There is a concert of Aladar Pege, Hebie Hancock, and the late Tony Williams live at carnegie hall in New York.I believe the wife of the late Charles Mingus was so moved by his playing that she gave him one of his basses. The year was 1980.
Check out Pege Aladars solo on Donna Lee.This guy "owns" the bass.Too bad he is dead. Also, check out a salsa bass player named Joey Hernandez on a track-"si no me ven llorando",theres some sick salsa bassplaying there.
I think you'll find a few recordings in duet with pianist Walter Norris. The music, if still available, is decidedly more avant-garde than what you're hearing here.
OK, now that I've officially had my mind blown by a bassist I've never heard of because of my own ignorance, I need to know how to pronounce his name so I can spread the word. Good God! Did this guy ever play with Django?
Unfortunately Mr Pege is dead. He is a gipsy (romany) musician, his family plays the double bass going back to generations. Also has a degree in classical music. Mingus' wife bequated Charles' instrument to him. The greatest bass player!!!!!
Aladár Pege (8 October 1939 - 23 September 2006), was a jazz musician from Hungary. He was well known for his work and was dubbed "the Paganini of double bass".
The drummer has no idea how to make a fill. I don't like him.

They don't make it like that anymore, and I'm not talking about the music.

If I had one wish, it'd be for a Aladar Pege - Christian McBride bass "duel." There wouldn't be a winner, just amazing music.

Alad - the two vowels are like the 'u' in 'mud"
ár - like 'are'
Pege - peg + the 'e' once more like in 'peg'
Django Reinhardt died in 1953 when Pege was only 13.
