@13irishsailors Max Baer wasn't really portrayed in the movie as evil. It's not like he killed those 2 boxers intentionally. He was also a bit cocky when he underestimated Braddock, which is common in competition.
This helps put the film in perspective. I thought Baer must be a bad guy to be portrayed that way in the film, but he just looks like a boxer, even hugging Braddock at the end. I'm glad I took a few moments to skip through this. Thanks for posting :-D
I had no idea Baer had Jewish ancestry and displayed the star of David on his trunks. Too bad the movie didn't show this, but I guess Hollywood was uncomfortable using such a prominent display of the Jewish symbol when they made him the bad guy in the film. Adter reading up on him, turns out he was raised Catholic and first wore the Star on the trunks in 1933 when fighting and beating the German champion in the Nazi era. The film really demonized him, though he did cheap shot one man who died.
