TC was an excellent singer who was very Tom Jones like. His biggest hit was 'Is This The Way To Amarillo' which sold even more the second time around. Other notable hits were 'Avenues And Alleyways' from a Tony Curtis/Roger Moore TV series and 'I Did What I Did For Maria.'
I think personally that TC's version tops Marty's because it is much more familiar being the original version.
Because Marty was raised in Arizona, near the Mexican boarder, and this song has that "Mexican flavor" I would have thought it was his song. I don't know who Tony Christie is (I intend to find out now) but I know he has good taste and I'm glad Marty paid him the compliment of singing his song. Did TC do anymore songs like this?
I love voices.Marty robbins truley had this, not like 2-days music which is nothing but sex and a quick way 2 make money.Other favorites r lou gramm and pearl jam.The one thing that i loved about marty robbins is that he is always smiling. That he never took anything 4 granted and 2 enjoy your life, because it comes and goes by so quickly.
Funny thing to find an American country singer digging into British Pop for a country song! Problem is, we have here another EL PASO ideological clone (one too many!) while Tony Christie's original is much more appealing, in spite of the fact that Christie himself was himself a kind of clone... of Tom Jones!!!
yes he did. i guess this is a song along the same lines except maria was a wife and flo was a girlfriend who turned to another man. maria was murdered. happy new year!
Happy New Year! You are the biggest Marty Robbins fan I've ever met! Be Proud! Btw, my fave Marty song is "They're hanging me tonight" sad but beautiful. What's yours?
saddle tramp is my favorite followed by the chair , pride and the badge and she's just a drifter. of course i love all marty's songs. where are u based? i am in south carolina. Happy New Year. i too love they're hanging me tonight
I'm based in California. I hope you're having a great new year. I have to ask you, have you seen Marty Robbins earlier vids like "I Can't Quit?" His voice was different. How did he know to tap into that strong voice of his? Did he go to a vocal coach?
I think that most singers voices get better as they grow older. Bing Crosby sounds quite different as a young man and Elvis developed into a great vocalist as did Bobby Darin and many others. They just mature like a fine wine. Happy New Year to you Kiwi1897.
Happy New Year to you too. It's very interesting in terms of how a great vocalist uses his instrument. You have the best Marty collection ever. Because of you, I discovered "Small Man" I love that song! Thank you
he was just naturally gifted. i dont know if he had formal training or not. i am in columbia south carolina and my new year will be gret when my daughter comes home from deployment in february. yes i saw i can't quit.
the greatest western singer ever and my all time favorite. thanks for all the postings of marty's music

Although this song belongs to Tony Christie, Marty Robbins does a great job with this, in fact Marty can sing the phonebook and we'd all buy it.

I can't find it anywhere. My Dad had it on one of his albums, which was not a greatest hits album, but I no longer have it and can't find it on line.

Marty's good, but only Tony Christie can sing this song the way it has to be sung.
