songs' here and into a music that is still ahead of it's time 45 years later. NOTHING the Beatles did can touch it. Their influence was spent 30 years ago;
this radical avant-garde pop is STILL influencing new music today. See Animal Collective or Panda Bear.
anothercountyheard 4 months ago
@anothercountyheard Oh brother. This Smile better than Pepper stuff has got to stop. Both are great albums, both are legendary , ok? The only difference is that one made it to the dance on time and changed music history, the other one was late by 43 years due to unfortunate cimcumstances, but a masterpiece (albeit an unfinished one) nonetheless as well.
sjdrifter72 4 months ago
@sjdrifter72 Sgt Pepper didn't change music history. All of the Beatles songwriting talent together doesn't equal 1/2 of Brian's genius. They always needed George Martin --- Brian was a one -man show. He had the voice, the vision, the musicianship, the songwriting talent, the balls to pull off a record that makes the Beatles most ambitious work seem positively ordinary by comparison. And I'm speaking as someone who was convinced Beatles were supreme ---- until I discovered Brian...

Eyyoh77 2 months ago
@sjdrifter72 Unfinished? All that was needed was editing and assembly -- and now we have it. Proof of something extraordinary, something so radically different in conception from other rock records that 45 years after the fact it is still unmatched. Stringing song fragments together like A Day In The Life or the b-side of Abbey Road is quite different from the modular concept of the SMiLE music. The rock music of the '60s is something special, and sitting on the very top of the heap is Brian.
anothercountyheard2 4 months ago
@anothercountyheard2 Dude....GET OFF IT. Really! How dare you try and troll this comment forum and start arguments. What would Brian say about your comments? Ever thought about THAT? You're out of line man. Brian would NEVER, EVER put down The Beatles or "Sgt. Pepper." You do know that one of the nails in the coffin was when Brian heard "Strawberry Fields Forever" on the car radio and he had to pull the car over because he was so blown away.
MattHatter 3 months ago
@MattHatter I am not trolling at all bragh, these are sincere opinions. I'll go further and say this -- fuck John Lennon. He's the most over-rated person in rock history. He never had a sincere belief or conviction. What you call an argument, I call conversation. How dare you challenge my right to speak? I grew up with the Beatles, have their every recording. Only when matured did I appreciate Brian, whose music leaves the Beatles in the dust. Pepper is now de-throned. SMiLE is the greatest LP.
anothercountyheard2 3 months ago
@anothercountyheard2 O.K., maybe you're not trolling, maybe your just an asshole. And hey, I agree with you about John Lennon....TO A DEGREE. I don't put John on no Ghandi pedestal like others do. I know better that he could be an egocentric prick and he basically broke Paul's heart in those final days of The Beatles. You have every right to speak and put your foot in your mouth as much as you want! But you haven't "matured" at all if you're gonna pit The Beatles against Brian.
MattHatter 3 months ago
@anothercountyheard2 Hey... no need for bad words yeah? I love Smile and Sgt. Pepper. though I am mainly Beatles fan.I adore SMiLE. But well. I am ahead of people like you who think this rival way.. I just enjoy good music.

JuxtaposeMystery 3 months ago
@anothercountyheard While I agree that SMiLE is on another level, I simply cant deny that Sgt Pepper is as well. Pepper takes me on a journey every time I hear it. Its almost a self contained world unto itself.
But on the flip side so is SMiLE, it does the same thing to me, just in a different way. My hats off to both groups for creating such masterpieces! :]
HughHoyland1 3 months ago
@TDavis7395 You're stuck in the past, or you have no concept of what avant garde is. Brian Wilson has more currency than any Beatles music. He's more influential now than ever -- a whole new genre -- the most dynamic and developmental one -- Chillwave -- is linked directly to his influence.
You are in the boat with Mike Love -- you just don't get SMiLE. You've probably never heard of Animal Collective or Panda Bear.
anothercountyheard2 3 months ago
@anothercountyheard2 ...please don't ever mention Animal Collective on this video ever again. I don't care if I agree that Wilson is astounding, they're the worst act in "independent" music today.
Of course, I'm sure you just listen to whatever Pitchfork shoves down your throat.
ZyxthePest 3 months ago
@ZyxthePest omg Of all the asinine comments I have ever seen on Youtube, this is without a doubt the very dumbest ever. I am not a fan of P4K, I never go there. I heard about Animal Collective on NPR from Robert Christgau the critic for the New York Times, and they are the best example of the enduring influence of Brian and the Boys, and the most important artist in music today.
anothercountyheard2 3 months ago
@anothercountyheard2 OOOOOOOOOOOO NPR! HOW FUCKING CLASSY!
Obviously, you're a person of high taste.
Please.
ZyxthePest 3 months ago
@ZyxthePest Big Star, Matthew Sweet, or Linus Of Hollywood = pedestrian everyday working mans pop rock. Not innovators. Sorry. Panda Bear is mentioned in the albums liner notes btw as an example of SMiLE's enduring influence
anothercountyheard2 3 months ago
@anothercountyheard2
ZyxthePest 3 months ago
@ZyxthePest Okay, first of all don't be such a prick. Animal Collective are one of the few amazing artists around and keeping 60's psychedelia alive. "Merriweather Post Pavilion" is a masterpiece, but in an incredibly different way than "SMiLE".
While they are obviously influenced by Brian Wilson, their music has way more in common with Syd Barrett and is completely different from The Beach Boys. Not fair to turn this into a battle. I'll continue being a fan of both.
TheOneartist 2 months ago
@TheOneartist I don't know how you can say that.
ZyxthePest 2 months ago
@ZyxthePest The Beach Boys and The Zombies were more sophisticated pop with elements of psychedelia mixed in. "SMiLE" is a bit more obvious considering the eccentric structure, and it's a very psychedelically-influenced album. Brian Wilson was a huge fan of of psychedelic music and obviously was using lots of cannabis and acid around that time.
TheOneartist 2 months ago
@ZyxthePest The Beatles definitely released some of the most psychedelic songs, though. The obvious, trippy-layered psychedelia that artists like Hendrix and Pink Floyd were putting out. That's more like what "Merriweather Post Pavilion" is like. Very LSD-drenched music. I think the lyrics are one of the strong points, though. Very modest and insightful.
Animal Collective are completely different from the Beach Boys, though, and Radiohead sound nothing like The Beatles.
TheOneartist 2 months ago
@TheOneartist On top of that, Mariweather Post Pavilion is missing key elements of what made Brian's or any other amazing artist from that decade's work amazing. The first being lyrics. Coherent ones at that. All they do is use falsettos and terrible harmonies.
This is the same problem I have when people call Radiohead the new Beatles. There's absolutely no correlation beyond indie popularity.
ZyxthePest 2 months ago
@ZyxthePest Also I'm a guy who mostly listens to 60's and 70's music. I could care less what the indie community thinks. Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes. They're brilliant bands regardless of time.
But no, I don't agree with the sentiment that Animal Collective are the new "Beach Boys". Yeah, their harmonies may be influenced by Brian Wilson, but the music is more "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"-ish. Animal Collective are the new Animal Collective. That's it.
