  • They are starring a Brit as Superman which is like a knife through Superman's heart. That is so wrong on many levels. Superman is a pure American, not a Birt trying to be one.

  • That's how it should have been done! The dedication to Christopher and Dana Reeve ALWAYS belonged at the beginning of the movie, not in the middle of the end credits (which makes it seem more like an afterthought).

  • dude, brandon routh doesn't get enough credit. he should be superman in the next one.

  • very nice :)

  • Superman Returns was a great movie. I like they kept John Williams theme, the special effects were amazing and the story was great and despite being too young for the role Brandon Routh did a job as Superman almost closely resembling Chirs Reeve. The only issues I had with it were Superman having a son, his suit, the fact they used Lex Luthor for a 4th time instead of using another Superman villian but other then that it was great.

  • I liked SUPERMAN RETURNS, but as good as the movie was, I feel this movie didn't stand the test of time. SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE is still the best of them easily. Great job with the edit.

  • Superman Returns is Perfect .... until the opening credits end. Then the problems start.

  • God I hope they keep up this homage to the Reeve movies (music etc) in the upcoming "Man of Steel"

  • Superman returns was an awesome movie... That said I think the biggest problem it had was not with brandon routh or bryan singer (directly) I think It had to do more with the casting of the supporting players, Out of the main three I liked Jimmy the best, but something was missing, the Chief is good, but almost too much of a charicature, in acting he doesn't strike me as being a serious news man. Kate bosworth simply lacks the witty, spunky personality that makes lois lois...

  • Superman vs. History Channel's "The Universe"! Best 3D effects I ever saw in 2D! And John Williams too!

  • Best moment is at 0:34-0:35 thumbs up if you agree!

  • @Quasarion You gotta admit the double-ringed blown-out planet at 3:51 is pretty awesome too.

  • @pbanta62 True, but those comic-book images are so epic and synonymous with Superman that it's hard not to cheer at them.

But I agree, that planet was a truly spectacular image.

  • @spectre0075 I like 2 kinda think that things go through phases, and r made 2 appeal to the particular time they r in. Look at all the different versions of King Kong for example, from the original black and white 30s one, look at the cross overs with Godzilla and even the cheesy 70s movie with Jeff Bridges. Then look at Peter Jackson's take, which wasnt too bad, and tried 2 go bk 2 the original. Maybe after all this phase we r in right now, they'll take Superman bk 2 its essence one day.

  • @spectre0075 Abhrams wrecked MI3 trying 2 make Ethan Hunt juggle having a normal life with bieng a secret agent, but the mainstream luved that. And Smallville is no better, Superman spends more time in that series struggling to make up his mind as to what woman he luvs, than actually getting out there bieng a superhero and saving people. The trouble is mainstream want this kinda domestic, "relationships" thing in everything these days, they want a sense of realism, but they're superheros lol.

  • @spectre0075 Tell that 2 the majority of mainstream generation out there who (wen it comes to Superman) only appreciate "Smallville." The trouble with this era is, people want total realism and a origin to everything these days. U cudnt get a better origin for Superman than than Donner's first film, it was Epic!! But people want 2 feel nearly every Icon character of either comics or movies in general appeal 2 them. Look at wots happened 2 Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible, all domestic.

  • While it was kind of fun to see a recreation of the first movie's opening, the problem is that it doesn't quite fit into the narrative. The conceit of the first movie is that we start on Earth, travel through space, the credits roll during the journey, and we end up on Krypton where the story picks up there. Here it's just, "We're going to do it cuz Donner did it," without making it link into the film's story in any meaningful way.

  • can't wait for the man of steel 2012!

  • You will travel far, my little Kal-El, but we will never leave you-even in the face of our deaths. You will make my strength your own. You will see my life through your eyes, as your life will be seen through mine. The son becomes the father. And the father, the son.

  • this should have been the real opening. Everybody and his/her grandma knows the origin of superman. But Christopher Reeve was Superman personified. His work as the only ever worthy Superman should have been acknowledged.

  • 3 dislikes = tom welling's fan

  • You really can't beat a John Williams soundtrack to open a movie. From this, to Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones etc, the man is a genius.

  • As a stand alone film it just didn't feel right in the 2000s

but if you sell it as the definitive third film in the Chris Reeve/Dick Donner trilogy it fits all right

Now we can finally move on with the Snyder/Nolan/Cavill Supes :D

  • it would have been AWESOME if superman went back to kick lex luthors ass instead he flew away into the credits like Christiphor Reeve. With all due respect he should of kicked his ass then flew away into the credits

  • Briliant!

  • good call, but the original relied on the romantic thing with the action too..a dedication at the start may have worked to Christopher Reeve and Dana Reeve, if they wanted to be entirely traditional..and before some have got off their seat..it wasn't all bad as yes raikenXion, it did capture the feel of the original films..hopefully the next one will be lead to a sequel at least unlike Superman Returns..Brandon Routh was fine in the role of Kal El, Clark Kent and Superman..and Bryan Singer & co

  • superman returns would have been better if they had made it more a action film than a romantic film

  • @superbro1938 it is wrong even as romantic film.

  • it is true they both made all of us believe we could fly so high we could forget evrything wrong with the world and i always cry evry time i hear jor-els last words to his son

  • the movie wasn't all i thought it would be but i thought that brandon routh was great.. his acting was more of a tribute to reeve then his own acting. it really made me miss him alot. which i guess means he did a great job in my eyes.

  • Nice touch on the dedication to Christopher and Dana Reeve at the beginning!! :)

  • anyone else notice that the titles are going the opposite direction of the original film/s?

  • personally i would dedicate the film to John Williams also (maybe just dedicate the film soundtrack to him)

  • Do suns really collapse in like one second?

  • Nope! Brandon Routh is still Superman/Clark Kent. I read it @MTV Splash. Seems Christopher Nolan thinks he is perfect for the role.

  • Superman Returns is one of those rare over-due sequels that actually worked. It's such an under-rated film, one of my friends practically had to force me to watch it a year after it's release. Now after seeing it, it's one of my favourite films. Epic masterpiece. I'm very saddened to learn they are going to sack Brandon Routh and reboot the whole franchise.

And this fan-tweaked opening is absolutely awesome. Well done!

  • @pidlive

what the fuck?...they are sacking Brandon Routh.....fuck.....fuck.....fuck.......

  • That was EXCELLENT, Marlon Brando's Jor-El monologue never fails to give me chills

  • is this a special edition of superman returns? i bought the 2 disc edition when it came out and i never saw this title sequence, its cool.

to see superman's ship leave krypton and travel to earth.

so is this a special edition or just something a fan made? because its awesome!

  • yeah! i love this intro!!!!!! awesome!!!!!!!! superman 4 ever!

  • This was a great, and I mean great, betterment. This dedication to Chris and Dana Reeve alone, made this awesome. Makes me wish Warner Brothers would use your opening, for a re-release DVD. Another special edition, is in the works. It's suppose to show the missing Krypton footage.

  • NIce job! What we cut to immedietly after this sequence in the Theatrical release is horribly jarring unfortunately. It shouldv'e cut straight to the crash landing on Kent Farm.

  • Beautiful enhancement of an already excellent opening sequence.

I could almost swear I saw that opening dedication before any music started or introductory text came on screen at the theater screening I attended. Curious...

  • very well done indeed !!!

  • dose anyone no the artist who does superman in the short dc advert part

  • adding Kal-Els spaceship was monumental! and i loved the dedication.the opening sequence rocks!

  • Wow! They should show this as the opener for the Griffith Observatory Planaterium show. It would get more people excted about astronomy!

  • i hated that they cut the theme song into half of what it really is...totally messed up the opening and the magic of the theme

  • Thanks for posting that, I've never seen this alternative version of the opening.

But i must say, I like it!! They should have gone with that one over the released version.

  • Long live Superman: Christopher Reeve!!!!! We miss you so.

Also; that was The most amazing and beautiful simulation of a supernova i've ever seen. Props to Mark Stetson and Sony Pictures Imageworks. (ozzie stands and applauds and whistles hysterically) ^_^

  • People dont give Superman Returns enough credit and it is really a loving homage to Christopher Reeves Superman. One of the few film sequels that actually has the same feel as the original films. I Like the bit with his ship just speeding away from Krypton, was nice how you just slightly put that in. Yes way better than the cinematic version.

  • @RaikenXion

He he he - if the people had seen the hidious Nick Cage version, they wuld promptly say: "Ohh we LOVE Returns!" XP

  • @CSILin Nick Cage version? I'll have to check that out

  • Agreed. Not only a homage to Chris Reeve, but maintaining not just the established parameters of Superman, but the very feel of Superman as well. The same feel that was only present in Superman's 1 and 2.

  • @RaikenXion Totally agree with you. And personally, I think Superman Returns was made for the now adult audiences who saw the original Superman movies.

    Its a grown up's movie, not a kid's movie.

  • @VinnyMonster1"Superman Returns was made for the now adult audiences who saw the original Superman movies." Thats so true, thanks man!

  • @RaikenXion

i can disagree more. Superman Returns was set in a completly different universe than the Reeve movies. oh sure there were a few links but not the same feel at all. for one Superman left for 5 years even after promising the President he would never let him down again? Lois pregnant and he didnt know? Lex out of prison? the movie isnt set in the 80s. dark outfit? just to name a few. the only part that was like the Reeve movies was the intro. each has their opinion right :)

  • @henkman00 Yes indeed each to thier own opinion but I have to say you make out that Returns is completely different to the original, you say "the movie isnt set in the 80s." You forget that Only Superman 1+2 were made in the 1970s. Superman 3+4 were made in the 80s, and alot of people dont realize that superman itself is a product of its time. If you look at all the comics the setting and look of them change and reflect the time/decade as time goes by. Even all the way as far back as 1950s.

  • @RaikenXion the acting is very bad, the plot is between pure absurdity and simple idiocy, the characters looks like a lesser parody of the original. Any episode of the JLA or SAS are more "supermanesque" of this movie.

The only positive things are the title.

  • @criceto ur opinion fair enough

  • @RaikenXion Reeves 's Superman surely deserve a lovely homage; we can debate if "returs" is that..

  • @criceto Indeed, which is y I cant help thinking what other way of paying a loving homage to "Reeves" superman, but to do it in (and as close to as possible) the same style he himself played Superman. Obviously now Hollywood can go ahead and do whatever they want with Superman, make him darker, more serious in a similar tone as Batman Begins if they want lol. If they believe that is what the "fans" want. I just like that the first official "Superman" movie in over what 20yrs?? was this movie.

  • @RaikenXion well Superman returns is an alternate superman III. It was a good movie if you watch the frist to films, it keeps in line with Donnor's superman I & II. But this opeaning is jsut wonderful. I wish Christopher Reeve and Dana were still around. :c

  • @KHMSeries20 Yes of-course, it is set after Supermans 1&2 so ignoring Superman3 lol. I really luv this movie, and I like that (as you say) it keeps in line with Donnor's superman films, something that is rare today for movie remakes and sequels of classic films. Its just ashame that the young mainstream audiences of today dont see it that way. I've always thought what Richard Donnor and the late Christopher Reeves achieved was indeed the ensence of what "Superman" is about ever since the comics.

  • @RaikenXion Yep. Plus I think Donnor,Reeve,Williams, everyone did soemthign that is so Pure.that it's liek ghostbusters 1. you really can;t outdue it,but donnors Superman II reach that leavel and Returns sorta reached that leavel. personally I think Tom Welling, and Brandon routh did a great job protraying Clark/Supes. Smallville is in a way a ten year long remake of the donnor films (so many Homage's there to the comics, and donnor, yet still making it their own. R.I.P. Chris & Dana.

  • @RaikenXion i'm with you i know its been a year since you have posed this comment but sod the rest what do they know classic film end of..

  • @stowmaker1945 Yes thanks, and its funny but people still keep replying to my comment, arguing with me about this even now lol.

  • Personally I prefer this idea of the dedication at the beginning rather than at the end. Makes it even more worthwhile than it already was. And it was 100% worthwhile.

  • I combined all of the themes from the original (& best in my opinion) and from superman IV and superman returns in one video, leaving out superman 2 because it's the same as the first one and of course leaving out the third, as there was no theme tune.

I found a huge difference in the arrangements of the piece, the original being the best, the fourth being a lazy attempt, and superman returns being impressive but without the magic or length of the first.

  • John Williams version IS Superman's theme song - I mean, It would feel the same without it. I just hope the rebooted Superman movie will have this theme song, only it would not go by too fast, like this one.

  • I like how the John Williams credit goes fast and is harder to read, kinda like using his music was a shame...

  • Bad Hat Harry Productions did part of this. Bad Hat Harry also produces " House, M.D. ", & they approached Hugh Laurie about playing Perry White. He would've been great. Kal Penn ( Dr. Kuttner ) had a small part as thug in Superman Returns, then he left to work with Obama.

  • Would anyone happen to have the opening without the credits themselves? that would make GREAT footage to add to my video.

  • Am I Right?

BIG SONG for a BIG HERO !!!

    Go Superman.

  • much better than the film version

  • Does anybody know the name of the begining song bfor planet exploded ???

  • Think it's called, 'The Planet Krypton' from the first movie.

  • It is also 'Preface' from Superman II

  • Best super hero music ever! One of the coolest movie openings ever!

  • It's too bad this movie came before the advent of all the new 3d movies. This would have been an awesome intro to view with 3d glasses

  • Actually, Superman Returns was in 3D IMAX. But this scene wasn't... :-(

  • Thats what stars that go Super Nova do....shrink then explode.

  • Yeah, but they are super super bright...not shallow colors...and the sound is not like a thunder....it is an immense universal sound that should have been magnified when you pull a powerful metal bow string...that is the sound they should have put in there.

  • Supernova colors are not super super bright or shallow colors, its both, the colors depend on the gases and the dust or particles located in the space or in the star which explodes. And believe it or not the sound that would be made is no sound at all since there is no medium for the sound to travel though, so the sound may be heard inside the supernova but outside it cannot be heard as there is no particles for the vibrations of sound to be carried through space. Science 101.

  • Yes, but the audience cannot go inside the supernova to hear the sound, can they? So we have to give them an idea of what it may sound like.... no science 101 in movies, and i know that there is no sound in space.

  • The opening scene was awesome. This Superman is great it was just the introduction of his kid that did'nt quite fit.

  • Great beginning!!!!!

  • please, please, lets all forget this movie happened!!!

  • I bet that's what your parents say about you. The movie was pretty good. Now go play with your legos.

  • 1st of all dush, its my opinion. btw yes this movie sucked ass,if it wasnt for the airplane scene oh my god, i shutter to think..

this is a fan movie thats all..

  • lol I'm sorry but what does 'dush' mean? It's too bad you don't understand visual metaphors, allusions and symbology otherwise you might have enjoyed it. Prey tell, why was the first Superman movie great? Can you tell me please? It had just as much action as Returns. Please share with us all why you feel Superman was great but Superman Returns sucked ass. I think perhaps it's because the movie was too smart for you. If you have to think, it's probably not a movie worth seeing, right?

  • The biggest problem with Superman Returns was that the relationship with Lois and Clark/Superman was totally screwed over. That's what you get for having an openly gay guy direct the movie.

  • way tooo much shit going on the background at all times in this beginning, and it is hard to SEE how truly fast john williams name flys by. THIS is a complete distraction

  • why does the star implode then explode?

  • Because Krypton absorbed the suns radiation, that is my guess, or Bryan Singer just wanted it to look really cool lol.

  • Dude that was totally awesme. Just like everyone else, the capsule flying away from krypton and hearing Marlon Brando's(R.I.P) voice almost made my eyes a little misty.

    5 stars.

  • why don't you change the sign to the original one?^_^,love your video. Thanks

  • Nice touch with the capsule leaving Krypton.

Have you ever watched Superman: The Movie on VHS? The version without all the special edition bells and whistles. The Krypton/red sun explosion sound effect is ear-piercing!

  • Unfortunately, this is the best part of the film

  • I love the fact that you included the the ship carrying the baby Kal El to earth. that was something that I thought the original opening was missing. Well Done!

  • Very nicely done! I like your opening better! The problem that I found with Superman Returns was that they tried to ensure, even go out of their way to make both movies soooo different, when I think, they should have made Superman Returns a lot closer to the original one. When I first watched the movie, I said to myself something was missing...Christopher Reeve was it! As far as I'm concerned, there will never be another "Superman" because he died when (RIP) Christopher Reeve passed away!

  • Excellent work.

  • the part with the planet's death reminds me of the movie gabriel

  • muy bueno, asi debio hacerlo el señor synger

  • Greatest.Opening.Ever.

  • i havn't seen the film yet so, how much of that was real

  • By my count, the colour/grading has been corrected, the Chris Reeve/Dana Reeve credit is new, little Kal-El's spaceship has been added (x3), and when Krypton explodes, the image is combined with the explosion from the original Superman movie.

I think someone else has posted the 'as is, in the movie' version of this, already. If you wanted, you could check it out and compare the two :-)

  • i like this opening better

  • very nicely done! i do like the addition of the ship
