I was also scared to see that painted woman in the intro. Seeing the painted woman along with hearing wolf howling and thunder and lightening crashing made it feel even more scarier seeing the painted woman. (I used to wonder what the painted woman was holding in her left hand where I thought she had her tongue on a lollipop but, now I know that she's holding a rose up to her nose). As soon as Mysterious Theater came, I would quickly change the channel for 10seconds to avoid seeing the intro.
Really. When I was a kid, the opening didn't mean much to me at all. I didn't really take the gravestone or anything like that into accoutn. Whenever it came on, my thought was: "oh, good. This means it's time for Mysterious Theater."
I never saw this one when I was little! I just saw the "Circle Search" and "Missing Toast" ones. I love how they used an actual recording of Big Ben striking the hour instead of some other clock chiming sound.
The way Watson always figures out the case before Sherlock Hemlock does reminds me of how on the old "Inspector Gadget" animated series, Penny and Brain always solve the case before Gadget does, since Gadget isn't very smart, sort of like Sherlock Hemlock!
Oh my...I always remembered that these sketches used to scare me, but I didn't remember why until I saw that opening with the gravestone. Then the fear came rushing back.
The intro to Mysterious Theater scared me too. In the intro, I was mostly scared seeing the painted woman along with wolf howling, and thunder and lightening crashing sounds. The thing that scared me on the painted woman in the intro was that, she is making a scary face with her eyes toward the gravestone, while I used to think she had her tongue on a lollipop but, I now know that she is holding a red rose up to her nose to smell it.
Have you seen the REAL opening to "Mystery!" That "Mysterious Theater" title card is a direct parody of one of the scenes in the "Mystery!" intro (I'm talking about the older intro, used in the 1980s and early 1990s)
I don't understand how a song that is an official part of our culture can be owned by anyone. Then again, in this case, the birthday song isn't exactly sung, just barked. Would that count?
I remember this chiming sound when the clock is seen but, I'm not sure why they cut this chiming sound out. If I were to take a guess why they cut the chiming out is because, since the intro is scary with a painted woman, a wolf howling, and thunder crashing, they probably didn't want Mysterious Theater to sound even more scarier for the little kids to see.
They must've added the music during reruns of this skit. I think that's what millcake16 meant. This is most likely how the skit was originally presented back in 1990.
At first, I was sure Richard Hunt was performing the runner, but now I'm wondering if it's David Rudman. Can anyone help me out?

Notice how in this case Sherlock didn't actually take the credit for himself. He didn't truly give anyone credit. He just named off the solution.

Vincent Twice is a pun on legendary horror actor Vincent Price.

I wonder what the educational value of this particular segment is? I guess it's about telling time or how to use a telephone.

Well, they're obviously not going to be able to put this on DVD. Sesame Workshop has a tough time getting the rights to happy birthday.
mightyfilm 4 years ago 2
Right, but they could put "The Mystery of the Missing Cat" on DVD!
And I bet this reason is why we won't be seeing "Big Bird's Birthday" from 1991 being released on DVD anytime soon.

Once again, wisely captured before they added short dramatic music every time the clock was displayed.
I can't help but see a little Montgomery Burns in Vincent Twice Vincent Twice.

What dramatic music are you talking about? I don't hear any music when they cut to the clock.

A little 5-note chiming sound, what I consider the scariest part of the whole thing. It's cut out here.

The world's greatest detective has never heard of a phone? This is obviously set in the days before cops traced phone calls for clues!
