Can anyone explain the joke about Tom Delonge from Blink being able to make better pickslides then Bill? I mean being a fan of Blink Tom does pickslides all the time and sound pretty gnarly most times... or is the joke that a member of a pop-punk band can do them better?
@topdog2328 Technically speaking maybe but they sound nice when used right... doesn't really answer my question though seeing as Mastodon uses them too.
@oooouie I doubt that seeing as how Blink take more time on their albums than Mastodon does. Not to say one is better than the other but Blink is known for taking their time.
Metallica didn't revolutionize metal. They got lucky. There were plenty of other bay area and East coast thrash bands that could've gotten lucky and made it big like Metallica.
Metallica was great for their time... but Bob Rock was when they phoned it in. "Turn the Page" was their Bon Jovi moment like ... "Dead or Alive" ... how exhausting it is being a rock star. I was half expecting them to cover "Like A Rock" for a Chevy commercial.
I thought maybe Brendan O'Brien would do the same thing to Mastodon, but Skye is a cool record. The mix on the drums is a little weak, that's my only complaint. They could have easily done a harder, faster Blood Mountain.
The thing about Metallica is that nobody was playing like them when they started (Cliff Burton's bass solos?). It's the same with Mastodon- the first time we saw them was about 10 years ago at a DIY show at VFW hall. These guys just game out and blew everyone away. These guys didn't sound like anybody else.
@nightwhatchman omg thats exactly what i keep saying brent is seth rogen brann is chris patton and troy is jason lee ...cant find someone to be bill tho
@SuperGreenbuds They're actually not that big on weed in this band. Except for Brett Hinds, none of the rest of them smoke much I'm told. They'll get down with some hallucinogens though, for sure.
I would have to disagree, because I dislike Metallica. Tbh, I don't see why everything thinks Metallica is so great. I would say Mastodon is better than Metallica, at least in my opinion.
@SaivNosevi the reason why everyone thinks metallica is so great is because they revolutionized heavy metal
i mean without them you wudnt have alot of the bands today. So you can think that mastodon is better because that is your opinion but you gotta respect metallica and the other big bands such as slayer or megadeth for opening those doors for newer bands
@LucasChiasson31 Dude i get where your coming from and everything and dont get me wrong when isay this, i fucking love metallica and slayer and stuff but i think most people will agree when i say Mastodon probably would have been just as breathtaking and astounding even if any of the big four didnt exist!
@LucasChiasson31 I don't have to respect them for shit. If you're gonna pull that card, you have to thank Robert Johnson and Son House for metal too, and that's just plain silly. How far back do you have to keep respecting people? Do we owe a whole lot to the guy first banged a rock a on another rock in time? I think Mastodon is better than Metallica. That's my opinion, and despite your opinion, I don't have to attribute Mastodon's awesomeness to anyone other than Mastodon.
@SaivNosevi Mastodon, nor any of these newer metal bands would be what they are without the Metallica influence. The reason why Mastodon sounds better than Metallica to you is because Metallica regressed over this past decade, while Mastodon has taken alot of what Metallica established in the 80s and progressed it further. But make no mistake, Metallica forged this generation of metal 25-30 years ago. Without them, this may never have existed. bPay homage where it is due....
@PeI2PeTuaLMoTioN As you can see, this was a respone to someone who obviously did not know this. You don't even fully understand what I'm talking about. I remember when Metallica was still rising from the underground. Master of Puppets, AJFA, Ride the Lightning. I remember all of those albums as a kid. My brother constantly played 'em. The Black album was when they finally broke through to the mainstream. That was around the time you were born. Mastadon wouldn't be Mastadon without Metallica...
@SaivNosevi Mastodon is pure shit in my opinion.. Metallica actually has meaning things being said with amazing music backing it with the same vibe. Metallica started your hurtin type of music which is filling today
@Klyons92 You think Mastodon doesn't have meaning? Wow, that's a very uneducated statement. Crack the Skye was a CONCEPT album, meaning, the whole album was based on something, MEANS something. Hell, all of their albums have deep themes that are rooted into the albums. If you read the lyrics or look up on the subject you are talking about, you would know that. The whole Leviathan album was based on the book Moby Dick. Blood Mountain is about the wolfman's journey up Blood Mountain, and all the
@Klyons92 challenges that he over comes when he gets to the top of the mountain. It's deep meaning is of having the strength to overcome obstacles in your way, what ever the situation it is that you are in.
@Klyons92 - " . . . started your hurtin type of music . . . " is a totally false statement. Mastodon being pure shit is your opinion, in which I disagree with you, since their most recent album "Crack the Skye" is one of the best in the past decade. Metallica's first five albums are undeniably amazing, and the albums after that being okay. As for emotion put into Mastodon's album . . . . uh, "Skye" was the name of Brann's sister who died at a very young age. There is some meaning.
@BrutalGrindCoreMetal - Cool, I respect your opinion for not liking them. But you gotta acknowledge that without Metallica, Mastodon most likely wouldn't exist in the fashion that they do today. Black Sabbath set the foundation, and Metallica (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer as well) really popularized that style of music. Also, Master of Puppets is like . . . the greatest metal album of all time, next to Reign in Blood - and the most influential.
Nah. Reign in blood is much better than MoP I think. And no I disagree. I hate when people say that metal would not exist without Black sabbath and Metallica and stuff. Cos thats riduclous.
@BrutalGrindCoreMetal - Reign in Blood is really fast. But MoP is fast, but also has the genius of Cliff Burton, which is why that album is so influential. Also, metal wouldn't be in its present form without Sabbath, such as Pop wouldn't be in its current form without MJ. You are influenced by everything you hear. In an interview with Brett and Brann, they list the top 5 riffs of all time - one of them being MoP. In an interview with Brent, he says that Crack the Skye is their Black Album (orLZ4
@89alltime Mastadon has already topped Metallica? Are you fuckin' kidding? Mastadon is an incredible band, but in no way, shape, or form have they even come close to the groundbreaking work that Metallica did...much less "topped" 'em. I haven't been a Metallica fan since the whole Napster thing, but it doesn't change the fact that Mastadon will probably never even touch Metallica's status in the metal world.
@WarmothGuitarist Metallica isn't metal. They're hard rock, or thrash. And sure, they have been around for a long time, but I don't think they ever became the band that Mastodon has. @LanceSaunders I agree Metallica isn't metal...anymore. Nor will Mastadon be when they truly hit the mainstream. Just look at Slipknot and Mudvayne. That's what happens when bands make it on the radio and TRL lovin' kids get a hold of it. I'm not hating... I just don't think Mastadon will ever achieve the status that Metallica once held. They were king...
@LanceSaunders Now, with all of the aforemention said... I do hope an incredibly talented and heavy band, such as Mastadon, can rise to the top, yet without changing their style or image to fit the mainstream. We need some heavy music in the world...in order to flush out bands like Theory of a Deadman and Shinedown. We need another rock revolution like we had in the early 90's.
