  • 1;59 b. Davis?

  • Best death scene ever!!! Love this!

  • Corny and silly now, but we'll never see the likes of Lucy and Crawford ever again.

  • I think Joan was a good sport for the cleaning & alcohol jokes. =:)

  • I luved BERSERK! very under rated finally on warner archieve dvd. :)

  • "Scareface"! Lol.

  • Love it!!!! Keep the videos coming!!!!

  • doesnt joans voice sound different here? notice how lucy made sure joan wear ugly outfits in this. while hers were more flattering. even joans house coat or whatever

  • oh i so loved this show.. family affair, my three sons, carol burnette.. great tv

  • In the late 80's a friend of mine and I walked to the backdoor gates of Lucy's Black and White house in Roxbury Drive. A housekeeper met us at the gate. The housekeeper shouted for Lucy to wave hello to us from her upstairs window and Lucy waved and said Hello.

  • @LyleLincoln OMG...are you lucky!! That's a memory that you'll never forget and I wish I had that memory(:

  • Wonderful episode! it made my Sunday.

  • That was an awful episode. the worst!

  • Mr. Mooney was a total babe in that suit ! Who knew !

Hey, good thing Joan kept turning down movie offers until Trog came along.

  • Mr. Mooney was a total babe in that suit ! Who knew !

  • Joan initially was thrilled to be on Lucy's show but I heard Lucy was a little hard on Joan. Crawford mentioned she was disappointed in Lucy and was glad the show was over and wouldn't do another again.

  • This is NOT Gary Morton playing "Lew" Joan's agent. It was Lew Parker who also played Marlo Thomas's father on "That girl."

  • I went to get Lucy's autograph in the mid 1980s. I wasn't careful and she spotted me taking a nip from my flask. She didn't like that at all and had security goons remove me from the line.

  • OK Lucy, seemed to have issues with actors and had conflicts, but I bet there was one 'legend' she didn't fight with or 'abuse'...Jack Benny. I can't see Lucy getting in his face and threatening him...and that episode had a couple real clunker scenes. I was actually embarrassed for HIM having to do that show. Frankly, as I think about it, I'm embarrassed for ALL the "Very Special Guest Stars" that appeared on this show.

  • @dsflood I read somewhere that Lucy treated him (Jack Benny) like crap too.

  • There WAS turmoil during the filming of this episode, and some of it was Joan's fault. But Lucy was also a tough taskmaster AND perfectionist: if you weren't ready to act your part when the camera was rolling, she could tear you into little pieces- or banish you from her soundstage for good (as when she and another Joan- Blondell- had a loud disagreement during a 1965 filming; she WOULD have had a recurring role as Lucy's neighbor, but not after that incident).

  • There's a quote from Lucille Ball that says that during the reading for this episode Joan was drinking from a flask. In Hollywood in those days drinking was not frowned upon like it is today. One of my favorite quotes is when Kathleen Turner said,"People in show business hire drunks all the time, but not people who are sick."

  • "Hello, Mr. Scare-Face!"

    lmao adorable!

  • 1:16... look at the drummer, she looks like liza minnelli!

  • Hahaha the fat one with a mustache. (:

  • Bravo, what a great show!

  • Love that red head!

  • I love that cartoon of Lucy at the end, it looks just like her! I think that is amazing how people can draw cartoons of people.

  • I wish people would just watch these episodes and appreciate them rather than posting negative and hateful comments, I don't see the need for it.

  • @ch88ch35 I agree...most of these older tv shows were great !

  • @ch88ch35 The negative and hateful comments come from pathetic trolls, who have no chance in real life to find an audience for their verbal garbage ! That's all about! I love Joan CRAWFORD, but I would never insult Lucy for this reason ...

  • @SpaceCowboy641 Thanks for agreeing with me, I too LOVE Joan Crawford. YT is so hateful and ugly at times and I will never understand these horrible people. I am here to appreciate old movies and tv shows and not to make stupid ass comments. As you rightly pointed our they are trolls! So sad! Helen x

  • @ch88ch35 YT is not responsible for this abominations of trolls. We should better use the term "interfering transmitter" or "jammer" - that's just what they are. YT is (for the public) anonymous and so they can post their verbal terrorism without danger of beaten out their teeth ...We have to live with these jammers and should them give the correct answer !

  • @SpaceCowboy641 Completely agree with you! I just think these people are sad..sad individuals who obviously have no life at all!

  • @ch88ch35 i agree! however, & in truth, the "behind the scenes" drama between miss ball & miss crawford was far more interesting than the actual episode.

the original run of the "i love lucy" program was innovative & very funny. but, by the time she did the "lucy" shows, times had changed, & to be honest the skits were below average. people tuned in to see lucy's slapstick which, by then, was predictable & out of touch with reality. hence the fascination with the off camera antics!

  • i love lucille ball, but it seems like later on she was really hard to work with, she didnt like joan blondell AND joan crawford i love joan crawford so i dont care how much of a drunk mess she could have been on the set. lol

  • Just love Gale Gordon's classic reaction [3:17]. These former radio actors sure knew timing and how to use the voice.

  • 1965? The multicolored credits like that started in the fall of '65; Vivian had left the show at the end of the previous season so she was billed as Guest Star. Mary Jane Croft would be Vivian's replacement. Lew Parker played the agent.

  • Didn't something happen during the filming, like...Crawford was late, rude, and drunk or something like that?

  • @allermenchenaufder

Thats bull. Not true at all!

  • @allermenchenaufder Shut the fuck up, retard.

  • @allermenchenaufder

    Absolute lie!

  • @allermenchenaufder wow is dat for real i love her now dats krazi i feel bad knowing dat she died miserable den having a negative attitude like dat

  • @allermenchenaufder THATS SO ABSURD I CAN'T EVEN COMMENT ON IT

  • im gonna sound controvercial but i thought lucy was over rated slapstick

  • Joan Crawford's agent is Lucy's husband Gary Moore.

  • @TIPTON340 actually his name was Gary Morton and that's not him in the episode

  • lol i love how they bill joan crawford as a "special guest star" and vivian as just a "guest star"

  • When I watch this stuff now, all these years later, it looks like life on a different planet.

  • what season is this on?

  • i know its fake but i'm surprised that they shot somebody on the show.

  • joan use to be a dancer in the 1920s before she was signed on to MGM, i think was the name, so those dances probably brought back memories.

  • @jojobug45 Joan was THE flapper/dancer of film - see "Our Dancing Daughters"

  • Yes that's was adorable.

  • joan crawford the but case has a horse face

  • Joan that camera still loves that face even after all those years have pasted. What a fine atress of stage and screen.

  • Of course, by this time, Lucy was riding higher in her career than Joan, which probably did not go over very well with Joan, who hated playing second fiddle to anyone: just ask Bette Davis, the REAL Queen of Hollywood!

  • @ligreekguy

I get a kick out of the end of the show when it is revealed that Crawford is not broke as was thought by Lucy and Vivian, and that she was actually turning DOWN movie roles: so why did she agree to star in TROG just a few years later!

  • @ligreekguy

bette has never been called the queen of hollywood

joan always has and she was!

i love bette too but im more of a joan fan

  • @KURISUCHRIS99

I often wonder who assigns these arbitrary titles. Was Helen Hayes deservedly the Queen of Broadway, was Michael Jackson deservedly the Queen (oops, King!) of pop? I respect your opinion, friend, but Joan won one Oscar after losing how many times in a row, while Bette won two, and was nominated many more times than she.

  • @ligreekguy

but joan deserved nominations for many of her films and it wasnt that her performance wasnt worthy it was the studio

if joan had been at warners in the 30's and early 40's she would have had just as much nominations as bette

  • @KURISUCHRIS99

It is true that she was treated quite shabbily by MGM, and she certainly got her revenge against Mayer by winning the Oscar in 1945. Her daughter wrote that there was an understanding among members of the Academy that different studios would "take turns" winning the Best Actor, Actress and Picture awards each year, thus suggesting an orchestrated process. Let me ask you this: do you believe the child abuse accounts of Christina?

  • @ligreekguy

yes,i think warners definatley had more TOP pictures in those days, dont get me wrong MGM was good too but they just didnt want to promote joan, i dont doubt that joan was a little bossy and strict but i dont think the 'Abuse' was as severe as it was described in thhe book and the movie

    the movie really was exaggarated.

  • Aww, it was so sweet and funny! Thank you for this!

  • @Etheline It, dear, is in the pocket of that gown.

  • at 4:07 where the hell is her arm?

  • My Grandmother.

  • Several accounts did indeed state that Joan was often drunk during rehearsals and that Lucy had had her fill of it. She was heard around the set as saying that she wanted to fire Joan, bellowing "Get me Gloria Swanson." Gloria Swanson had already done an episode of "The Beverly Hillbillies" with a similar plotline.

Lucy, like Crawford, also hated Bette Davis; Lucy and Bette went to drama school together and Bette was reportedly cruel to young Lucille Ball. So, Lucy hated Bette all her life.

  • @Graydon902 I saw an old Dinah Shore episode where Lucy had nothing but good things to say about Bette. I wish I had the link.

  • haha I <3 this!

  • Hello mistah scareface lol

  • That was really cool. thanks for posting. I didn't no that Lucy was always mean to the gest stars.

  • She wasn't mean to all her guest stars, but was extremely impatient with those who were not at the top of their game when doing her show. And Joan was drinking on the set.

  • Disregard my question. I found out that this episode's original air date was February 26, 1968.

    -Matt

  • Could anyone tell me when in the 60s this episode was from?? Could this episode have been from 1966-1968?

    -Matt

  • can i have another beer before 11:30?

  • joan was Broke , those Days , that she has to make appariences in little shows, is true MGM Grand Fired Her she had no Movie Contracts.

  • This was the #2 rated show that season, so not a "little show."

  • I actually like this episode, although the "play" they put on is a little weird and Joan acts a little strangely as the ingenue. But then how could an actress in her 60's playing an ingenue NOT seem a little bizarre? I don't think this episode is nearly the trainwreck they make it out to be in books. It's cute and amusing--but then maybe the trainwreck was all behind the scenes!

  • hhhmm, Joan seemed more nervous than drunk! Tho', in the last scene she was quite smooth. If you believe the stories, Lucy terrorized her...I think the script was more scary. And, it seems like Joan was imitating Bette....the voice is uncanny in the first part.

  • At 00:10 the guy in the red sweater looked like he was about to get out of the way because he feared the door would have lept out You noticed he as about to leave when he quickly realize that it didn't aim right at him.

  • Lucy looked like she enjoyed shooting Joan too much!

I love Lucy but have heard she was a bit of a powerfreak to work with!

  • That's an understatement.

  • Lol yes saw her behind the scenes on Here's Lucy pulling Richard Burton about, surprised he didn't lose his temper.

  • @dramaticguy I agree that she was a hellion to work with - but that was only out of her own perfectionism, and a need to present herself and her performance in the best possible light. This show WAS an accolade to Miss Crawford, who was at that time fading from the public-eye. Lucy oversaw every bit of this script, and demanded that Miss Crawford be presented in the best possible way - script, appearance, character - "old-school" professionalism!!

  • @dramaticguy Between getting shot by Lucy and kicked in the head by Bette Davis in Whatever happened to baby Jane, I think poor Joan got whalloped enough hahah.

  • this is a play that she is playing within the show!!!! she was not nervous people that is how she had to act-- omg people are so slow

  • I know she has her hands in her pocket, but at 4:09 Joan Crawford looks like she has no arms

  • A few things, Miss Crawford was not broke and had to do this. When she agreed she was remembering the old Lucy/Desi shows that were fun. The Lucy Show was a complete vanity excercise for someone. Look at the costuming and shoes for the actors. Joan didn't fear a live audience, she feared bad material. And this script was one of the worst she ever played...And the fact that most everybody on that set imbibed is well known. But Miss Ball treated JC very badly indeed.

  • @paulbranc Okay so what all did she "do" to Joan???I love Lucille she is brilliant not just because of her comedy and I also like Joan.. I'm just curious as to what EXACTLY happened. All of these people saying she was "mean, cruel, etc." don't actually back it up with what she said and did and website links to as she "said" it. Lucy was a perfectionist.

  • Crawford is so uncomfortable it is hard to watch. Her appearance on this show didnt do her clean-obsessed alcoholic reputation any favors either.

  • c'mon...she's obviously had a few (it's well known she was terrified of live audiences, and Lucy was probably working her nerves), but in the final scene she seems much more confident, and her delivery is better.

"oh, please don't tell me I won another Good Samaritan award..." LOL

  • @mnmcv1 The Lucy Show was not a live tv show

  • @paulb6364 - i know it wasn't a live tv show. it was filmed before a live studio audience. My comment referred to that live studio audience.

  • In "Desilu" a biography of Desilu Studios and Lucy and Desi, the authors write Joan was late to rehersals and Lucy observed her drinking vodka. It also said Lucy was very hard on Joan, very criitcal to the point of being mean, and that Crawford was quite intimidated by Lucy. Crawford had been Queen of the movies, maybe Lucy was trying to prove she was Queen of television. I think both of these women ofen worked from places of deep insecurity.

  • im a biz like that i think thats the norm..things back then were so differnt..tv back then was very very tight..nothing at all like now...ive read several of the joan books and her drink of choice was 100 proof vodca she wouldnt drink anything less..either way her career was around 50 years and it sadens me that people refer to her based on mommie dearest...when you hold her up against stars today there is no contest..ppl worship jennifer aniston and yet she plays the same role in all her films.

  • Funny!!! and worth warching,Thanks! HeyDeyFan

  • I love Lew Parker :)

  • All the people that said Joan was drunk...

Did you ever think that maybe she was nervous because this was live?

    I would be.

  • I think the drum player really is Liza Minnelli. I know she stayed with Lucy for several years.

  • I agree, it looks just like her!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ok after closely watching all three parts, you don't have to be doctor to figure out she was obviously drunk. I see nothing wrong with drinking but the rule is that you have your drinks AFTER work, not during. Even in the 60's, before the realization of alcoholism, it was understood that you should be sober when you are working. Having said that, for some reason I just feel sorry for her, especially after hearing how Lucy was mean to her. I'm sure she had her reasons, but its still sad.

  • That was fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.

  • Lol! "The producer said he was interested in the fat one." "Oh, that's me! That's me!" Hahahaha! =D

  • Lucy "I'd like to talk to youuuu!"

    Joan "Yes, Ma'am?"

Lucy shoots her over and over

    Joan just stands there nonchalant

    hahahaha

    "I think you missed!"

"Oh, yea! Wait till she takes her next drink of milk!"

Super highlarious... hadn't laughed that hard in a while... thanks Lucy!

  • Joan was always such a great dancer, it was fun to see her do a bit of the Charleston here. I hope I have legs as nice as hers when I'm in my 50s.

  • Joan was not drunk. I wish people would stop saying dreadful things about her. She was the most wonderful actress ever!

  • she likely was. joan was a notorious drinker even when she was younger, but as grew older it became too difficult for her to cover it and work through it.

  • OMG! It's 2009 and it's still very entertaining. I love it!!!

  • Back in those days, TV was for entertainment. No reality shows back then. At least writers (Script writers etc....) could find some steady work back then!

  • I think the only movie Joan really made after this was Trog.

  • I have always wanted to see this thank you so much for posting!

  • I watched all the episodes around 1975, but I couldn't remember the tune. I wonder why...

  • Crawford was not a new widow. This show was taped in 1968 and Crawford had been widowed in 1958.

  • To be precise, she was widowed in 1959 ... Al Steele died on April 4, 1959

  • What many of you may not realize is that this was a major turning point for Crawford. She was recently widowed; Pepsi, who she contributed to being a success "released" her from their Board of Directors, and now she was doing TV in front of a "live" crowd. This was major pressure for a star of her stature. Ball had a hit show, and was a TV pro. Joan doesn't embarrass herself, and actually looks pretty good, is charming and showcasing that old-time "star" quality.

  • I am sure the so-called "feud" between Lucille Ball and Joan Crawford while taping this guest appearance has been wildly exagerrated through the years. Actually, I think this is one of the stronger shows from that year - very cute, and if Joan was "drinking" it certainly doesn't really show in her overall performance.

  • I agree with you. Everyone who has ever spoken about working with Joan Crawford lauds her for her professionalism.

  • JOAN IN COLOR!!!!! WOOOOOO HOOOOOO

  • why would joan crawford leave her doors wide open ??? lol

  • Delightfully horrifying!

  • is that liza minelli on the drums?

  • The reason she drank so much was because she was always scarde to act live in front of people

    give her a break!

  • I really don't think she was drunk. Maybe lil buzzed but more than capable to deliver her lines. I don't understand why everyone has their panties in a twist over this.

  • i luv this show its awesome

  • Joan knows her lines, she isn't falling down, and she sure knew how to dance. So she did her part, now what Lucy did I don't know, but Lucy was always wonderful and so was Joan.

  • Lucy and Joan were both alpha females and since Joan was on Lucy's terf, it was on!

  • Very well said! Thank you very much for saying that

  • Such a cute episode! Joan was so great!

  • I'd have gotten drunk after reading that script. Couldn't they have done better by Joan? She sounds like she's channeling Baby Jane Hudson in that charity performance. Still, let's face it, even drunk she's compelling.

  • Thats your opinion, if the Lucy Show was so bad how come she won 2 emmys in 1967 and 1968,and 1968 her show was ranked #2 she was always in the top 10 for the Lucy Show and as for Mame she and Bea Arthur were nominated in 1975 for Golden Globes, though they didnt win they where at least nominated, Mame was panned when it was originally premiered in 74' but it has been rediscovered by an younger audience, people are appreciating Mame for what it is,Lucy and Angela each gave unique perfomances

  • to tell you the truth lucy1, the 1st broadway musical i really called my own was "mame" with angela lansbury.

when i first heard lucy was doing it i was indeed disappointed. the movie was not my favorite by any stretch. however i will tell you it was one of those that i remembered most.

looking back at it today, even though many more actresses could have done better, that particular movie is immortal and will live on because of lucy, and for the good. somewhat like "singing in the rain".

  • O come on, joan crawford was drunk on Lucy's set for most of the filming of this episode which angred Lucille Ball. I would be upset if my geust star was drunk and making mistakes, wouldn't u be upset lukemack? I credit Lucille ball for always being professional, i loved joan crawford but at the end of her carrer she started drinking more excessively it was simply embarrising to watch her perform. Lucille Ball gave her best in Mame. Lucille Ball is loved all around the world THATS A TRUE STAR !

  • you know what's most interesting lucy1?

we hear how lucy didn't make it in the movies, how she was only the queen of "b" movies.

but the fact is, if you ask young children today who lana turner is they would look at you with a blank face. if you asked them who lucy, not lucille ball, just lucy is, they will go on and on about her and the amazing "i love lucy" tv "show".

the power of tv is far more impressive than movies ever were. movies create temporary stars. tv produces lasting icons!

  • Lucy was not jealous of any of her friends. Joan came to work drunk and Lucy didnt appreciate it being the perfectionist that she was.
