what most people dont understand about singers is that they must warm up so sing at there best.. And everyone dose there best when they are paying for studio time. This sounds like drake was recorded at a party or somthing and everyone stopped to listen to him... except sumone who snorted something at 1.27 and then later knocked a drink over at 302
He gets the first line wrong: in Dylan's original version, 1st line ends with the word "highway", hence his stumble at the start of the 2nd line when he realises his balls-up..!
The line he forgets in the second verse is sung by Dylan thus: "I can't hear the echo of my footsteps"
Thank you Amherst Guitar. The recordings running too fast would explain perfectly why Nick's voice doesn't sound like the Nick I know and love. Thank you for your expertise, your etiquette and your rational message. I've been proven mistaken with
intelligent, believable facts. My hat is off to you. By the way, how did you get a hold of tapes from before his first album?
this does sound like nick , it might have been recorded long before he recorded "Five leaves Left" , and that could be the reason why his voice sound is a bit different.
@leslieoscar I think you're doubt, maybe because most of Nick Drake songs recorded in studios and here we hear a different environment like a room or something, that's his great voice , sure! (But ok,I am sorry ,each in their opinion:) Best wishes
@leslieoscar You obviously DON'T know Nick Drake's voice. Just WOW....why would you even bother posting something so absolutely ridiculous....best to work on your astute ear. LOL!
@leslieoscar, this is one of many home recordings Nick made prior to recording Five Leaves Left, his first release. Not only was he was a bit younger and his voice and singing style less developed, all of these demos have always been pitched to high (the tape is running too fast, so everything sounds like it is higher in register). But there is no doubt whatsoever these are Nicks personal tapes with his voice and his guitar.

Nick is probably covering folk singer Odetta's version of this song from 1965. Dylan's version didnt come out till 1971. Nick's version is recorded sometime between 1967-69. Elvis also had Odetta's version and covered it in 1966...and a great version that is also ...and a lot of people think so.

@MrDazvid why are you saying that?? of course its nick drake and his guitar!! not another conspiricy theory? dont tell me he was abducted by aliens and a perfect copy was put in his place?? just listen to it man, it rings out as nick.
I must say that Nick's voice is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
He was a rare and delicate artist; and his work in general is of such high quality that it leaves me feeling slightly embarrassed to even call myself a musician.
its a revelation to me these songs (from family tree) the breadth of his influences including, maybe especially, his mum! talking of his mum if you listen carefully here you can hear a slide door opening and a pot of tea being put down by his mum??
Kinda sounds like it distracted him so that he forgot the lyric at about 1:40... It's a beautiful cover and I love that it has these real noises and even so he continued to record.
the sound of that bottle at 3:02 is the most beautiful moment of this entire piece....along with the bluesy guitar ending.

How could you not hear this is Nick? If not, you have a dead ear or you're not a fan.

This song was released on Bob Dylan's Greatest Volume 2 1971.
There's a good a chance that's where he heard it first before his death in 1974.

I agree with Mr. Dazvid: "This ain't Nick Drake's voice." It's possibly Nick's
guitar playing (but that's highly unlikely if it's not Nick singing), but DEFINITELY not his voice. Some people have a very astute ear
for sounds. A voice is like a fingerprint. It can't be imitated perfectly.
This NOT Nick Drake singing.

@leslieoscar before u go on an intellectual rant, be sure your positive because your wrong. This is Drake.
"Some people have a very astute ear" - clearly, you don't belong in this group.

This was an early demo for Dylan in open E tuning. Perhaps Drake heard a bootleg? But it's probably the Odetta version he heard.

To me "Bob Dylan" is shit to this man's talent. The good ones go out quick, the shit stays and stinks.
