I believe that gov't should be very limited in what it does, and I'm all for privatization if done right, but prison is one of the things I'm not so sure we should privatize. It's too important a function to give up to private companies who may care more about making an extra buck than necessarily serving society as a whole. No one should be profiting off jail. That goes a little far for me.

And why does rural France need "saving" anyway? If a few rural farmers here and there can't compete, so be it! That's the beauty of the market- creative destruction. It allows people who are using resources less efficiently to better use their knowledge, money and skills elsewhere. It frees up that market for more efficient users. Farming should be treated the same as the regular market unless there's some major food/crop emergency or shortage.

In America we formerly only were allowed to prosecute people that had harmed another person, or property. Now that we allow use them to be used for slavery the rules were changed. (Even though we have a special act to protect our markets from those "evil commies" that do this.)

Prison reform is trying it's hardest to get done here in the UK aswell. The MP who said it stated "Prison is a throwback to the victorian era, we need to move forward to a more compassionate 21st century view of social justice." Quite promising, really.

@VexZeez Prisons in the US are business, privately owned or publicly owned. They are paid by the state to house prisoners and the more the profit, the higher the stock, the more is invested, the more prisons can be built, the more people can be arrested.
