I find it so incredible that people dare make comments about professionals peoples interpretation of what they find to be musical. The idiot who said Joan sutherland can't sing......can you please post a video of you doing this aria...I would so love to hear it!! You seem so knowledgeable about everything!! And so btw....musicality is something we have within....you can't write that in a score!!! So if it says ritardando or mezzoforte and you 'feel' like doing something different...do it!!! It
Glorious! And what an insanely difficult piece of music. Pity she didn't give it a whack in one of her early recital albums, but I'm glad this survived. Thanks for posting it.

Why staccato at 1:00? In the score it says legato, and I've never heard it sung like this before. One gets the feeling that's the only way she can ( almost ) reach the top E - by making it very short! From 2:07 to 2:12 she changes the music completely, because she can't sing what's actually written. But why choose to sing the aria, if you haven't got the notes? Transpositions and alterations are so typical for Sutherland. She always wants so sing, what she really can't.
I find it extremely acceptable, given the difficulty of the piece, and the ease and beauty with which she manages the rest of it. This is still my favourite recording.
You know what else, in this current fad in favour of historically informed performance practice, this sort of thing is entirely acceptable, as we're informed that this is how it would've been done in Mozart's time.

Actually I don't! I don't have one single Sutherland-CD in my collection. But when I discovered this recording here on YouTube I was curious to hear, how she'd manage singing this extremely difficult aria. And the result was what I expected: she didn't!
i think in her early career she had no e's cause of the change to coloratura from dramatic, and then later she didnt have them obviously cause she got older and its ahrd to keep that up. still this the most exciting ive heard her. i know notes are important, but ill take some flat high e' just to hear here be exciting this once.
This is a great, great recording!!! Sutherland in her vocal prime... and this great ease in tackling high notes!!! WOW!(Btw, I think that this recording was already posted, but anyway she's just fantastic!)
Those E6s came out of her like she was breathing. The coloratura here is just...unbelievable. La Stupenda indeed!

She does it in "Vorrei spiegarvi o Dio" too when the E's come..

Very true. She was very clever to hide what she could not actually do with. I find it extremely annoying.

Her top Es are very slightly flat, but it doesn't even matter - her vocal agility is incredible. Such a wonderful soprano.

Really great performance!
Joan shows her flexible and accurate coloratura in her early career. It's just 'phenomenal'! Thanx :-)

This was the year that Adam was born...think?
Much pregnant here.
Sounds so fresh and beautiful!
Pitty there isn't more from thsi periode, and later on recorder.
The voice lost of it's flex in the 60-ies.
Still La Stupenda, but this.....WOOOOOOW!!!!!!!
