Having worked with those guys, I can tell you it almost certainly wasn't a coincidence or "just the train number." The writers and graphic designers dropped a LOT of things in the game like that. They loved bad puns, jokes and hidden messages.

I think if the developers had intended it as an easter egg, which by very definition would mean that it's intended to be found, they wouldn't have put it in the most uninteresting place imaginable, in the most uninspired way. I think that the number 2012 on the train is mere coincidence, an element that happens to be a number of significance but not really relevant to this game. If you think about all the stuff that goes into a game, it's easy to think that.
