All I Can say is All Adults at least 40 thru 60 we are the luckest people because They just dont write music like what we grew up on. This just happens to be one of those songs which actually have meaning from the heart Thanks Dennis and Styx and all the other bands from the 50s thru 90s
If this song had been released in the '80s they may have had another #1 hit! Sad that fewer people could appreciate great music like this in later times... This song is so incredibly beautiful!
Been Styx fan for long time but never got into their solo stuff. Finally recently started searching for them. Heard this one tonight for the first time. Love it! I love DDY and will start buying his solo music! Thanks for putting it out there!

hey, how did this do on the charts!!!?? thanks so much for posting because I remember this song coming out in the 90s and hardly getting airplay.....his voice is timeless
You're welcome. Dennis DeYoung has always had a knack for writing the quintessential ballad infused with sentiment and statements which make their point so incredibly poignantly. That, combined with his masterful tonal and inflection control makes for a song that grabs hold of you and makes your emotions sit up and take notice. Put all that together with his soothing yet powerful voice soaring atop the outstanding melodies he is so well known for and you get gems like this.
If you haven't heard the alternative version of the song which he penned for his stage production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame it's equally as moving and powerful. It's sung by the female lead from the play who played Esmerelda. Her delivery is outstanding. I've posted it as well. Just click my name to go to all the vids I've uploaded and you'll find it.
Glad I was able to be there in your time of need. ;>) Seriously though, I've been in that exact situation trying to find something I just know SHOULD be out there somewhere but can't find it. Grrrrrrr!
Coachsteve, Dennis has said that this song was originally written during the Paradise Theatre Album writings. The song never made that album but was never forgotten by Dennis as he brought it out of the old vault and put it on Hunchback before it also made it to Return To Paradise album. Thank goodness it did cause what a fabulous song it is!!
It's a wonderful thing when a song such as this one is able to aptly express one's feelings in a way which he/she might not have been able to. That said, it's possible that it may not have been as special had it been sung by anyone else. Dennis has the incredible ability to inflect such emotion and feeling into anything he sings. One of the true greats. Thanks for the comment.
If you aren't familiar with the alternative version of this song - the version from Hunchback, you must listen to it. It's absolutely beautiful. The singer, Dawn Marie, has done little else which is shocking to me. Her voice has a clarity and a uniqueness that, IMHO ranks with the likes of Streisand, Karen Carpenter, etc. The song is also on my page.
Dennis DeYoung was Styx, I don't care what anyone says. I am looking forward to Dennis DeYoung's new album due April 14. The new album goes back to the Styx I knew and loved. This track was the best of the three new tunes on Return to Paradise (although I liked them equally). However, Styx does STYNK without him. I refuse to see them unless DDY is in the band. Last Styx album I bought on street date was Brave New World and DDY's songs were great but the rest of it was scattershot IMHO!
This song I heard on the radio in 2002, spring, & I thought, wow, 'Dennis' is back in 'Styx' but then I called the radio station, 'Star 99.9' and I was told the song came off the 'Return to Paradise-Live' cd! Oh well! Still, an incredible song! And yes' 'Styx' is infact 'Stynx' with out 'Mr. Dennis DeYoung' They are like a bad odor that won't go away!'STYX-1972-1999' 'STYNX-2000-Present'
The so called NEW 'STYX' I call 'STYNX' & you are right, they can never come up with another song as great as this if there recording contract depended on it! Not with out Mr. 'Dennis DeYoung' that is!
dennis's new cd "one hundred years from now", the US version, is supposed to come out in april of this year. if you don't have the canadian import, i STRONGLY suggest that you buy it! the songs sound a lot like the old styx songs.
You are right! 100% right! I have 'One Hundred Years From Now' & it sounds incredibly good, like the old 'STYX' especially 'Crossing the Rubicon' my personal favorite! I intend to get the U.S. version as well!
to me, "crossing the rubicon" reminds me of "suite madame blue". "save me" and "forgiveness" are my favorite songs, but i love every one of them. i love how he's making "STYNX" look bad!
Do you know what kind of instrument that is in the background in the beginning?

Don't know the exact model of the keyboard Dennis is playing, but the intro is an electric keyboard (synthesizer).

One of my most favorite songs sung by Dennis is Esmerelda, also from Hunchbak. His signature tenor voice is flawless and mesmerizing.
